WR James Washington, NO Saints (1 Viewer)

James Washington (shoulder) is expected to play Week 8 against the Dolphins.

Washington practiced in full all week long. The matchup couldn't get better, but Washington has been a third- or fourth-read on most Mason Rudolph dropbacks despite their perceived chemistry stemming back to college. Washington has a career 42.4% catch rate as a boom-or-bust deep threat.

James Washington caught 4-of-4 targets for 69 yards in the Steelers' Week 9 win over the Colts.

Washington’s first catch was in tight coverage and required some solid body control to complete the process, while his second was an acrobatic one-handed snag on a slant thrown behind him. Later he picked up 40 yards on a downfield bomb that Washington managed to adjust to before the defender. The 69 receiving yards were the most Washington has gained in 20 career games. Still, it'll be tough to expect consistent fantasy production as long as he works well behind each of JuJu Smith-Schuster (five targets) and Jaylen Samuels (13). Treat Washington as a boom-or-bust WR5 ahead of next week's tough spot against the Rams.

James Washington caught 6-of-7 targets for 90 yards and one touchdown in the Steelers' Week 10 win over the Rams.

Washington led the Steelers in all receiving categories, including targets. The second-year receiver started the game with a red zone touchdown on a jump ball in the corner of the end zone and then busted off 34-yard run later in the game. Unfortunately, Washington had a fumble while running after the catch, but it was otherwise a nice game for the up-and-down receiver. Washington will continue to be a boom-or-bust WR5 with the Steelers offense among the league's worst with Mason Rudolph under center.

James Washington caught 3-of-4 targets for 49 yards in the Steelers' Week 11 loss to the Browns.

Washington also drew a 33-yard DPI on the Steelers' second drive. Denzel Ward did interfere, but Washington's awful ball skills actually worked to his favor on the play, tangling the two up more than they otherwise would have been. The 49 yards were a disappointment on a night where JuJu Smith-Schuster and Diontae Johnson were both knocked out with concussions. Their health will determine where Washington is ranked for next week's mouthwatering matchup with the Bengals.

James Washington caught 3-of-7 targets for 98 yards and one touchdown in the Steelers' Week 12 win over the Bengals.

Washington's seven targets led the team on a day the Steelers threw it just 27 times. Mason Rudolph was benched after one second-half possession, and Devlin Hodges came right in and hit Washington for a 79-yard touchdown on his second pass. Steelers wideouts are hard to trust in this broken offense, but Washington has been far more involved over the past month. He's a fine WR4 as an injury fill-in, but the bye weeks are over starting in Week 13.

James Washington hauled in all four of his targets for 111 yards and one score in Pittsburgh's Week 13 comeback win over the Browns.

It was the second-year wideout's first career 100-yard game and quietly his third touchdown in his last four. Washington didn't see a single target on Pittsburgh's first two drives but sealed a 31-yard catch over Greedy Williams during their third possession then tied the game heading into the half with a 30-yard touchdown while being dragged to the ground. He also led the team with 100 air yards as 'Duck' Hodges blindly trusted his receivers downfield, breathing life into a previously anemic passing attack. Washington's now averaged 5.5 targets in his last six games, entrenching himself as a strong WR4 against the Cardinals in Week 14 if JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee) remains sidelined.

James Washington caught 5-of-10 targets for 83 yards in Week 15 against Buffalo.

Washington was targeted on the first of Devlin Hodges’s four interceptions. His highlight was a 34-yard reception to set up the Steelers’ first score. Washington still managed to lead the Steelers in receiving despite an horrific game from Hodges and now has fives catches of at least 30 yards in the past four games. Washington will be a boom-or-bust WR3 for a matchup with the Jets in Week 16.

I like Dionte Johnson more going forward for Pitt WR opposite JuJu
What he said, way back in October 2019. I really think this isn't as much one versus the other but that the Steelers should use a 3WR set.

IMO Washington has always been a WR that works n works to get open. He's different, more slot type WR.

