Who Won the Montana Special Election? Watch Live Results Here

Republican Greg Gianforte and Democrat Rob Quist square off in a contentious special election—one that included the GOP candidate attacking a reporter on the eve of the vote.

THE DAILY BEAST

05.25.17 6:55 PM ET

The race to fill Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke’s now-vacant congressional seat concludes Thursday, May 25 with a special election in Montana.

The two main candidates are the Democratic nominee Rob Quist—a musician and activist—and the Republican selection Greg Gianforte, who faces new legal issues stemming from a violent incident on the eve of the vote.

While Gianforte awaited a Fox News interview, Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs on Wednesday evening attempted to ask the GOP candidate about the Congressional Budget Office’s scoring of the latest Republican health-care bill.

Gianforte angrily responded, grabbing Jacobs by the neck with both hands—according to a Fox News reporter who witnessed the incident—and body-slamming him to the ground before allegedly punching him and yelling at him. Jacobs pressed charges and Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault shortly before the polls opened statewide.

A substantial portion of the votes were submitted via absentee ballots before the actual election day, but at least three newspapers withdrew their endorsement of Gianforte in light of his actions. Polls close at 8 p.m. local time and results could continue to stream in as voters are allowed to go to the polls so long as they are in line by closing.

Cam someone fill me in on what is going on here? Why is there an election now? How important is this election? Is it like the political war going on in North Carolina?

Its a special election to fill a vacated seat by a Trump appointee.

Should be an easy Repub win.

Anything less that a fairly solid (R) victory will be cause for concern of what it portends

The Congressman from Montana, Ryan Zinke, was named Secretary of the Interior.  So there's a vacancy.  Today's election fills that seat.

Since Montana only has one House seat, the election is statewide.

The race got national attention last night when the Republican candidate, Greg Gianforte, choked and body slammed a reporter.  No shtick.  This really happened.  Gianforte has been charged with misdemeanor assault.

Montana has a strong absentee/vote-by-mail system, and 60-70 percent of the projected total votes cast were by mail and before the assault.

So keep that in mind when tracking the results.

Sounds like the Dems could have run a more experienced candidate.
Oh, yeah.  The Democrat candidate, Rob Quist, is a singer/songwriter who has never held public office.  His politics are self-described as a Bernie Sanders liberal, but there's no legislative record on him.

Most of his songs are about how beautiful Montana is and how great it is to live in the American West.

So he's an America-hating communist?

Back in November, Zinke won by about 80,000 votes (285K-205K), a 56-40 split. (A libertarian got about 16K votes).

Trump beat Hillary 279K-177K. 56.2-35.7.

Gianforte ran for Governor back in November and lost to the incumbent Dem 255K-236K.  50-46.

I don't understand why people think he would lose?

How many Trump supporters have been caught on video threatening people with bodily harm?

Another good Christian patriot added to the GOP roster it seems.   :lmao:
The good news is Congresspeople never have reporters approach them unexpectedly and put microphones or recorders near their faces, so there's little chance Gianforte will have to drop another hippie liberal snowflake for asking the wrong question.

I think people were probably well braced. I don't blame folks if they wished that voters might listen to their better angels.

I wonder what the floor realistically is for underestimating the intelligence and decency of the electorate.

If Hillary had given Charlie Rose a piledriver the night before the election would you have voted for Trump? I don't think so.
