90s Movie Poll - 1999 The countdown has started! (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
I will be honest - I have been wanting to do a straight up stealing of Northern Voice's album poll and apply it to movies of the year.  The problem is, a lot of the major award winners aren't released for wide consumption until after the Academy and I am guessing it takes people awhile to get around to them.

However, I thought I would try the idea for the 90s and see if there is any interest.  Why the 90s?  A few reasons.  I am guessing that a good majority of the people that are on here a lot were in HS and college in the 90s and that is probably a sweet spot for a lot of us having the time to watch a ton of stuff.  Also, I have done my top 100 movies of the 00s and top 50 of the first 1/2 of the decade so there have been threads on those years.  MoP (I think) was doing the 80s, but nobody ever got around to the 90s.

Here is what we will do.... (again, straight up stolen from NV, but I don't think he will mind).

1.  PM me a list (or you can post here in spoiler tags, but PM is preferred)

2.  You must list a minimum of 10 movies, and a maximum of 20.

3. You have 200 points to distribute to your list.

4.  Maximum points a movie can get is 30.

5.  You can also simply post your top 10-20 movies in order and they will be awarded points in a descending order from 19-1.

6.  We are only doing movies that have a  theater release in 1999.

7.  NO PORN! , but other than that, there are no genre restrictions - comedy, horror, documentary, foreign, etc..

EXAMPLE 1 - Points Assigned:

Titanic - 30
Austin Powers - 30
The Shining - 25
Happy Gilmore - 20
Halloween 2 - 15
Death to Smoochy- 10
Cabin in the Woods - 10
Arrival - 10
Goodfellas - 10
Godfather - 10
Chinatown - 5
The Thing - 5
Blue Velvet - 5
King of Kong - 5
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - 5
Animal House - 1
Texas Chainsaw Massacre- 1
The Matrix - 1

They Live - 1

   I think there are going to be some polarizing movies from this year looking at your list and mine.

Also, I will not start to add up the points until middle of next week probably, so if people have changes to their list feel free to resend or let me know the tweaking of the points.

I can look at the list of movies for the year and see which ones I like and know which ones are my favorites, but it's difficult to rank movies that I haven't seen in a long while.

If you don't remember them well enough, they don't belong on your "best of" list.

You and I just have different tastes so I could link any of your movie threads.  Just a playful jab KP.
Just jabbing back.  I figured it was going to my PTA fanboy tendencies.   You gonna submit a list for this to offset my tastes?

(did I forget to mention that my list counts for 10x a regular list? ;)

If I have time.  Reall busy with work and basketball atm.  For clarification...is it a single list for the decade or a separate one for each year?  Albums = soundtracks only?

This is just movies, and we are just doing our lists for the year 1999.  If this goes fairly well, I will do other threads and continue going backwards through the decade.

Any mention of albums in the rules in the OP is just due to a really ####ty job of copy and paste last night from NV's end of the year album thread.

4 lists so far - keep 'em coming!

Not sure how often it will come up, but I am guessing there might be one or two movies that might be confusing as far as release dates.

I will use the example because I don't see it being hugely popular anyway - I believe The Virgin Suicides was shown at a festival or two in 1999, but didn't come out for wide release until 2000, so that probably doesn't count for these lists.

This isn't a perfect system and I am guessing that we might have issues here or there, but I guess just look at wiki and go from there if a question like that comes up.  I am guessing 98.5% of the titles won't have an issue.

Your number 8 was released in 1998, yes?

Oh, and don't you have to assign points to each movie?

I admit my top two, and especially one, might not have made it into mass viewing... but both were amazing for me that year.  but I thought most of the rest were pretty common and heavily viewed?

dot also. Am perusing the list of that year's releases now.  I already know my number one and two, the rest is all rank ordering.

Well, if we are being consistent with wiki and imdb, that means that The Virgin Suicides is 1999, so scratch my post on page 1 about that.

Also a reminder about the lists and the rules:

1.  Max points for a movie is 30pts.

2.  Max points/list is 200pts.

3.  You must have a minimum of 10 movies, maximum of 20 movies.

I am going to try my best to not look at lists now until I get my list more solidified.  Don't want to be subconsciously tweaking my list based on what I am seeing coming in.

@El Floppo - what jacked up site are you looking at for your list? ;)

I just got home and took a longer look at your list.  Besides Lock, Stock I show your #1 as 1998, and your 12 and 13 picks as 1997.

Nice game KP - I'm in ...is the deadline March 11th??  If so, seems long.
Honestly, I am starting to second guess that much time.   At first I figured it would take a bit to get people interested, that's why I thought 2 weeks would be fair.  However,  I already have 13 lists if I include mine.   For this draft we will keep the date, but for future ones I might just do a week if people like that better.  I know people like Shuke hinted at doing it over the weekend, and it might take me a few days to double check lists for errors and stuff like that.

Wait are we supposed to send you our own ranked list or a guess as to how the totals will be tallied/averaged?
