This is where I sit down and discuss an issue (or issues) of the day that doesn't necessarily deserve its own thread, but belongs somewhere in the political discussion. Largely culled from blogs left and right, they'll be passing and lighter stories regarding the political side of being and the media that covers it.

A pre-sale Wonkette-esque thing, if you will, but with more, uh, rigor.

Today:

Valerie Plame attempts to buy Twitter and ban Trump. Everyone's favorite spy is back and this time, she's got a real plan! Remember then the outrage du jour was **** Cheney blowing her cover? Yes, no partisan she -- she now simply seeks funds to silence the President.

Awesome!

Well, obviously that didn't necessarily stop you...

No, I think those issues needed their own thread and were backed up by the page hits. Given that, I'm going to start more topics in here rather than dominate the front page with interesting news from the weird world of Holly-Poli.

We will all be waiting with bated breath.

Remember that glamour pic of her and her hubby posing in a ragtop after the GWB Administration kicked them to the curb? She's an attention whore of the first order.

Yep. That was Vanity Fair, IIRC. They were nakedly all-in after the Bush administration. That rag just couldn't wait to see him gone, published hagiographies to Obama, and I don't even know what they're doing with Trump right now.

Such a fall from journalistic grace for a once-great magazine.

Good idea rock

This is definitely the thread for those passing topics that used to make WSJ's Outrage Du Jour. Just a friendly reminder!

This thread reminded me of the band Du Jour from the Josie & The #####cats movie, but I have an irrational love of that movie (my love for Rachel Leigh Cook's starring role is rational though).

CNN interviewing Korie Robertson - one of the Duck Dynasty wives.  Said Trump is wrong about Charlottesville and that his words identified with the racists.  She stopped short of calling him a racist but said if they thought he was a racist they would never have voted for him.  Called on Trump to stop fighting and to unify the country.  Interesting interview as I think she would represent your typical Christian conservative female voter.

I saw this out of the corner of my eye -- my family was having lasagna, and that usually means all my attention is reserved for the goodness -- and wondered really what place it had on CNN...but immediately thought of the R-O-C!

It was interesting, though. She played coy about her voting record and whether or not she'd vote for Trump again. I did think it was likely representative of a lot of thirty or forty something Christian wives in other parts of the country than mine; people and places I am certainly not around every day.

I had a similar idea a few years ago: buy Facebook and ban everyone, totally shut it down. In the end, I just didn't think it was worth the hassle.

Here's a protest song for today's rock du jour.

Q: When you’re writing it, do you think about how your music will impact people?

A: I don’t really think about it when we’re writing it, but when you see the words being used in people’s lives, and that people connect with them, that’s really powerful.

The song “Knocking at the Door” was inspired by the Women’s Marches on Jan. 21. Even though it’s used as a sports anthem, which is really cool, the genesis of the song comes from the social justice movement and getting out there in the streets to let your voice be heard.

We just posted on our Instagram (about a woman who) was at the Trans March in Toronto, and her sign said, “Can’t walk on water but I’m walking through an intersection.” I’m like, that is the coolest sign I’ve ever seen. She’s at the Trans March showing her truest self, celebrating who she is, and she’s using one of our lyrics.

The floral bomber jacket that the singer is wearing on the subway is actually a jacket they sell at Nordstrom Rack online. No lie. It's by a brand called Topman. It's a clothing line/boutique with sort of interestingly-inspired clothes. I own some. I liked that bomber; it wasn't in my size.

The bomber jacket he wears in the building is not one I'm familiar with.

Just figured I'd be fashionable at the party.

Notice I was mute on trans rights. I believe in trans rights as far as non-discrimination goes -- God knows my friend and I hung out at a transgender/transsexual/tranny bar in NY very often; I'm just not sure about the extension of these rights into the public accommodations/policy aspect of it.

For those watching the horse race: The Hill identifies seven seats that might flip in the Senate, five are Democrats.

Democrats should be worried. Despite all the current political rancor and lack of achievements, it doesn't appear there's any broad shift towards progressive policies, in fact the term "liberal" appears to have as negative a connotation as it ever has. I predict doubling down on anti-liberal rhetoric, resulting in Republicans picking up a couple of those vulnerable Senate seats.

Is the DNC going to actually support progressive policies or just pay lip service to it?

There was just a story recently where the head of the DNC had to tell a group of Democrats that Pelosi supporter single payer behind closed doors but that there was only so much she could do in public. This was not good enough for the group.

The DNC will tack left if the public drags it, kicking and screaming.

I love the point that the "resistance" is largely made up of privilege rather than the socialists and dispossessed of yore.

"Which of the following is a smarter career move at Google, at an Aspen Institute colloquium, on the set of Disney, in a CNN newsroom, at a Citibank retreat, in the Yale faculty lounge, on the beach at Martha’s Vineyard, while sunning on David Geffen’s yacht, or talking on a panel at the National Press Club: to admit to voting for Donald Trump, or to proudly proclaim you are a member of the Resistance?"

Long overdue.  The Obama administration seriously botched Title IX in higher education.
Yeah, it was nice to see the "Dear Colleague" letter was no longer binding. That said, what will all the people filling all the new administrative positions do?

And despite me calling him a left-wing loon, the author makes a point...what standard takes the now-old guidance's place?

The issue as I see it is that colleges and universities have a vested interest in downplaying sexual assaults on their campuses.  Basically, it's bad for business, so many will sweep improprieties under the rug if possible. While not ideal, the "Dear Colleague" letter did send a message to college admins that a systematic practice of "looking the other way" would have consequences.

It's like yelling fire in a crowded Theater...

which is in the midst of being shaken by an 8.3 earthquake.
Or like getting worked up about the NFL when you're in charge of the nuclear security of our country and North Korea is launching missiles over Japan.