I think the Steelers, and maybe their fans, have been spoiled by Juju and Antonio able to do anything and everything well including a role for a play. If we put Diontae or Washington on another team, this would be obvious.

Ben needs to go back to being wise and the OC needs to call plays to let him be that. Ya gotta burn some short ones, run it some and establish the short game to pull off the deep passes Ben loves. That's when Ben and the Steelers look best and it's been a while since I've seen greatness from Ben.

Like every team that he leaves, the Steelers were OMG where's Munchak? last year. As long as their line settles down (and it should) then they have a real good chance to be far improved in 2020.

Steelers activated WR James Washington from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Washington was on the team's COVID list for less than a week. He's still expected to compete with rookie Chase Claypool (and, to a lesser extent, Diontae Johnson) as the No. 4 receiver. The 24-year-old remains a sneaky Best-Ball selection after he averaged a team-high 84.4 air yards per game as Pittsburgh's unanimous downfield threat last year.

The Athletic's Mark Kaboly said WR James Washington's skill set is "invaluable" to the Pittsburgh offense, as he makes big plays in camp.

Kaboly conceded he doesn't know how Washington might fit into the Steelers' passing offense, but noted Washington "has better speed" than teammate JuJu Smith Schuster "and can make those catches downfield." Washington averaged a team-high 84.4 air yards per game last year in a horrendous Steelers offense. He's not being drafted in 12-team fantasy leagues, while Johnson is going in the eighth round.

James Washington caught 2-of-3 targets for 34 yards and one touchdown in the Steelers' Week 1 win over the Giants.

Washington caught a short crosser at the 10-yard line and plowed through a couple defenders at the goal line for a 13-yard score right at the end of the second quarter to put the Steelers up 16-10 at the break. Washington's three targets were a deep fourth on the team. Sharing time with rookie Chase Claypool behind JuJu Smith-Schuster and Diontae Johnson, Washington is merely a big-play threat who will have some outlier box scores, but they will be impossible to predict along the way. The Steelers get the Broncos in Week 2.

James Washington caught 2-of-4 targets for 80 yards in the Steelers' Week 13 loss to Washington.

Washington took a 50-yard score to the house to put the Steelers up by two touchdowns but that deficit obviously didn't last as the Steelers ultimately suffered their first loss of the season on Monday Washington only logged a 7.5 percent target share. He remains more of a hindrance to Chase Claypool than a relevant fantasy factor on his own.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Steelers WR James Washington has demanded a trade.

The 2018 second round draft pick "requested a trade based on his limited playtime last season and so far this preseason," per Schefter. Washington, 25, has no path to consistent playing time as long as Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool, and JuJu Smith-Schuster are healthy. Washington on Thursday night against Dallas went catchless on two targets. His trade request comes hours after Dez Bryant advocated for Washington on Twitter, saying, "If you are a team and want a top tier WR trade for James Washington….. thank me later." Don't expect the Steelers to let go of Washington this summer: Scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, he provides valuable wideout depth for Pittsburgh as a deep ball specialist. Washington would be interesting for fantasy purposes if he lands on a team thin at wide receiver.

James Washington caught 4-of-5 targets for 69 yards in the Steelers' Week 4 loss to the Packers.

With Chase Claypool (hamstring) out, Washington again got run in three-wide sets for the second straight week after filling in for Diontae Johnson (knee) in Week 3. Washington's five targets were fourth on the team, but he was efficient with them and finished second with the 69 yards. Washington has turned 10 targets into 6-99 the last two weeks. He's not a recommended fantasy option in this broken offense.

Still sitting on the waiver wire in several of my leagues.  I don't really have a desire to pick him up either.

James Washington caught 4-of-6 targets for 65 yards and a touchdown in Pittsburgh's Week 14 loss to Minnesota.

