OP:

Get shot - haha

I'll be in Detroit for 3 days around July 4 with my family (wife, 3 kids 10-15).  I've only ever zoomed in, watched a game/attended a conference and zoomed back out the same day, so I've never really spent time there.

What should we see/do there?

Drive through the run down parts and give them a history lesson on the area.  Not trying to be funny here, but its a fascinating part of our country's history.

Depends on what you're into.  Trying to thinking of good activities for kids that age.

The food scene has really exploded down there so I'll dig up some family friendly options

Detroit Zoo isn't bad ...toledo zoo about an hour South just into Ohio is really nice

Tigers game is always nice but I'm not positive if they're in town

Ill see what else I can think of

Henry Ford museum / greenfield village in nearby Dearborn is cool of you're into historical stuff

Eat and drink. I can give recs if you give me an idea of your tastes and exact location.

The Henry Ford is a must- they will actually have lots of cool stuff for 4th of July. It's considered one of the best historical museums in the world. They have the chair Lincoln was killed in, the car JFK was killed in, Rosa Parks bus, Menlo Lab where Edison worked, the Wright Brothers Bicycle Shop, etc. There is an indoor museum thats awesome and an outdoor museum that is a recreation of American towns from early 1900s and transitioning earlier and earlier until you reach the old frontier days.

I'll also be in the area the same time.  Detroit is way cooler than its reputation and always enjoy my time there.

I'll second the Henry Ford Museum.  I was expecting some Model-T cars and maybe some other artifacts of American automotive history.  I was WAY wrong.  That place blew me away and I definitely want to go back.  The chair Lincoln was sitting in when he was assassinated is there, Limo JFK was killed in is there, bus Rosa Parks was in is there.  The place is massive!

Detroit is very spread out and downtown is still full of urban blight, but it's also full of character and great pockets worth exploring.  Craft beer scene is outstanding, food is great, people are friendly...I'll let others chime in, but I'm very pro-Detroit.

Lamby, we hooking up for some beers?

Should be able to make it happen.   Just us or the whole family?   IIRC you guys stay like way north of where I am

We'll be there for a taekwondo tournament in the Cobo Center right on the river downtown.  We'll be staying with some family - I'll be back with that location.

We like history, museums, zoos - family stuff.

We're planning to head up to Dearborn to hit a kebab place my Iraqi coworker recommended.  Those are the only real plans at this point.  We'll have at least one day where we have an early weigh-in, then the whole day is free.

Then The Henry Ford Museum is an absolute must for you. The Detroit Institute of Arts is a top tier American art museum and I believe is the most valuable publicly owned collection of art in the world.  Hitsville U.S.A. is really neat. The turned the Motown studio into a Motown museum. Also, the Charles Wright Museum of African American History is the largest AA museum in the country.

Definitely recommend Henry Ford and Village then

What kebab place?  I'm in Dearborn so I can tell you if it's a good recommendation. Well I can try there's a ton of places

Zoo would be worth it, new penguin exhibit is really cool.

DIA (Art museum) and science center an option as well

There's a river walk that I really haven't had a chance to check out.  Belle Isle maybe worth a drive around

Actually east Dearborn is probably also a cool place to check out. Get some amazing Arabic food and see unique Muslim neighborhoods. Also, can help spread the word that we are not living under sharia fn law.

You can buy a whole city block for 1 dollar.    Splurge while you are in Detroit and drop a hundo and buy the Lions.

I went to the Henry Ford when I was out there for a wedding for a years ago.  As a history nerd, it's a must.  I regret only having an afternoon there. I could have spent days. So many cool things.

That's part of the reason we'd like to go.  I joked that we could take some pictures and send them to our ultra-right-wing relatives to turn into awful chain emails.

The kebab place is Arbeel Kabab on Greenfield Road, and he also recommended a sit-down restaurant called Ishtar on 15 Mile in Sterling Heights.

We'll be staying in Farmington Hills, so NW suburbs.
There's a Dave and Busters (arcade / game place) near there as well

Never heard of it, but i've never really had a bad kebab.  La Pita in Dearborn is a nice sit down place and one of my favorites.   Al Ameer is also really highly rated (think Anthony Bourdain did an episode there) but I haven't been in forever (just not as convenient for me)

There's a pretty sweet mosque on Ford Rd if you want some pictures

This isn't a bad idea. All the people that bought up land near the new LCA arena, all got bought out and made a killing.
My friend just bought several acres downtown for what I think was a few thousand $ and he's going to start farming.

If the Tigers are in town, the ball park is fantastic

Slow's for some BBQ

Echo the Henry Ford Museum suggestion. Great place.

Slow's for some BBQ
Yep

Other food recommendations

Burgers

Green dot stables (Detroit).   Have about 20 different sliders (burgers and also corned beef, muffeleta, fried bologna,  etc).

Miller's (Dearborn) cash only no menu (burgers fries and onion rings).   Toppings available are mustard ketchup pickle and onion.   Damn good burger though

Red coat Tavern (royal oak and West Bloomfield) - opposite of Miller's with tons of topping and bun choice.   Royal oak is the original but Bloomfield location is closer to Farmington

Pizza

Buddy's ( Farmington) Detroit style (thick square with sauce on top) at its best.  Lots of location's.   Nice for dining in.

Supino (Detroit) -  thin crust style with some unusual combinations

Coney dogs (anywhere) -

American and Lafayette in detroit are the famous ones but any local or chain place is good too (Leo's, national, Senate).   Basically Greek diners but with Detroit chili dogs too

Mexican

Lots of options in Mexican town in detroit. Mexican village, Los galanes, Armando, xicomicio

Lots of other great places too but those are probably some of the better family options.   If you want another particular type of cuisine let me know

One of the current favorites in Johnny Noodle King. Insane Ramen. They have been highlighted on the Travel Channel.

Tigers game, Greek town after. Great food and gambling.

If you're in Farmington Hills, Plymouth is a nice area and not too far. Birmingham, Royal Oak and Ferndale have nice restaurant options.  Downtown Detroit is the place to be now. As many have said, great food scene and lots of history to go with the new development.

Campus Martius area is nice. The beach volleyball and restaurants are really cool.

Enjoy

It has a nice small walkable downtown, restaurants, very family friendly...also where I live

Bakers Keyboard Lounge is one of my favorite places but it's not really something to do with kids.
