As opposed to making the title of your thread an anti-semitic remark in hopes of getting people to click on it?

I was being tongue-in-cheek. In case you couldn't tell by the long-winded, two sentence...

This is really the title of this thread?

I'm all for controversy and provocation, but doesn't this seem a bit much? Can't you give it a long-winded, two sentence, make it a pain in the butt for everyone on the cellphone title? I can help.

It's TOTALLY the title of the thread.  Here's why:  Over the last year or so I finally figured out that we don't actually care about gun violence.  When I say "we" I mean everyone, generally.  But also me.  And you.  Specifically you.  Neither you, or I, or anyone else in the USA care one bit.

When someone is killed we talk about what needs to change and offer thoughts and prayers but no one ever actually, you know, does anything.  Sometimes if the victims are extra young or white or pretty we think and pray even more, but really we don't care.

And far from sitting idly thinking and praying, we affirmatively support gun violence too.  We don't really petition the government to do anything.  We certainly keep electing representatives beholden to the NRA.

Sure, lots of people like to point out that other countries don't have the gun violence we have.  But we don't mind.  We're proud of our right to bear little death machines.  It's our heritage.  Besides, some people like to kill animals with the death machines even more than they like to kill people, and it would be un-####ing American to not let them do this.  Did you know that America is founded on the principle that you can do any ####ing hobby you want, even if stuff dies, and no one can take that away from you.  It's awesome.

So, having come to this realization I thought - wait a second - if we accept that gun violence is the price we pay for having legalized weapondry, isn't it a little pointless to go through feeling sad every time an innocent person gets killed by a gun?

For example, you might feel bad about this 14 year old girl who was killed in Kentucky the other day.  They've shown her school dance picture and she was young and vibrant, with a beautiful life ahead of her.  Today, in hindsight, it seems like kind of a shame that she had to be killed the other day.  It almost makes you want to think and pray.

But guess what?  Tomorrow, or maybe next week, or maybe next month, another kid will be killed in school.  Or another disgruntled worker will execute his five office-mates before turning the gun on himself.  Or a lone wolf psycho will get him some high powered assault rifles and a bump stock and slaughter dozens of people at the county fair.

And we KNOW, as we sit here today, that those 31 people mentioned in the last paragraph are going to die.  Of course we're not sure which school or office or fair will get shot up, but one of them will.  Probably more than one.

So we sit here doing nothing about those 31 people who's senseless violent deaths could be stopped if we just did something.  We do nothing about the hundreds of lives that will be ruined because their family member or friend or coworker died.

If we don't care or act or think or pray for all those people that we already know are going to be slaughtered sometime in the near future, why would we care when it actually happens?  The answer, I think, is that we don't care when it actually happens.  We only pretend to care because it seems like everyone else is also pretending to care.  Like someone told a joke that you don't get but everyone else is kind of laughing so you kind of laugh too.

That's why I chose that thread title.  That's why I thought it'd be good to catalog school shootings as they happen.

Because in America, school deaths simply aren't something to be sad about.  Did the Aztecs feel thinky and prayee when slaves were ceremonially gutted and thrown down the pyramid?  No.  Dead school children are our society's sacrifice to the NRA and Second Amendment gods.  Yay shootings!  USA, USA!!

A like seems insufficient.  We should be able to play ****, marry, kill with posts so that I could marry this one.

Thanks.

I did know about those.  Not all of them, of course.  But I knew there were lots.  They all kind of run together when you just read a long list.  It gets boring.

This thread isn't to re-ignore all those past school shootings. We ignored them before.

This thread is to ignore and celebrate new ones, one at a time, hopefully right as they happen.  I intend to update the thread each time there is a new school shooting this year.  It won't be perfect, because a lot of the time it's not widely reported.  But I'll do my best.

