Was talking to my twins today about Christmas and stuff they may want and one of my boys says, "I would like a Supreme Hoodie."    I am thinking nice how much could a hoodie cost!    WTF!!!!  1k plus if you can even find one for sale.   I know that retail is not that high but I guess everyone buys up all the retail available and sells them on eBay for 10 times as much.     Who TF needs a 500 dollar hoodie when you are in junior high school.

Okay, I read it.  I can't link to it, because every search on Supremacy comes up with white supremacy garbage.  

But yeah, it's an exclusive clothing line that has quite the cult following, and sells out within minutes of going on sale, a lot of it for private resale because the kids love it. It's a former Stussy offshoot, IIRC.

How in the hell does a kid from middle America even know about this lunacy?     I was reading online where people wait in a queue for up to 5 hours just to see if any shirts or whatever you wanted are still available when they let you in the store!   WTF!?

It's big with kids; I have no words for it. Once you get older, you stop putting stock in trendier things, though status symbols and status brands remain. 

He probably heard about it from friends. Status causes us to do weird things when we are young, I guess.

People are supremely stupid. It’s the same reason you see grown-ups waiting in line in the cold for 10 hours to get that sweet new LCD with slightly more HDs and 1080i’s and p’s.

In junior high, everyone is scrambling to set their social position. Things like expensive trendy clothing can help. I never had anything this extreme but you I definitely had expensive Jordans and Starter Jackets, etc. 

 
I bet FBGs gear could have this kind effect given the proper exposure.  I'm thinking featured in a shuke v GM eating challenge video.

Or maybe an Oats $5k home project video.

The majority of early teens in America are all tuned in to the same things on Youtube, social media, etc.  If something catches on, it can easily explode across the country.

BTW:  My twin 14 year old daughters and 10 year old step son do not even watch network TV.  Not sure they even know how to work it right.  But damn if they know Netflix and Youtube.  I know Google already bought it, but if they didn't I'd damn sure by buying some Youtube stock.  They are happy on Youtube ALL DAY LONG.

so true.  my kids eat that up.  that being said, knowing about $1k sweatshirts and actually buying one are 2 widely different things.

Yeah it's funny, kids have no idea about any network TV shows or any movies that aren't superheroes, cartoons or horror movies.

The culture of it is interesting, and I follow it a little bit, mainly because I'm interested in how young kids have the money.  

Supreme is slick.  They do drops, or releases, and everything is limited.  These kids stand in line, just trying to get ONE piece, and regular kids can pull a few hundred together for one item they know they will probably have the only one of among their circle.  Kids always manage to find money for Jordans, it's the same principle,

It's just another status thing, like women getting a certain kind of bag, or shoes.  

Anything like that for guys, where limited edition makes it more valuable?  Bourbon?  Wristwatches?

 
Won't lie. My teenage sons are into this stuff. Don't own any - except for a cell phone case - but they would definitely like to. There's another brand called A Bathing Ape (true story) called Bape for short that's similar to Supreme. There's definitely a subculture out there.

Acer, we're probably pretty similar in our disposition, but I still don't think it's okay to punch Nazis. 

It's certainly not right to punch 13-year-olds over clothing. It's awful.

Just make a piece of clothing and charge a #### ton.   Just get some cool kids to wear it, or celebrity I guess and you are golden.         Whatever happened to t-shirts and levis?

The draw to streetwear (excluding Bape and Supreme cause most people buying that don't even wear them) is the exclusivity of the clothing. These brands often make one batch of any single item. Most are actually affordable, don't let the big brands fool you. If you don't buy it when you see it, you miss out forever. People who buy this stuff wanna stand out from the crowd. If they wanted to look like any Joe Schmoe, then yeah, they'll go out to the local department store and buy some Levi/Wrangler jeans with a single color $5 cotton tee or a flannel.

So you can't stand out unless you spend a ton of money?  Let's be honest, it's not about standing out, it's about expensive conformity.

If someone truly wanted to stand out, they'd design and make their own clothes.
