2017 RB Lotto Ticket Rankings

Recommended Posts

Last year we had a thread that folks seemed to find valuable so I am starting a 2017 version - it's a living, ongoing list of potential King Makers - the idea is to be PREEMPTIVE on RBs most likely sitting on the Waiver Wire (depending upon league size, sharks or guppies, etc.).  The definition of this thread is generally re-draft. Last year's thread is here.

Please note that this list is being updated every week on subsequent pages - what follows is the state of the list pre-week-1.

To paraphrase @TZMarkie from last year: "This is for re-draft and we are looking for the ones with the best combination of availability, upside and possibility of a big workload. That combination would likely give the average owner the best chance at hitting the "lottery ticket RB" that could change an owners season...The point is, regardless of however you see it, and whatever your league preference and/or breakdown may be, in most cases a typical owner (think redraft with 5-7 bench spots) will only be able to truly "take a shot" on one or two of these guys"

I don't have time to watch film so I am dependent upon the opinions of others.  I am going to give the list a jump start by plagiarizing content from footballguys articles.  The list will change over the course of the season due to injuries, promotions, etc.

Candidates for Season Changing RBs for re-draft 2017 going forward - Here is a Pre-Week-1 list, completely (for now) un-ranked:

  • TEN Derrick Henry
  • TBB Jacquizz Rodgers
  • BUF Jonathan Williams
  • WAS Samaje Perine
  • GB Jamaal Williams - per @Dope - I think he's establishing himself as 1b with his camp. One missed Pass Protection from Ty that scrambles A-aron's brain, and the roles flip and Jamal takes the Lacy role.
  • SF Joe Williams - per @groin pains - Early reports are Matt Breida has leap frogged Joe Williams
  • NE Dion Lewis - his ADP was really low this summer - per @Dope - Talent wise, he should be 1st. But it's Belichek. And an incredibly crowded backfield. No way he becomes the feature. Not that I see anyway.
  • PHI W Smallwood
  • NO Alvin Kamara (PPR leagues only)
  • DEN rookie DeAngelo Henderson
  • DAL A Morris?
  • PIT James Conner
  • OAK - which non-Lynch RB? per @Dope - OAK - Richard - Total guess. This is a blind spot for me. I totally do not believe in Marshawn, but the Oakland line is top rated...so someone is going to benefit. I seriously should have bought stock in Richard or Washington and yet i didn't even consider it. Big miss for me probably
  • DEN D Booker
  • IND Mack
  • per @groin pains - Pumphrey or Clement may be the dart throw there as far as a lottery ticket goes
  • per @groin pains - other dart throws that I do not see is T. Cohen RB Chi and Chris Carson RB Sea
  • per @Ilov80s - I would think Rex Burkhead NE applies still. The roles in NE could be messy but he's the only NE back with the combo of size and receiving ability to if injuries or poor performance befall other backfield mates

Thoughts?  Opinions?

P.S. The WR/TE version of this thread is  2017 WR (and TE) Lotto Ticket Rankings

I'll take a crack at this:

GB Jamaal Williams - I think he's establishing himself as 1b with his camp. One missed Pass Protection from Ty that scrambles A-aron's brain, and the roles flip and Jamal takes the Lacy role.

TEN Derrick Henry - He fits the mindset of what Tenn is trying to do with it's run game. DeMarco was rejuvenated playing there last season...and some think DH is better.

PHI W Smallwood - I passed on him in my redraft and im regretting it. Only downside is that the backfield is crowded right now.

NO Alvin Kamara (PPR leagues only) - This guy has 2 legit NFL running backs ahead of him, but could EXPLODE if given a chance with Payton and Brees.

BUF Jonathan Williams - Appears to have all the skills. Inside, outside, can catch. McCoy typically misses time. ***and on cut day is released by the Bills***

IND Mack - Gore is older than I am and I graduated college in the 30's.