I'll take it farther.  What if the Bill of Rights had a right allowing families the absolute control over their children's bodies (which doesn't seem that far off with these crazy "religious freedom" cases these days).  And we'd hear, every year, about tens of thousands of girls being subjected to genital mutilation.  And we'd all agree that this seems awful.  But there would be a powerful lobbying group that said, "Hey, the Founders obviously found the right to be important!"  And despite the fact that it seems that the Founders were not aware of the practice of female genital mutilation at that time, and that some Constitutional scholars believed that the right was originally intended to only mean that parents had a right to prevent the government from encroaching on the bodies of their children, that lobbying group had enough control over enough legislators that it was considered an impossibility to regulate female genital mutilation.  And even if you could, that same lobbying group had ensured that the Federal Courts were stacked with judges who would overturn such legislation anyway.

At what point would the people just rise up and say, "We don't care.  Amend the ####### Constitution if that's what it takes.  We're not going to stand for this?"

Of course we're not sure which school or office or state fair will get shot up, but one of them will.  Maybe more than one.

So we sit here doing nothing about those 31 people who's senseless violent deaths could be stopped if we just did something.  We do nothing about the hundreds of lives that will be ruinied because their family member or friend or coworker died.

USA, USA!!

All my likes. Forever

Very fair questions.

I've thought a lot about why I'm not doing anything and if there's really anything I can do.  I signed up last night for various "coalitions to end gun violence" but I don't have much hope that they will have any impact or that I will even follow through.  I will say that in my job and charitable endeavors I spend a decent amount of time counseling criminal defendants and youth about the pointlessness of gun violence, about satying positive, off drugs, etc.  So I guess that may be "doing something," but I can't say that it's ever been effective.  I've seen more than enough instances of two 18 year olds losing their lives because they fight over something ridiculously stupid like a gold chain and one shoots the other.  One dies and the other one goes to prison for life and there was no point to any of it.

So I care to the extent that I feel sad about everyone getting killed by guns, but there's honestly a part of me that is so frustrated that I feel the sentiment of my post - Basically, this is the decision that we as a society have made, or at least decided to live with.  So F' it, we're just reaping what we've sown and I shouldn't waste any emotional energy on it.

I wrote the post I wrote, and edited it for Facebook and posted it there.  That's not gonna end gun violence obviously but I do think there's some value to the idea that we should be focusing on future gun deaths more than gun deaths that just occurred.  Maybe the reason nothing ever changes is that we only think about gun violence in the wake of a tragedy, and then we spend our energy feeling bad for the victim and family, and psychoanalyzing the shooter.

I almost want to bring one of my kids to city hall or the state house and say "This is my son randall jr.  He is scheduled to be shot and killed within the next year unless you do something about it.  So let's get working on a way to make sure he lives."

Interesting perspective.  I'd be interested to hear what you'd propose to do to make a dent.  Forgetting NRA pressure and 2nd amendment loyalists.  If it were up to you to make a difference, what would be your gameplan?

Gut reactions - I’d make both the manufacture and sales of new guns illegal, create a 2x original retail price buyback program, and impose a massive sin tax on ammo.

I’m with Rambling Wreck in that I’m fine a full ban on guns - I know it’s a very unpopular position but I’d be ok with it and just want them (politicians) to do something.

its not that people don't care - in fact, its actually a good thing to have school shootings if your'e anti-gun, it it great for your agenda. I don't mean that in a bad way so much as just being brutally honest

Look, you want to stop school shootings? post 1 guard at every entry with a capable weapon and school shootings would be reduced by 95% or more.

People don't want to do that, and so crazies go to there and shoot 'em up because why? Nobody is there to stop them, that's why.

But lets be really honest for a minute - people dying isn't a problem. We re ok with the abortion deaths, automobile deaths, overdose deaths from illegal drugs, overdose deaths from legal drugs, and other causes. Those could all be seriously reduced if society wanted it.

They don't. They like their drugs, their fast cars, their right to have a baby killed in the womb etc.

American's like their guns too. The negative of having 300 million guns in the USA and millions of people using them is that a few thousand will be used for harm when people go crazy. IN fact, the latest trend is using automobiles as weapons.

I'm all for common sense gun control - and we have it. Right now we do. I'm all for sensible automobile control and actually we don't have that right now - it could be MUCH better and we could save tens of thousands life lives, injuries and hundreds of million in auto damages every year.

1) I started the thread and didn’t relate it in any way to Trump. I don’t think Trump is the cause of school shootings or that he’s made them any worse.

