Are you going to run this then @Mr. Ected? I'm assuming you are, which is fine with me.

I think this is what we're looking at for categories - I took out best song for now, split the instrumental/soundtrack category, added the best makeup, best art direction cats discussed last night. I put in documentary in place of the generic best band. This is 20 categories that tie in well with the real life Oscar categories, which is why I've left out the best keyboard solo type stuff for now.

  • Best Actor - best male lead vocal
  • Best Actress - best female lead vocal
  • Best Supporting Actor - best male vocal on a song that is not primarily credited to them
  • Best Supporting Actress - best female vocal on a song not primarily credited to them
  • Best Picture - Best Album
  • Best Foreign Film - best non-English song
  • Best Screenplay- best lyrics
  • Best Adapted Screenplay - best cover song
  • Best Special Effects - Best Use of Sampling
  • Best Cinematography - Best Music Video
  • Best Art Direction - Best Packaging/Artwork
  • Best Original Song - Best song featured in a movie/sountrack
  • Best Original Score - Best instrumental song
  • Best Editing - Best Produced song
  • Best Documentary - Best Song based on specific real-life persons, places, or events
  • Best Makeup - Song outside the artist's usual comfort zone
  • Best Short Film - Best Song <2 mins
  • Best Animation - Best Upbeat Fun Song
  • The Cecile B Demille - Song by greatest living artist
  • In Memoriam- Great song by artist that died in the last 12 months
@krista4  @Ilov80s @KarmaPolice  - do these look good based on last night's discussion?

Documentary?
Best song about a real-life topic/incident? "Real-life topic" gets a little hairy, though -- drug use and sex are "real life" topics. Maybe it should be "Best song about a real-life person or real-life newsworthy event"?

Best Guitar Part
Best Non-Guitar, Non-Keyboard Solo
Best Use of Horns
Best Harmonies
These might be akin to the various Technical Oscars, which are given for non-categorical achievements.

I mixed this list with the one that I had above.

I don't mind running it, as I said I have the time. I don't mean to 'steal' it, just that I can do the nuts and bolts.

Joe stopped paying attention again months ago.

No, I meant that "real-life topic" was too general of a category description. Anything can be a real-life topic. For documentary songs, the description would have to be narrowed down to something like "songs about specific persons, places, or events". There are many interesting choices.

Meant to type:

Yeah, I'll be in. I have a bit of hesitation, because I've had difficulty finishing out the Genrepalooza drafts.

I'm in. I like this list better than yours though ;) .

While playing around with the spreadsheet, I have a couple questions about the categories.

  • What do we mean by 'Best Produced Song?'
  • With 'Best Upbeat Fun Song' in the Animation Category, are we including funny?
  • I changed In Memorium to 2017.
  • For the Supporting Categories, we are talking about a vocalist on a song of another artist, like Song X (ft Joe), by Fred? Or even if it is just on Fred's Album, right?
As usual I am overthinking!

I'm thinking that they are all all-time, with the exception of the 'In Memorium' That is within the last 12 months. Or should we go 2017 for that?

Are you in?
17 simplifies it which is cool with me. And my idea was all time for every other category. Only other limitation would be Cecil B has to be a living artist.

For any award where the artist is being taken (Best Actor, Demille, etc) they can't be taken for that category again. Do we want to allow the same artist to be chosen  across multiple categories?

I'm not sure about best produced, I think maybe @krista4 thought of that. What came to my mind was in relation to hip-hop and the beat making process, but also there's some pretty famous producers that really enhanced the band (that other Beatle for example).

For supporting I did envision it as a guest spot on another artist/bands song.

Upbeat could be funny, sure

So I can't just pick a Rush song for each of the categories? Except the In Memorium, of course. ;)

There's a wonderful brewery in Marshall Michigan called Dark Horse. The brewers are total metal heads and punk rockers, they host lots of concerts there and have a fantastic jukebox. They have a big sign that says "Under no circumstances shall you play AC/DC. Please do not play AC/DC. No seriously, don't ####### play a single AC/DC song ever." I would love to hang that sign in here but substitute Rush for AC/DC.

Fly By Night is a cool song. Under no circumstances should any place that bans AC/DC be taken seriously.

Ever.

Ever.

There are a couple categories that you could squeeze a Rush song in.  :pickle:   In no way would I go for best vocal! :P

I like AC/DC. I'm not sure what their angle is- I don't think it's irony though. The place is great though- a punk/metal/skater beer paradise in the middle of a Bible Belt town.

Are these songs that were actually used in movies that were nominated for Oscars, or is this just Oscar themed catagories from albums that weren't actually nominated for Oscars?

Does this have anything at all to do with the movies?
In general, no they don't have anything to do with the movies, with the exception of the Soundtrack Category. We are just using an Oscar-like theme for the categories.

Just themed categories as a jumping off point for a new/unique draft basically.