Washington mostly saw his elevated snap shares in relief of a benched Chase Claypool, but produced admirably in the circumstances. His touchdown was a pinpoint pass by Ben Roethlisberger between a corner and a safety on a post route that required a great contested catch. Washington will likely remain on the outs for fantasy purposes as long as Claypool and Diontae Johnson are healthy, but he's shown that he can be reliable when called upon.

Cowboys signed WR James Washington to a one-year contract.

Washington returns to his home state of Texas where he played in high school. The 2018 second-rounder and former Biletnikoff winner was buried on the depth chart during his Steelers tenure, starting 25 games and averaging under 50 targets in three-of-four seasons. With Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson gone and Michael Gallup coming off knee surgery, the Cowboys offer a clearer path to targets for Washington, who turns 26 next month. Washington ran 33% of his routes in the slot last year, where he projects for snaps in Dallas, and will compete to start opposite CeeDee Lamb if Gallup isn't ready for Week 1.

Pro Football Network's Mike Kaye believes James Washington will "shine" in the Cowboys offense.

Washington projects as a Week 1 starter if Michael Gallup (ACL) can't get back for the season's start. He's struggling with a foot injury that kept him sidelined for Dallas OTAs but is expected to be ready for the team's minicamp and training camp. Washington, 26, was rarely used by the Steelers, but often made the most of his rare opportunities. In six games where Washington saw at least seven targets, he averaged 4.83 receptions, 69.5 yards, and 0.5 touchdowns per game. His potential to carve out a spot as the team's WR2 or WR3 with Amari Cooper dispatched to Cleveland makes Washington a sensible late-round target in redraft formats.

That is very true. He was a throw in a trade I did over 2 months ago when I gave Jeudy up for Etienne and Washington. Hard to beat Washington as my #9 WR.
I would rather roster a RB dart throw.  If it doesn't work out then nothing lost.  One thing people fail to take into account is that when another team is rostering someone like Washington it is a win for other teams.  Roster spots have value.

Here is my roster, 12 team league, I think I'm doing okay. ;)

Mahomes, Mac Jones, Daniel Jones

Chubb, Dobbins, Etienne, Akers, Pollard, Henderson, Edmonds

Hill, Hopkins, McLaurin, Evans, Dotson, Peirce, Hardman, Peoples-Jones, Washington

Kelce, Engram, McBride

Well, unless he turns out to be a useful asset then that’s not a waste of a roster spot.

How many 26 year olds with one of four healthy seasons > 400 yards become useful?
Not many. Stats aren't on his side at all. But he got caught in Steelers' numbers at WR and a declining Roethlisberger. There's a real chance he does hit the five-year breakout that sometimes comes into play with these guys that get out of their first first contract with a particular team. There's also a real chance he doesn't come close to breaking out and is James Washington, good NFL player, bad fantasy asset.

Even if the situation breaks well he doesn't have the skill set to be > a role player. It's a high point per play role, but volume will suppress the top end of his range of potential outcomes. Unless your league starts 6 or so wr I think those types are roster cloggers.

Yeah, there are big leagues where he might be useful if things break right. My league is one of those leagues unless you're flush at RB or TE, which only about six teams are. We start 4/5 WRs on the reg.

I’m not sure and not willing to do the research but he went from being buried behind very good WRs in Pitt and with a QB that couldn’t throw deep to starting the season as the No. 2 WR in a very good to great passing attack. I always thought he looked good when used in Pitt - obviously it’s far from a lock but your numbers ignore a lot of factors.

Oh, there's always more to any good analysis beyond just the raw numbers, but there is literally nothing else to grasp onto with Washington beyond situation. He came into the league as a threatening deep target that tracks the ball real well, but was lacking in all other areas. He's not tangibly different today than he was then. Had he done so then there was a place for him in the horizontal Pittsburgh offense, but he quite simply didn't develop. This is why when opportunity arose the Steelers opted to get Ray-Ray McCloud of all people involved more instead of Washington. His one trick has a place in the NFL, but in our game? Not so much. That's why he got the same contract as Rashard Higgins, Laquon Treadwell, Demarcus Robinson, etc. He's not a #2 WR; he's a role player.

