Knees sore a week after playing basketball. Wtf (1 Viewer)

Otis

Is this what happens when we get older?  I’ve been lifting weights regularly for a year including stuff like squats and leg press. Haven’t played basketball in years, and played for a few hours last weekend.  Almost a week later and my knees are still sore. Like, it’s a total chore going up and down stairs. Wtf?

Is this what I have to look forward to as I move deeper into my 40s?  Just random aching from physical activities that used to cause no issue at all?

What kinds of surprises await in my 50s and beyond?

TIA for all advice from old guys; won’t answer yours.

Early 40s?  Think Karen Carpenter here: you've only just begun. By the time you hit the mid 60s, you're surprised when you wake up in the morning and nothing hurts...and you're even more surprised if that's true when you go to bed that night. And that's from a guy who considers himself to be in pretty good shape for his age.

Ugh.

Yes.

Just in the last six months I realized I now have tinnitus and adhesive capsulitis of shoulder.   yay!

Yes. Duh.

I suppose it would help if I’d have had like 20 less lbs to trot around out there.
See above.

What I have gleaned from my 46 years of once very active, slowly morphing into less and less active is that gym muscles help but unless you are super focused on doing different routines  there is no substitute for playing sports - you just end up working the same muscles and it's very easy to do the stuff you like to do. Playing sports you twist, bend, react, etc in ways you just don't do in a typical gym workout.

The catch-22 is that when you play sports you get dinged up which holds you back from playing.

And oh BTW this was half court. :bag:
Wait until you wake in the morning with a sleep injury, that's right, an injury you suffered in your sleep.  Yes sleep can become a strenuous activity.  Then, in the not too distant future you will find yourself waking for a five minute piss because your prostate is starting to go.  After, when you look into the mirror on your way back to fitful sleep you will notice your face has slid down about a half an inch and has some wrinkles.  As you recoil in horror from your father staring back at you out of the mirror do so carefully or you may pull something, I'm guessing your Achilles.

I've had hardened cartilage and tendinitis in my knees (early wear and tear, pounding and multiple sprains/ligament damage), a chronically sore neck (football related) and bad ankles since my late teens.  Bad back got me in my late twenties.... and this as a result of having been in exceptional shape when I was young (like 3% body fat into my twenties. a lot more since).

You are complaining because middle age has caught up with you? Welcome to the beginning of the end, gb. If you ain't used to waking up in some amount of pain everyday, no better time to learn than the present and forever future.

PS - You old guys are making me want to take up every dangerous hobby in the world.  Getting old sounds horrible!

Very much this.

I'm a physically fit 41yo if we consider heart health, body composition and strength. But I really need to do more lateral movements, play more sports, work more in the yard, those types of activities.

Otherwise pain in parts of the body I didn't even know existed will remain a constant companion.

Seriously, thinking of last weekend. I ran 13 miles at a sub 8 minute pace, did 4 minutes of planks, 150 pushups, then hurt myself playing catch with my 9yo.

start taking:   glucosamine, collagen and turmeric as supplements.
Glucosamine and Chondroitan combo works great for me.  Takes a couple of weeks and I do not get the sore creaky feelings.  Gotta be consistent in it or it goes right back.  46 yr old running dude here.

Another option is just good old fashioned hard work.  Spend a day digging stumps out of the yard, painting a garage, raking, hauling mulch, chopping wood, digging post-holes, weeding, walking the dog, etc. Get used to walking or riding a bike for short errands instead of driving.  At 50+ these lifestyle changes can make a ton of difference. My wife is a good example of this - she never sets foot in a gym, but pretty much doesn't sit down or stop moving from the time she wakes up until she goes to bed at night. She's in great shape and looks fantastic at 50.

Does child protective services know that you are throwing your 9 year old around?

sounds like arthritis - and yes, this is what happens when you get older - so I have learned at the age of 49 ;

Learn to "baby" what hurts, stretch, ice etc and continue to be active. Doesn't sound like you had done a lot of cardio, just lifting... then you go pound on your legs for four hours... surprised you did not pull something!

LOL-  Do that and see how it pays you back 10 fold when you hit your 50's

Oh and in addition before this I had to stop doing bench and shoulder press about a month ago because I have what culdeus diagnosed as pretty nasty impingement in both shoulders. So after almost a year of steady and nice heavy lifting and putting on some muscle, I have to stop all my “pushing exercises” for like 2 months until this gets better.

Hurts like hell every time I have to reach back to put on an coat.

Sigh.

Culdeus diagnosed me in one of the fat guy threads as having impingement. I read about it and it’s spot on. A long time wear injury supposedly common with heavy weight lifting. #### hurts. I can’t lift grocery bags out to the side, can only do so in front. Hurts to put on a jacket. Can’t do any pushing exercises anymore. Sucks. I just replace those exercises in my lifting routine with more pulling exercises.

Weird because it just kind of came out of nowhere. Wasn’t any particular injury or moment. Just started hurting.

Also I realized it’s not just my knees from basketball. It’s also my ankles and calves. Basically all of my leg muscles other than the main ones.

Wife told me I should start taking some of this collagen crap. Sounds like it makes sense.

In all reality Otis I think you should see a specialist. You said it was half court. I don't think it should hurt that bad for this long.

Go see a doc and start PT.  I’ve improved in just 3 to 4 weeks.   Couldn’t reach up to get stuff from the highest cupboard, sharp pains in my arm if I reached into the backseat of the car, hurt to put my belt on.

Who the F has time for physical therapy and specialists??  I’m lucky I can do the basic #### these days.

Seriously quit basketball before you do something serious like pop an Achilles.  I miss playing like crazy but it’s incredibly hard and your body and not a sport meant for old guys.  Unless you want to be the old guy in a head band who just sets screens all day and occassionally chucks up a jumper.