2) There were gun control threads during the Obama administration too. He actually seemed to share in the frustration and it seems like he wanted to do something about it.

President Trump should be bashed about gun violence. His endorsement of the most extreme positions of the NRA is shameful. It’s obviously not fair to blame Trump for the actual violence,  it’s perfectly legitimate to criticize his lack of effort to prevent it.

You’re just dead wrong on this. If that was the point I would have also looked at 2017. I didn’t, and I actually have no clue whether gun violence is up, down, or sideways under Trump as opposed to Obama. It was far too high then and it’s far too high now.

By blaming myself and everyone else I was actually trying to strip away partisan excuses and finger pointing.

I'll call this comment what it is - you completely missing the point. A sizable part of the country has been fed up with the lack of any real attempt to curb gun violence for a long time. The majority of Americans are for tighter regulations by a significant margin, yet nothing gets done. It isn't about Trump, even though he's doing absolutely nothing to address it. And we don't need a thread on gun violence to make that guy look bad - he does it on his own every f###ing day.

This thread is about everyone who just shakes their head whenever there is a mass shooting and says something like "What a tragedy" or "That's so sad", and then goes about their day like nothing happened.  It's about acceptance and an unwillingness to act.  Kudos to the OP.

So lets call this thread what it is - another attempted slight to President Trump to try and make him look bad.

What a very republican way to look at it! School shootings advance my agenda so I’ll sit on my hands.

Post an armed guard at the entrance of the school- is there only 1 door? Where will the money come from to pay for it? What does this person do, pat down every student? If not how does this stop anyone? I guess with education reform when I’m using my school voucher, I’ll be sure to pick the school that spends the most on guards.

Forget about trump- republicans have made lax gun control a part of their platform for years. Guns=votes. Shooting in Vegas, Republican candidate decides now is a good time to give away a rifle at a rally while talking about how the left is coming for your guns. Another shooting, they say we need more people with guns out there. I for one think that more guns in the public will mean more gun fatalities but I guess if theyre shooting the bad guys then it’s ok.  I’m a good guy, but I don’t want to carry a gun around. Not only because i don’t want to have something that deadly on my person but I already have keys, wallet, cellphone, where would I put a gun? Surprised they aren’t giving a tax break if you have your ccp.

Well we have comments like this:

"Meanwhile, the Tweeter in Chief is fanning the flames of a moronic conspiracy and paying no attention to Americans dying.

#MAGA "

Meanwhile 110 percent of the stories from the last year are about Trump-hating.   The excessive obsession with hating Trump is out of control and is unhealthy to them and their cause.

But but but...this is how you treated Obama!  And I don't mean that in the way you think.  See my whataboutism is honest.  This is how you treated Obama for 8 years.  There was a literally a meeting where it was decided to oppose everything he tried to do.  Then the Muslim crap started.  Then the birther BS.  And on and on culminating in the coup of the Supreme Court.

And it worked wonderfully.  I don't understand why the left wouldn't follow that playbook. It's brilliant.  Don't do anything.  Obstruct everything.  And then complain constantly for years.  It'll work.  Just watch.  The pendulum is going to swing back hard to the left at some point (probably when the stock market inevitably swings back) and we will start the cycle over again.

This is just how it's going to go until it doesn't work anymore.  So don't be a little baby about it.  Just let it wash over you like an orange creamsicle.

Sooo, so far we have a couple people saying ban all guns, a couple saying arm security guards at schools and that's about it.  I don't how a ban would work, honestly.  There are so many guns in this country and even if you implemented a buy back program (not sure how you'd pay for something on that massive a scale) my guess is a majority of gun owners would not comply anyways.

Any other thoughts that would curb this issue?

Randall and others have mentioned some.  Ultimately this is one of the fundamental problems on gun control.  For every possible law or policy that people suggest that could help there’s someone on the other side who says “that won’t do any good” or “I don’t see how that helps” and then nothing gets done.  How about we start with simple things like gun registries and bump stocks?  How about going much further and banning all automatic and semi-automatic guns?

Ultimately, this is Randall’s point if we just sit here doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING then we must not really care.

Just a note that I’m not directing any of this specifically to you just replying to your comment - I have not clue what your ideas are.
