BTTF 2018: MLB123746 (1 Viewer)

I don’t think the sim is built for it. You can’t pitch position players, even if you just want to save innings, and you can’t pinch hit with pitchers.

I have no problem with allowing it if the sim is built for it, I just don’t think it is.
Very, very occasionally ... the sim will take it upon itself to use a pitcher as a pinch-hitter for another pitcher. Has to be a bizarre 18-inning game or something where the bench is depleted.

PS: Still upset that I never had Ruth in a Sim. :kicksrock:

I did like that year having Walter Johnson's best year AND Pete Alexander's best year, though.

I thought that in his early seasons, Babe Ruth was in WIS as both a pitcher and a hitter? Is that not so?
This is what I thought, as well.
I stand corrected -- just went and checked. Jfranco is right. Babe Ruth 1915-17 is a pitcher only, and after that is a hitter only.

I could've sworn it was different way (way) back when we were first doing these WIS things.

One of the benefits of Live, as you could use whomever you wanted, where you wanted (although defense would be an issue I'd assume, for most pitchers)

As long as I've been playing, it's always been this way. 15-17 pitcher only, 18+ hitter only.

I tried to use Doc Crandall as a PH in one of the old time sim leagues.  Even when set all my bench hitters to rest, Sparky still wouldn't use Crandall as a PH unless all bats had been used.

I was asking about WIS in general, what year was the all time draft that kicked it off? Can't remember any of my team, think I had Bob Gibson :oldunsure:
So we were doing WIS XVI in 2013. Lost my mom in the middle of the draft and everyone was cool enough to pause things and let me catch up. The original All-Time Drafts, All-Time Alphabet Drafts and the like started over at Rotojunkie probably in early to mid 2000s. I have an email from John Franco with all eligible hitters with a title "VD 4 Hitters." ** Email was on 11/05/2004**

I think we did the draft in 2004, WIS in early 2005 for that.

Lefty Grove was one of my pitchers (did me better in the voting than he did in the SIM, IIRC), A Rod was my SS and I think Griff Jr. was my CF.  Pretty sure I used Memorial Stadium in an homage to my Orioles focused early youth.

We were drafting WIS III in the fall of 2005. I can remember making picks for that one from an apartment I only lived in for 4 months.

I graduated college in spring of 2003 and I know we hadn't started this yet. So I'm thinking the all-time draft was late 2003 at the earliest, more likely 2004.

Or even easier go to account on WIS and go to user profile. i was late to the game apparently

Unless you're an extreme :nerd:  like me and signed up in 2001 before we started doing these drafts. :bag:
That's where I got my info - my join date was Jan 2005, which is why I assumed we drafted in 2004.

FWIW, I tried searching for the original all time MLB draft, but to no avail. :sadbanana:

Also, where's BaseballTangent(tm) when you need it!

By 2006, we were already on our fourth - did like two a year plus those early years.  Can't find an actual forum page yet, but found this:

Feb 10 2006, 03:28 PM
In: WIS IV Draft (1946-1968)
By: KraftSingles

I am pretty sure that was the Larry Plateau draft (aka, the Tony Oliva Dilemma)

The first (and second) appearance of Gary Peters

Found an email from LarryBoy as he attempted LarrySheets.
Harrier Rankings were the best.

And by best, I mean as good or bad as anyone elses - but did have the benefit of making Harrier appear to be some genius on all things sim baseball.

After never winning a league that drafted for the SIM and then possibly going to jail, he was barely heard from, again.

I think I cracked harrrrrankings in one of the sims. I analyzed past sim results and made a convoluted formula to evaluate players. Every time I picked someone really obscure that was on nobody else's radar, Harrier would tell me I sniped him. I ended up losing 100 games.

He's at ASU now

Yep, December 2004 was the start of what would become the WIS I draft. Initially, it was just a Best All-Time Baseball Players Draft or something -- it was roughly halfway through that discussion took root of a way to play our squads against one another. Mrharrier, since he had played it before, took to the WIS proposal right away -- I hope I wasn't the only one who internally asked "Who?" when he drafted Cupid Childs at 2B late in that first draft.

Drafts were very casual back then ... that first draft was lasted until late January 2005. WIS I kicked off shortly afterward.

We were "chain drafting" for a while, kicking off the next WIS draft as soon as the prior league's World Series wrapped up. WIS II draft was May 2005, WIS III was September/October 2005. WIS IV was January 2006 ... I remember shooting the breeze in the draft thread about buying a car at that time.

I never could find the original thread on FBG, but I've found some Baseball Tangent draft threads via the Wayback Machine site.

I remember the Tony Oliva Larry Plateau trade as I was on my least fav phone EVAH - trying to scroll through the thread on a freakin' blackberry pearl (ye of the repeated post syndrome).  Judging by the bar I was at, must have been a mid-week daytime drinking day.

I remember my failed Dave Stieb being made while taking a whizz at the urinal pick at Foxwoods Casino during my mid-WIS period slump.  I made like the first 7 or 8 playoffs, winning a couple WS, but then fell off the cliff and just sucked for a few seasons before finding a new approach and getting back to the top of the mountain. And what glorious views they were.

One really smart person started archiving the results of these drafts and posted them in post No. 2 of each draft. Newbies have dropped the ball there.