TBB Jacquizz Rodgers - Only this high because he gets a chance from jump. When that happens sometimes you get the Wally Pipp.

OAK - Richard - Total guess. This is a blind spot for me. I totally do not believe in Marshawn, but the Oakland line is top rated...so someone is going to benefit. I seriously should have bought stock in Richard or Washington and yet i didn't even consider it. Big miss for me probably.

DAL A Morris - This is the guy. I have him so low because why? McFadden in front of him, Zeke looks like he's gonna play. I have this guy on my dynasty as a golden ticket, so i'm ranking him low because that rarely works out for me.

PIT James Conner - I like the cut of Conner's jib. But c'mon...LeVeon Bell is quitting that Dairy Queen job when he sees what real people make.

WAS Samaje Perine - A few weeks ago he'd be up near the top of this list. Struggles in camp are not ideal.

NE Dion Lewis - Talent wise, he should be 1st. But it's Belichek. And an incredibly crowded backfield. No way he becomes the feature. Not that I see anyway.

SF Joe Williams - Hyde TOOK that job this august. Joe is getting passed as the darling by that other kid.

DEN rookie DeAngelo Henderson DEN D Booker - Yuck-1 and Yuck-2

That was tough. A lot of guys are really close and if 20 people respond, you'll easily have 20 different list. I think JW in GB is clearly the top though.

Looking more and more like Zeke will be available, so not so high on A. Morris.  Early reports are Matt Breida has leap frogged Joe Williams.  Wendell Smallwood stock is skyrocketing on reports Blount may be cut.  Pumphrey or Clement may be the dart throw there as far as a lottery ticket goes.  Oakland, I am grabbing De. Washington everywhere I can.  He has looked like the stronger RB and I have ZERO faith in Lynch.    Couple other dart throws that I do not see is T. Cohen RB Chi and Chris Carson RB Sea.  Carson has looked to be the best RB on that roster based on what I saw this pre season.

As we did last year, I take inputs from others and continuously update The List myself.

Basically this is like a campfire chat and I am the Meeting Notes taker.  I can't include everyone's opinion in The List but will quote highlights as I see fit.

Your input is appreciated @Dope!

I would think Rex Burkhead applies still. The roles in NE could be messy but he's the only NE back with the combo of size and receiving ability to if injuries or poor performance befall other backfield mates, Rex will always have a chance to cut into their work. Dion Lewis and James White aren't going to become GL backs and Gillislee isn't going to become a big pass catcher. Rex could do either or both.

Agreed with Burkhead and Kamara for above reasons...the third guy I really have my eye on is CJ Prosise...staying healthy is a major concern but he really appeared to be on the doorstep of breaking out last year when he went down...I think he's pretty talented and has nice size...at minimum he should have a defined role with this offense but there is an opening for more as Lacy doesn't look like anything special right now and Rawls appears to have his own staying on the field concerns as well...

Reposting from another thread:

You are all wrong. Matt Brieda. He has out played Williams and is locked into the number two role. We all know Hyde can't stay healthy. Can't remember what website but it puts Hyde at an 87% chance of being injured. Brieda could easily play the Coleman role out the gate for Shannahan with a possibility for more playing time behind an oft injured Hyde. The guy had crazy Sparq scores (like McKinnon except Brieda has played rb his whole life). You heard it here first. Grab him while he is free.

Also Cohen and Freeman are my second guesses.

K. Hunt is the new golden prospect, but rooks have a tendency to wear down, and anybody can get hurt.

Don't sleep on C. West, who had success as a feature back the same time Ware did, and could, jump, into the role again if something happens to Hunt.

I've been thinking this tbh, that Charc West could be the clever pickup. He's at least had time in the driving seat before and once upon a time seemed to occupy a role ahead of Ware.

Cant remember but, what's his pass pro like ? Andy Reid may prefer a more experienced hand on the tiller at times

He was a 3rd down back for a while, so it can't be terrible.  Spiller has a ton of experience in pass pro too, though, so the risk of a timeshare behind Hunt is not to be discounted.

