Sir Roger Moore, one of the most popular actors to play James Bond, died Tuesday in Switzerland.

Moore had battled cancer briefly ... according to his children who released a statement saying they were all by this side in his final days.

Moore took over the Bond character in 1973's "Live and Let Die.' His final one was "A View to a Kill" in 1985. All told, he played the character 7 times ... more than any other actor.

First bond, and while Daniel Craig is moving quickly up the rankings,  Roger Moore is my favorite bond.   The Spy Who Loved Me is still my favorite Bond film.

I knew he was getting old, but was still doing Q&A's on facebook for charity stuff somewhat recently.

RIP Sir Roger Moore

89?  I would have guessed he was much younger.  One of the best.
Guy looked phenomenal for his age.   When he took over for Connery he was older than him.. yet looked considerably younger.

He was a good Bond and before that Saint. As I understand it, he was a real class act to those that worked with him.

inherently British ... had that suave and debonair flair that Connery lacked - both great as Bond, but Moore personified that sophistication schtick much better.

RIP... agree with all of you about him representing the peak of the JB brand (we're all probaly about the same age- he was the first one I saw in the theaters).  he brought a great combination of extreme british aristocratic class with a bubbling undercurrent of joy/humor to the character and to his other roles.

My favorite Bond by far. Pretty sure I watched "For Your Eyes Only" almost 100 times during the summer of 1983 when it ran constantly on HBO. Moore defined what to be cool was to me.

Yes, all those things.   Classy,  cool, very funny.   Wasn't as "tough" and some of his fight scenes were a tad awkward.. he worked with some terribly campy scripts and played the character a bit too long..  he definitely shouldn't have done "A View to a Kill"  they should've moved to Timothy Dalton right then...  but I loved Live and Let Die, Golden Gun, Spy Who Loved Me, and For Your Eyes Only..   Meh on Moonraker

Yes.  That, along with Goldeneye, are my favorite Bond films (sue me).

your thoughts about the humor and joy conjured up thoughts of David Niven as Bond in the 1967 spoof "Casino Royale" -  recall seeing that on Channel 11 as a kid, was my first exposure to the JB character

As a kid, The opening of Spy who loved me was perfect Bond.

Jaws was the perfect villain.

One summer Octo##### was one of the 4 movies looping on HBO or some channel we had back when there was like 6 channels. I must have watched that movie 30 times.

Realized from the morning talk shows that Moore is Bond to a lot of y'all Xs and Ys. He always seemed anachronistic to me, but Man With the Golden Gun is my favorite Bond flick and i did like him in The Saint backiniday. RIP -

Checking out the IMDB page for "For Your Eyes Only", Moore was 54 when that movie was released. Carole Bouquet, who played Melina, seemed close-ish to his age, was only 24, and Lynn-Holly Johnson, who played the creepy young skater who looked 16, was actually 23.

Would have thought the two females were 10 years apart in age, not one. Meanwhile both are chasing a guy 30 years their senior. The magic of Bond.

Yeah, some of those movies don't hold up that well; I can't imagine anyone liking them for the first time today without the nostalgia bias.   As with others, Moore was my favorite Bond since he was Bond for the first few that I saw.  Connery was probably 'better', but Moore seemed pretty cool when I was 11.

RIP.

Always liked Moore and like others of a particular age in here he was my first introduction to Bond.  I'd be lying if I said I liked him better than Connery but he was always 2nd for me until Craig who I think has passed him for me.  Still will watch most of his Bond movies though while I basically skip all the Dalton and Brosnan movies.

no offense, but she NEVER seemed close-ish to Bond's age.  He was a cradle robber in this one,  I saw this one in the theater.

Dalton could've been so good..  the scripts he had were awful.    If there hadn't been the MGM lawsuit in the early 90's  Dalton would have done Goldeneye and everyone would think of him VERY differently... and they would think of Brosnan very differently without Goldeneye

Good point here.

I celebrate the entire James Bond franchise,  but have always thought that it would be a waste of time someday to have my young boys attempt to watch the Connery/Moore/Dalton  bond movies.    They would hate them.

