sticking with my hard 10 rule, but it's gonna be a ##### leaving some of these classics off - lovelovelove this year

?

I've only seen 3 movies from 74, and I'm sure I won't be able to see enough to fill out a complete list. I thought I'd use the extra time to bone up on the next year. Do we know what the next year is going to be?

I have not gotten around to digging too deep to see if there are any movies that might be showing up on lists, but might not qualify for 1974 according to the rules.  Basically the ones we have run into problems with are anything made outside the US - so double check them.  That includes UK and Canadian movies, not just foreign language movies.

Gotcha.  I am going to see how 1974 treats us, since this might be one of the deeper years in the 70s.  If it seems like we are getting fewer lists and people are in your camp where they have only seen a couple, I am considering allowing shorter lists for the other 70s years (or I guess any year people aren't comfortable with).  We could do a 100pt max with a 5 movie minimum list in the future if need be.

And yes, I will post the next year shortly.

For those working ahead a bit, after we dip into the 70s we will be travelling way back in time to a whole 8 years ago and doing the year 2010.   It's actually a year I like quite a bit, and I have a pile of about 8 movies I haven't seen sitting by the TV ready to be fired up as well.

Such a good year for movies.  You have three of the "better" more classic 70's disaster porn movies in Earthquake, Airport 75 and the Towering Inferno.  You have comedy classics like Blazing Saddles, the Longest Yard and Young Frankenstein.  Some of the best drama has to offer in Godfather II, Chinatown and Murder on the Orient Express.  And even horror makes an appearance with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I wonder if Art Carney's "Harry and Tonto" gets any love here from anyone.  That movie is like the holy grail for the cat meme universe.

Not to get too far ahead, but I did have most of the foreign movies I initially wrote down for 2010 come up as a 2009 movie.   I will post those in that thread, but folks like @krista4 should be warned.  I think the main 4 I was excited about got crossed off, but it gave me a couple new ones to watch.

Just checked a quick list of that year.  Holy moly were there a lot of movies that year.  I have a feeling that when we get to that, one of my top movies is going to make people think I'm drunk, or their drunk, or someone stole my keyboard.

The bolded is where you lose me and my initial lists take a hit.

Along with TCM the horror genre got another quality entry with Black Christmas.

What I was hinting at in the other thread, is that I think most expect Godfather II to walk away with this, but I could see Chinatown and The Conversation taking votes from each other and battling for 2/3.

You loved the Jaden Smith Karate Kid that much?

Even if you don't like them, those movies are always referenced on all time comedy lists.  But they are acquired tastes, I would agree.

I do fully expect Godfather II to win this.  It's my second favorite all time movie.  And it's probably the best sequel ever made, with Empire and Khan right behind it.  Many in the industry started years ago writing that it is actually better than the first Godfather which shows how it is revered.

Chinatown should be high too.  Not sure that the Conversation will be top 3 though.  There is a lot of talent out here to spread the dollars around.

Have only seen about 10 of the movies on this list so I'm in trouble.

I have to know:

I can understand Chinatown, Conversation and Godfather being "lumped together" as the great drama's of the year.  As I said prior I was curious to see where Harry and Tonto fell because it's an interesting movie for this group. (Wouldn't be surprised if wikkid loved it and named his pet vegan Iguana Tonto) But TCM atop all of them?

Is it that you are a horror/slasher movie lover?  Or did you truly find it to be just a better movie than the 4 under it?

no horror/slasher lover at all - quite the contrary ... i mean, i can dig 'em in doses, but i am no aficionado

that being said ...

it's  a damn shame that Hooper's brilliance here is so ####### ridiculously overlooked because "HORROR!" - and, yeah, it is horror ... but it remains one of the most incredibly fleshed out stories of our lifetime - the vision, art direction, claustrophobia, camera angles, editing ... it's a masterpiece of incredible style and execution.

i will submit that it was the most uniquely crafted film of the year, if not the decade - genres be damned.

yeah, it has it's hooks in me - simply. superb.  it revolutionized niche film making, and it redefined the way i viewed "indie" cinema, so to speak.

:goodposting:

Chinatown might battle for #2, but I think it will be battling the comedies such as Blazing Saddles.  Am I the only one who finds The Conversation a bit overrated?  I probably am.  It will probably still get some lower-level points from me, but I actually even found it somewhat boring.

You're not alone. IIRC I found some of the critical actions done by the characters to be contrived and/or out of character. I thought it was just okay.

I guess I might be wrong on that one, and The Conversation might be the Tootsie of this draft for me and my surprise that it's not higher.

I will agree on the claustrophobia and camera angles.  Not to annoy krista anymore than I already have today, but you can see a documentary feel to the production.  I didn't love it as much, but I respect the hell out of it.

I must admit, 1974 is a bit before my time for movies.  Having said that, rule #7 clearly states no pron.  So what's up with "The Lords of the Flatbush", "Flesh Gordon", "The Groove Tube", and "Female Trouble?"  I'd even question "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore", "A Woman Under the Influence", and "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" as questionable titles, having never seen them.

is this paddington? We're talking R-rated here.

A Woman Under The Influence is a drama about a woman having a nervous breakdown. I haven't seen it, but I've read that Gena Rowlands well deserved the academy award for best actress nomination she got for the role.

Ellen Burstyn actually won the academy award for best actress for 1974 for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore - a dramedy. The T.V. show Alice was basically a spin off/continuation of this movie.

There's a movie called The Conversation (from 1974) which I stumbled up on a few years ago.  I had never heard of it before, it has Gene Hackman in it and despite that (I'm kidding. . . mostly) it's a very good movie, you should give it a tumble.