I think Kamara is a JAG, I'd take Henry and Burkhead over everyone mentioned on this thread. Burkhead has the size to move the chains and is probably the best all around back in NE with Lewis. I see Gills and White as specialists.

Henry- looks like the KC situation with Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson. One injury away from being a true #1RB

Kamara - Looks like a JAG to me, he doesn't have anything special about him,he will never be as good as Ingram or what ADP is now.

Foreman -opportunity to be in a full blown RBBC as the other guy isn't built to be a real RB that can last an entire season.

Perine - looks like a good RB, probably the best RB on the roster. I fully expect him to be the lead back in the 2nd half.

Henderson (Denver)- See Perine

As for the rest of this- these are all journeyman or future journyman. Temper all expectations, they may tease you for a game or 2.

TBB Jacquizz Rodgers

GB Jamaal Williams

SF Joe Williams

PIT James Connor

DEN D Booker

IND Mack

SF Joe Williams on IR

ROTO

"49ers placed fourth-round RB Joe Williams on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

A hot name this offseason, Williams was buried on the depth chart by the end of August, and it is likely the 49ers were looking for any option to stash the running back without burning a roster spot. With Williams and Tim Hightower gone, UDFA rookie Matt Breida is the back to own behind Carlos Hyde."

The game I saw SEA play vs. the Chargers this preseason, Chris Carson (already mentioned) looked like the best RB on the team. Was hoping for last or 2nd to last round nab there, but someone swooped in an got him in the early teens. So maybe need to plan on taking him a bit sooner in remaining drafts.

On the flip side, the one WAS game I saw last week, Perine looked average at best and Kelly looked pretty good. I think Kelly might be a bargain this year.

Looking to acquire Henderson and Jonathan Williams too. Haven't seen them much, but the shark pool publicity makes them intriguing.

Which of these three lottery tickets would you invest in?

  • Tarik Cohen
  • Chris Carson
  • Matt Breida

Cohen will get touches as he's been dynamic in the preseason. Breida has the shortest path to starting, but for some reason I think Carson will have the most value by season end.

I dropped Carson for Breida today. My thoughts are Hyde is injury prone and Carson has 3 other Rbs to contend with. Plus I own Hyde.

Connor.. Bell will t miss time by showing up very late in preseason( yesterday in fact) ..I can hear his hammy tearing up as we speak.he has played a full season once right? well I doubt he repeats it again this year..Connor will have a significant role this season.

Foreman. Carson. Jamaal Charles. Coleman. Gallman  NYG..Chris Thompson.

How do we know Terrell Watson isn't Bell's handcuff?

Good question. Conner had decent preseason stats, but left yards on the field in the clips I saw.

I think Cohen can be special however I am concerned with Chicago's ability to utilize him to his fullest. I would put Carson 2nd and Brenda 3rd.

Who is David Johnson's backup?  Kerwynn?

Yes.

In regards to the Raiders I have read that Dewayne Washington is the RB behind Lynch during training camp and preseason unless this changed recently? It is likely a situation where the two would split again if Lynch is injured, but Washington may be the COP who plays more when Lynch is healthy.

Yes, Washington is the #2 behind Lynch right now.  But I think if Lynch underperforms or goes down, that it'll be a 50/50 split between Washington and Richard.

That said, Richard looked like the more explosive and well-rounded runner last year to my eyes. I'm holding in him one of my dynasty leagues over Washington.