I was high on him as a prospect, but It's time to move on.

Ok

I don't see Washington as a deep threat. I remember him in college. He was more like Welker or Edelman or Landry or.....has this iddly great knack for getting open in the slot (or crossing) and teams would try to jump that so he'd make one turn and have a deep ball.

There's some credence to Pittsburgh's WR coach isn't as good as advertised. Aside from Diontae, everyone only flashes and that's really using your god given talent and not coaching. They've had quite the stable of potential gems the last ten years and one could also argue we overrated them and the WR coach made the best of it.

Landry Jones and Mason Rudolph were fine college QBs. Dobbs had this fire I loved and thought he'd be a great reliever in the NFL. Why are we so sure Pickett is going to be good and developed well?

It also reads like Ben was such a character that all his attention he needed could have gotten in the way of development.

Pittsburgh wins and I couldn't love their head coach any more than I do and their defensive staff as well.

Did I mention how many RBs we've seen since Bell? Najee seems to have shut that down by walking on and rocking from day one but think about between Bell and he.

The way these positions are all the same with questionable development, it makes me figure it's a system problem.

Washington has discussed getting all the attention then feeling forgotten and then all the attention.  That makes me pause too. Do they give backups enough reps?

Anywho, some have written that Washingont is going to play outside and supplant Gallup. Ummm no chance in H.

Gallup is a good player (overcoming injury) and the Boys really felt like CeeDee and him would benefit from Amari being gone. Not rude, just true.

The Boys have had a year where they had so many OL play due to injury (20?) but otherwise Dak has been so fortunate to play behind a solid OL that gives him time. They've taken some hits in free agency and the radio people are into this concept of quick passes that apparently they're incorporating this year.  Both Washington and the TE should benefit.

They've also liked a few decent slot WRs over the years like Wilson.

CeeDee is the star and the table is set for him but he's gonna get a lot of attention so they're planning.

Most people are not taking in that they were absolutely stacked at WR and now they're kind of typical for the NFL. Predict some common stats for everyone including Washington and if you're gonna go overboard let it be with the guy that had two almost three QBs look so good throwing to him that they won the Heisman.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember his calling card in college was his ball tracking on deep balls.

JohnnyU said:

It's one sets up the other.

I wasn't all that impressed with the deep game because the CBs jumped his route and he had it easy from that point of the play on. I felt like everyone praising his deep skill missed that.

He's great at boxing out and has some Welker to his game. Once he's had the slot over the middle catch; then he runs the same route but he's got a nice smooth fake to turn it deep.

On the senior bowl recap show they were talking of a corner lining up inside and how he took big strides to get open deep. Since when do CBs line up there? That has to be to take away the Welker ability so he toasted them deep.

He was really savvy.

Kendall Wright was half similar and had a real difficult time not having freedom in the NFL. He caught a few deep balls for the Titans and you couldn't miss the OC as the only one not cheering.

Wright would have had a chance to do this (if he was bigger and could block) in the Titans 2 and 3 TE set but he'd always play with too many targets on the field where if he adlibs/reads the defender then he's probably getting in someone else's space.

I must have seen Washington near the Steelers TE forty times. There's no way their offense was scripted to have their routes end in the same place.

If what's his name is out to start the season, the Cowboys should be able to let him play outside and give him some freedom but it reverts back to can he block for the run game or do they want a bigger WR there?

@squistion - I am requesting a thread title update on this one

Saints signed WR James Washington, formerly of the Cowboys, to a one-year contract.

Washington spent the majority of last season with the Cowboys, battling a foot injury he suffered in the preseason before returning to the field for two games while failing to register a catch. The former second-round pick served as a deep threat for the Steelers early in his career and appeared to be on the verge of a breakout in 2020 after going for 44-735-3 in his second season. After a lost 2022, Washington now has a chance to earn a role as a deep threat for the Saints, but unlikely to be anything more than added depth at this point.
