Horsemen & Gamblers - Do you own a Pony? (1 Viewer)

Chemical X

Footballguy
so, I've posted only a bit in the 3crown thread, but may have mentioned a dream of mine always was owning a horse.  Got into harness and the ponies back during my teen summers at Monticello, which was cemented after watching the great Niatross.  As an FYI, Niatross won 37 out of 39 races......his 2 losses were memorable.  He raced at Saratoga on the main track and got spooked and jumped the rail, damn near killed clint galbraith.  he lost a meadowlands pace elimination after breaking, but found his stride and somehow finished 4th, qualifying for the final he would win.

well, I would frequent yonkers and Roosevelt and the meadowlands back in the day, but never thought I could get in the game.  then I researched syndications a bit more and came across VIP Stable.

they offer reasonably priced partnerships, you share in the cost and purses, but best of all, you can go into the winners circle if you are there in person.

my first crop of horses, all 2 year olds, had mixed results and I got out of those partnerships via a VIP sponsored ebay type auction sale.  While my guys won a couple of races and were check earners, I never got in the circle since I am in NC.  I did see 1 horse, Troon, run at the Meadowlands in the NJSS finals.  Effin HOFer John Campbell was on him and broke him at the 1/2 pole.  I cursed at Campbell like a drunken sailor.

I decided to get back in this year and bought a share of a new 2 year old, NY bred, named Phat Blue Chip (now gelded).  he has been in 2:14 in the training bike and is now moving into the race bike.  I expect him to hit the track in june to qualify and he is staked to all the main NY bred 2 yr old races.

some of you guys wanted me to post updates on him, so i'll try to come here often.

but, since FBG seems like a tight community and I know there is a lotto type pool with money floating around, just thought I'd let you all know I wouldn't be adverse to getting in with some guys on a horse(s) and I could be the point man since I already have executed agreements with VIP.  horse prices depend on breeding and sales price and %, with monthly training/vet bill being around $3,000- (for 100%).  so a 10% share would have a roughly $300- bill.  most of you know how purses work (1-5 get money).  I will be honest, I don't expect to win.  I expect to lose a little (but I get a k1 for the partnership or something like that).  But........you never know with a 2 year old if you found the next Niatross or Wiggle it Jiggle It or Rock n Roll Hanover.

So, i'll answer questions if anyone has any or is thinking about doing something stupid with spare money.

will be in touch about this further over the weekend    man, what great times at Roosevelt back when i was a wee one - as glorious a bullring as ever stood ... my father and uncles had interest in quite a few trotters back then (circa 60s/70s) and had Carmine Abbatiello in their pocket, so to speak (he drove a ton of winners for them).

me? i was usually too busy with the coloring books they gave out  :D

grew up to love the Harness game at the Meadowlands, and usually played heavy on the Catman (Manzi) - couldn't stand Campbell (porn star lookin') until i got to meet him personally - pretty cool chap.

walter case, jr.!!!

I might be interested.  I first got into horse racing by going down the road to Yonkers and watching the trotters.

This is something I'm going to get into as well.  Not a matter of if , only when.  We have Tioga Downs near me upstate and I'm 1-2 hrs away from Vernon Saratoga Monticello tracks.  If this venture would have some action across these tracks at times I would be interested in hearing more

For most it's a losing proposition and the removal of tax writeoffs has really hurt. Even if your horse wins several, gets claimed etc the trainer and vet bills just keep rolling.
this is not wrong; however, VIP has begun offering no bills claiming partnerships.  The payout is less of the purse, but you get no bills, just the initial investment.

In college my buddies family had horses that ran at the meadows.  A couple time  a year he had a good read on a when a his horses were running really good.  Easy money.

do tell.......you witnessed history!
What can I say, my Dad took me to see him and when he jumped the rail it was after he was already losing the race. He would have lost jump or not. But yeah, totally surprising as you don't see that often and certainly not by a legendary horse.  He looked to be about twice the size of the other horses.

trainer gonna send him out to qualify again at Pocono Downs, tomorrow at 10a, Qualifier 1.  sadly he got post 8, david miller in the bike again it seems, he had good things to say the first time out at Gaitway.

8 post is almost always a tough draw as you know at a 5/8 mile track. Best of luck.

just a qualifier, so no worries, but I know they don't want to stress or hard drive the horse, so I assume he is gonna run around the back of the field and follow the leader.  they are not gonna use him for speed and I can't imagine the outside flow will be much in a qualifier.  it seems his first start may be a stakes race, otherwise I figure fanning would put him in a NW.

I wonder if PcD live streams baby races.......

It wasn't PcD, he went at Harrah's Phl. and won his Q by gunning out of the gate.  Looks like the 1 pulled over him and he sat the pocket till the stretch.  They put Tim Tetrick in the bike.

29.3 last Q is slow, but he did what he needed to do to win.  Not sure if he gets a tune up race next or he hits the stakes eligible races....either Buffalo or Yonkers.

I didn't realize some of these guys drive qualifiers. Interesting

so, his first start will be in the sheppard eliminations Saturday the 8th, race 5 about 8.30p at yonkers.  drew the 1 hole thankfully and has Bartlett in the bike.  couple of decent looking animals in his elim it seems.  he may be short this first race, but I am hopeful he qualifies for the final which is a $185k race.

Keep the updates coming. I'll probably forget but I'd I don't I'll be watching.

Good luck!

he showed good gate speed in his last qualifier win, so if he holds the top or pocket at the 1/2 mile track he should be in good shape.
Cool

I used to play quite a bit, rarely anymore.  I do watch TVG from time to time but they never show Yonkers... ( The only harness I ever see there is BigM)  don't anything about your driver..never heard of him. He pretty good? Been around awhile?

thru 6/9/2017 is the number 1 driver at yonkers in terms of money, starts and wins.

so, there were 3 elimination races; top 2 finishers in each and the 2 fastest 3rd place finishers (8 total) qualify for the final.  Phat finished 3rd in 1:55.3, which was the 3rd fastest time of any horse than ran.  in fact, his race was 3-4 seconds faster than the other elims, so he qualified easily for next weekend's final.  The purse is over $100k.

He left the gate good, but the 3 went over him, then the 2 went to the top before the 1Q pole and he immediately followed the 2 to the top and was 3 wide a bit.  He led at the 1Q, but was hard used in 27.4 for his first real race.  Led at 2Q and 3Q, but the fractions got him and he leveled out a bit...............it seems the driver knew the speed of the first race and that Phat qualified if he held his 3rd place, he didn't push him too much at the end.

Not a bad debut....1:55.3 on a 1/2 mile track.  Hope this race tightened him and he gets a good drive next week.

draw is out for the final, Phat gets the 4 hole and his race winner draws the 7.  ML 8-1 and he loses Stratton for Brent Holland, still a top 10 driver.  gotta hope the 7 tries for the front and there is a bit of a duel with the 1 & the 2.  the 3 doesn't seem strong.  race 6 at yonkers and the purse is $110,500-.  he won 3k his last start, just about his monthly bill.