Alex Collins. Seahawks released him but he was a 5th round pick last year and had a decent but not great preseason. Could land in a nice spot with RB needy team. The nice part is that he shouldn't be drafted so you don't need to roster him yet. If he doesn't get picked up by a NFL team, nothing lost. If he does, then go from there. I don't think he is ultra talented but he isn't trash either. He can handle goal line work and catch passes.

great thread back for another season, thanks daylight.

thinking Hyde will have a good season as long as he's upright. Since that is probably a matter of time, investing in Breida as a handcuff (drafted Hyde). he looks legit. even without Joe Williams getting on IR this weekend, think Breida had a legit chance to leapfrog he and Hightower. love the upside here.

guys no longer on my waiver already with lots of hype out there i like: kamara, cohen and carson. hype has gone too high for my taste for these three guys, all three needs injuries or suspensions ahead of them to really show any impact imo. good talent behind better talent, so solid lottery picks though.

If Deangelo Williams taught us anything, being the primary backup in the Pittsburgh backfield is a lottery ticket worth having.  James Connor looks to be the only crab in that bucket right now.

While a bigger name and probably older then a lot of the other names I think Shane Vereen has lotto potential...unless Perkins picks things up that backfield does not have much talent...it is a solid offense so there will be opportunity for an RB to put up numbers...this is odd to say but when you look at their depth chart Vereen could actually be the most talented RB on the roster...if you look at his numbers (and by no means is it a big sample size) when he got hurt last year it looked like he was starting to carve out a nice role for himself that could produce some sneaky fantasy points...fast-forward to this season and not much has changed in that unit except Gallman coming in and Jennings going...he seems to be a forgotten guy (for good reason) but could be worth a flyer as an end of daft option...

TB: Quizz Rodgers is the handcuff, but he's too small to handle serious carries. Martin is RB1, expect an RBBC when he's out. One darkhorse is Peyton Barber who the team likes. It's possible that in the first 3 weeks of Martin's suspension he supplants Quizz.

Someone rank these 3 guys for this year in non-Ppr:

Smallwood

perine

jamaal williams

I've got all 3 on my bench in redraft with 4 rbs ahead of them.  Thinking I'd like to free up a roster spot.  I think Smallwood is definitely ahead of the other two.  Who would you drop?

Updated based on recent comments - updates in red - and I split (as we did last year) into 3 lists:  Candidates, Honorables and Too Late.

Thoughts on how I broke it up between Candidates and Honorables? Especially is Mike Tolbert now the #2 - is he a potential King Maker if Shady goes down?

The definition of this thread is generally PREEMPTIVE in re-draft:

To paraphrase  @TZMarkie from last year: "This is for re-draft and we are looking for the ones with the best combination of availability, upside and possibility of a big workload. That combination would likely give the average owner the best chance at hitting the "lottery ticket RB" that could change an owners season...The point is, regardless of however you see it, and whatever your league preference and/or breakdown may be, in most cases a typical owner (think redraft with 5-7 bench spots) will only be able to truly "take a shot" on one or two of these guys".

Candidates for "Season Changing"/"Champion Maker" RBs for re-draft 2017 going forward - Here is my Pre-Week-1 list,  LOOSELY ranked:

  • TEN Derrick Henry - I realize he was drafted in most leagues but if he isn't...
  • PIT James Conner - personally I have noticed over the years that players who hold out (L Bell) all summer and pre-season tend to get hurt
  • GB Jamaal Williams - per  @Dope - I think he's establishing himself as 1b with his camp. One missed Pass Protection from Ty that scrambles A-aron's brain, and the roles flip and Jamal takes the Lacy role.
  • NE Dion Lewis - his ADP was really low this summer - per @Dope - Talent wise, he should be 1st. But it's Belichek. And an incredibly crowded backfield. No way he becomes the feature. Not that I see anyway.
  • NE Rex Burkhead - per @Ilov80s - I would think Rex Burkhead NE applies still. The roles in NE could be messy but he's the only NE back with the combo of size and receiving ability to if injuries or poor performance befall other backfield mates - per @hardcoredx : Burkhead has the size to move the chains and is probably the best all around back in NE with Lewis. I see Gillislee and White as specialists.
  • NO Alvin Kamara (PPR leagues only)
  • SF Matt Breida - I am including him in the Candidate List out of respect for Shannahan's offense
  • ARIZONA - David Johnson's Backup:  Kerwynn Williams or Andre Ellington ?

