California will soon be the world's 5th largest economy. (1 Viewer)

You can do that in California too.

But I'm not arguing supply/demand does what it always does and California has more demand then nearly anywhere else in the world, especially Bay area.
Yeah, $250K around here can get you a 3bed 2 bath in a good neighborhood.  Maybe not 2000 sqft but big enough.

California is so much more than the Bay Area and SoCal.

We have new next door neighbors from California (San Jose area). Said that they moved to Michigan because they couldn't afford to continue living there.

Both had good paying jobs. Their 1300 sq ft house in Calif. sold for over $900,000. Mortgage and taxes were killers.

Michigan house they bought was a little over 2,000 sq ft. and paid @ $240,000 for it.
Yeah but Michigan...

$900,000 for a house in the SJ area isn't anything special. And what passes for "good paying jobs" in the bay area is usually just a decent wage. 100k with a family is a situation that sounds nice to some but is in reality a crappy situation.

“We honor our country and our veterans who have made all of this possible (including for the tinker bells) and we can do it with actual real pride, not some put on show just to help our inferior complex ‘show we are different’ type of (crap).”

He goes on to write, “We ARE different from them … We work, have families (and babies we make) enjoy and love the company (and marriage) of the opposite sex and don’t flaunt our differences dressing up like faries (sic) and prancing by the thousands in a parade in nearby San Francisco to be televised all over the world…”

Hickman also referenced the story of Peter Pan.

“So, right now, if you don’t want any faries (sic) to expire, you can clap your hands. See, I do have a heart, I just can’t type and clap at the same time… so I had to make a hard choice didn’t I?”

California has nice beaches, mountains, golf courses, a lot of nice everything...

And then there is Palmdale and Bakersfield

It’s all well and good, and I’ll bet Gavin will stay the course.

Now, when do we address shortfalls regarding HSR, CalPERS, AND CalSTRS?
To Moonbeam’s credit, he has finally come out and said pensions are going to need a haircut.  He won’t do it, but it’s coming.  Most likely in the next recession.

Wow.  What an $$$hole

California teachers do NOT pay into the state's disability insurance program therefore we can't draw from it.

Are you suggesting that people get something for free from the government?  Seems pretty socialist.

BTW:  Every year I opt to pay into a supplemental disability insurance program.  It's pretty cheap.

Hansen used to be a very thoughtful writer. I enjoyed his military articles on the Civil War.

Like so many of the “thoughtful conservative” class, he appears to have sold his soul to the Mephistopheles that is Donald Trump. It’s dismaying just how many of these guys have done this.

The hate for Cali on right wing boreds is borderline insane.  The way they talk about the state, the corrupt dems have destroyed and bankrupted the state and everyone has to stop over human feces and needles where ever they go.

I'm certain that our right wing FBG friends could easily put forth the right wing talking point hate for Cali.

And liberal states are all high taxed hell holes with huge cost of livings and massive income disparity.

Yes, California, the place that's so awful to live in we have multiple cities that have some of the highest real estate prices in the nation.

What's funny about this is that here in Orange County there are still tons of conservatives (despite the most recent electoral results) and when you talk to them, they wouldn't live anywhere else. And who can blame them? Newport Beach? Why would anyone ever want to move away from Newport Beach?

With a major homeless problem.  But your real estate is doing well so to hell with those guys, right?  Oh, and you can spend the weekend at the beach too

Perhaps it's time to consider the possibility that they really were never very thoughtful?   I think the idea that thoughtful people suddenly fell under a trance is bizarre, and happens to also be very convenient for former conservatives.  It's a way to move away from the GOP without admitting that liberals have been right about conservatism for a long, long time.  I realize it's not human nature to admit fault, but you're one of the most thoughtful and well read posters on this board.  I know I was fooled about the GOP for a long, long time myself.  I was wrong.

And we're so economically unstable that we're a net payer from a Federal Tax perspective, while many of the anti-Cali folks live in red states sucking off of our teet.

Yes you and a few others have made this point to me before about a few different people: Dennis Prager. Hugh Hewitt. Alan Dershowitz (though he wasn’t a conservative.) Now Hansen.

But thoughtful is thoughtful. All of these guys in the past wrote stuff that I enjoyed reading because they were insightful and nuanced. Even when I disagreed (quite often) I always found stuff that I learned. Byron York is another like this.

Just because they’re saying and writing stuff now that I find to be nonsensical doesn’t take away what they contributed before. I wasn’t wrong about them; they’ve changed.

It's not a joke. Homeless people come to southern California because the climate is easier to live in without securing a permanent shelter and there are more services for them here than most other locales.
This is obvious.  Do i want to be homeless in minnesota or california?  It's a pretty easy choice\

The US homeless population hasn’t changed much over the last decade, but it’s skyrocketed in CA.  It’s not like California has undergone some massive climate change.  A lot of the new homeless are Californians who couldn’t keep up with rent/housing cost increases.  The solution isn’t to build more shelters, it’s to actually build affordable housing to accomodate population growth.

It’s a complete farce.  Californians will throw money for food and homeless shelters, but god forbid someone build affordable housing near them.  It would impact property values.

combine that with the diminished labor force (who can't find a place to stay near where they are working) to build the affordable housing and the problem is compounded.

Silicon Valley is the worst.  People living in tents and campers because current homeowners have shut down any and all development.  Take a drive through there and tell me there isn’t space everywhere.  People are kidding themselves with this idea that Californians care more about homelessness than their property values.

NIMBY

Complicated issue. Not going to claim to be an expert on this subject by any means but I have spent a lot of time in downtown LA for work over the past decade or so. Skid Row has expanded a lot the past few years. I'd guess the majority of those people are drug addicts or mentally ill.

Yes.  The problem is that once someone becomes homeless the odds of them forgoing medications, turning to drugs, developing mental illness,  etc. skyrockets.  Then you have the kids that now are forced to grow up in that environment.  I think many like to pretend there is nothing that could have been done, but that’s complete BS on its face.  If someone really believes that 50%+ increases in rents, mortgages, etc. aren’t putting families into the streets they deserve a swift kick in the head and a dunce cap.

Edit:  This isn’t meant to be directed at you.  This idea that these people were/are a lost cause permeates the Bay Area.  Sure, people are willing to fight for homeless rights and pay for shelters, but very few are willing to make the sacrifices to actually prevent homelessness.  It’s a crass, inhumane attitude.  These people live in conditions that make immigration detainment centers look like the Ritz.