Also the reference by many that they watched "X" movie 100 times because it was rotating hard on cable...    imagine how that sounds now-a-days to a youngster who has 300 cable channels, netflix,  and an unlimited supply of youtube videos or pr0n...   that would just never happen now.

You must not have kids and a dvd player in the car.  I have movies memorized THAT I HAVE NEVER SEEN.

I liked both Dalton AND Lazenby.  They were just different, that's all.  OHMSS is still my favorite movie.
Lazenby had all the skills to be very good and make a truckload of money.. he messed up... he knows it.. it's one of those lifelong regrets.

OHMSS is a good movie,  Connery should've done that one which had a great script rather than the dumb Las Vegas one he came back for.

However, I'm glad Lazenby quit so that we did get Moore.

i don't have a DVD player in the car...  but you know what you're right.   I have "Frozen" memorized and I've seen half of it once.

I think you'd be surprised.  My kids love 007 movies.  The early ones are definitely paced differently than modern films but the trick is to use the recent ones as an introduction to the character and then feed them the better old ones next.

Moore didn't have much range as an actor but could always be counted upon to provide a proper sort of Britishness to the characters he portrayed.  Bond and Templar took up much of his career but I thought he was very good playing opposite Lee Marvin in "Shout at the Devil", a very entertaining movie set in WWI-era Africa that was directed by Bond director Peter Hunt.

As with many here he was also my first Bond. He was the most "British" of all them and brought a sense of decorum and elegance to the role. As I watched the other Bond movies there are others that I enjoyed more but he's still the one that I identify with my youth.

God speed Sir Roger Moore.

Yeah, my oldest kid loves the new Bond moves and has seen some of the older ones and liked them - may need to buy the full set for Xmas like Cappy and go through all of them with both boys.

Moore was imminently likable and personified what Americans think of as the British archetype. Unflappable and debonair with a dry wit. He was a good Bond in the beginning but he did stay to long. I grew up with Connery and for me he is the Bond measuring stick. But I cut a lot of slack to those that followed because my God some of that writing was atrocious but they still managed to entertain including Moore even at the end of his run. Personally I have Craig as the second best after Connery but Moore is right there and deserves a lot of credit.

So RIP Sir Moore and thank you for all the hours of escape you provided us.

Grew up on Roger Moore Bond films. RIP Sir Roger Moore.

He was my generations 007

He was my third favorite behind Daniels (he has overtaken Moore for me) and the legendary Connery (the best).

But I loved his films. Here are my Moore Bond film rankings:

1) The Spy Who Loved Me - One of the 5 best Bond films ever.

2) Man With The Golden Gun - Loved Christopher Lee in this!

3) Moonraker - Yeah I loved this one....as corny as it was. Loved Drax as a villian.

4) For Your Eyes Only

5) View To A Kill

6) Live And Let Die

7) Octo*****

You didn't even mention how he absolutely crushed it in Spice World.   Saved the whole movie!

I had Octo##### on tape (recorded off of HBO). I must've watched it 50 times. The way he schooled Mishka und Grishka is legendary in my book.

I think FYEO is 2, and Move Moonraker down to 5 and the rest of the list I approve.   Octo##### was just so dumb.. and View to a Kill is a cringe to watch with how old he looked and that crazy black woman villain  turned hero.  Roger Moore mentioned in his memoirs how awful she was to work with.

I've posted about this before in Cappy's thread but I have an irrational love for Live and Let Die.  I think its reputation is hurt because as the first Roger Bond vehicle, he's always unfavorably compared to Connery's portrayal of the character.  But it's a completely different character for the 1970s.   In it's own bizarre, cheesy way, it's a big a departure as the transition from Brosnan to Craig.  Nobody talked about rebooting a series back then but it's exactly what the producers did.

Live and Let Die is ridiculous of course but it's entertaining throughout.  The franchise stepped back a bit from the complete over the top treatment and the rest of the Moore films struck a somewhat more realistic tone.