Honorable Mention (not quite enough upside to be a King Maker d/t lack of talent, workload, surrounding talent, etc.), NOT ranked:

  • DEN J Charles - suggested by @mnmplayer
  • PIT Terrell Watson? (instead of James Conner)?
  • OAK - which non-Lynch RB? per @Dope - OAK - Richard - Total guess. This is a blind spot for me. I totally do not believe in Marshawn, but the Oakland line is top rated...so someone is going to benefit. - per @joey :  it'll be a 50/50 split between Washington and Richard. That said, Richard looked like the more explosive and well-rounded runner last year to my eyes
  • IND Mack
  • IND Matt Jones (released by WAS, signed by IND Sept 3)
  • PHI W Smallwood -
  • PHI Pumphrey - per @groin pains : Pumphrey or Clement may be the dart throw there as far as a lottery ticket goes
  • PHI Clement - per @groin pains : Pumphrey or Clement may be the dart throw there as far as a lottery ticket goes
  • TBB Jacquizz Rodgers
  • TBB Peyton Barber suggested by @btemp
  • KCC K Hunt per @Arodin: K. Hunt is the new golden prospect, but rooks have a tendency to wear down, and anybody can get hurt.
  • KCC C West per @Arodin: Don't sleep on C. West, who had success as a feature back the same time Ware did, and could, jump, into the role again if something happens to Hunt.
  • BUF Jonathan Williams - CUT BY BILLS SEP 3 - is Mike Tolbert now the #2 - is he a potential King Maker if Shady goes down?
  • WAS Samaje Perine - per @hardcoredx : looks like a good RB, probably the best RB on the roster. I fully expect him to be the lead back in the 2nd half.
  • CHI Tarik Cohen -suggested by @Franknbeans and @groin pains - per @King of the JungleI think Cohen can be special however I am concerned with Chicago's ability to utilize him to his fullest.
  • SEA CJ Prosise suggested by @Boston
  • SEA Chris Carson suggested by @groin pains
  • HOU D'Onta Foreman suggested by @yellowdog
  • DEN rookie DeAngelo Henderson - per  @hardcoredx: looks like a good RB, probably the best RB on the roster. I fully expect him to be the lead back in the 2nd half.
  • DEN D Booker
  • DAL A Morris
  • CIN J Hill - per @QuizGuy66 : only owned in 18% of ESPN leagues...
  • NYG S Vareen - per @Boston : I think Shane Vereen has lotto potential...unless Perkins picks things up that backfield does not have much talent...it is a solid offense so there will be opportunity for an RB to put up numbers...this is odd to say but when you look at their depth chart Vereen could actually be the most talented RB on the roster...if you look at his numbers (and by no means is it a big sample size) when he got hurt last year it looked like he was starting to carve out a nice role for himself that could produce some sneaky fantasy points...fast-forward to this season and not much has changed in that unit except Gallman coming in and Jennings going...he seems to be a forgotten guy (for good reason) but could be worth a flyer as an end of daft option...
  • LAR Malcolm Brown - suggested by @crowe1130 : Clear backup to Gurley

Too Late or No Longer Applicable (guys who have already broken out or are injured):

  • SF Joe Williams - SEP 3 PUT ON INJURED RESERVE - per @groin pains - Early reports are Matt Breida has leap frogged Joe Williams - - per  @Weebs210 (re-posting from another thread) You are all wrong. Matt Breida. He has out played Williams and is locked into the number two role. We all know Hyde can't stay healthy. Can't remember what website but it puts Hyde at an 87% chance of being injured. Breida could easily play the Coleman role out the gate for Shannahan with a possibility for more playing time behind an oft injured Hyde. The guy had crazy Sparq scores (like McKinnon except Breida has played rb his whole life). You heard it here first. Grab him while he is free.
