Later reports are these are two real estate brokers who were waiting for a friend and were arrested for trespassing. They were subsequently released some hours later. We need more details on this but the information we have so far suggest the arrests were racially motivated.

Video of two Black men being arrested for sitting at Starbucks sparks calls for boycott

Starbucks has some explaining to do after video surfaced on social media showing Philadelphia police officers arresting two Black men.

According to social media accounts the two men were waiting in the Starbucks for a friend when a barista called the cops.

“What did they do,” one man can be heard saying in a video captured by Melissa DePino.

“They didn’t do anything, I saw the entire thing,” another person said.

Just as the friend of the two men arrived, the men were put in handcuffs and arrested by police.

Police have not said why they were arrested.

@Starbucks The police were called because these men hadn’t ordered anything. They were waiting for a friend to show up, who did as they were taken out in handcuffs for doing nothing. All the other white ppl are wondering why it’s never happened to us when we do the same thing.

In the video (at above link) confused white patrons appear to wonder why this type of thing never happens to them when they are in Starbucks. [...]

Starbucks posted a message on social media in response:

We’re reviewing the incident with our partners, law enforcement and customers to determine what took place and led to this unfortunate result.
According to CBS Philly, the Philadelphia Police Department says an internal investigation is underway following the arrest on thursday.

On friday, the police issued a statement.

“The entire incident, including the actions of the responding officers, is under internal investigation. Once we gather all the facts, we will comment further.”

Why does Starbucks have "some enplaning" to do? The person who called the police or the police maybe. I find it hard to believe Starbucks has a policy if 2 black men are setting in their store call the police..
Reportedly it was a barista who called the police.

Honestly, maybe they should be thankful they weren't shot.  Being black in America is obviously a crime.
This thread is a bit ridiculous but I saw this story and so I guess I will drop this here

Alleged story: Black teen missed school bus and walks to school. He takes what he thinks is a shortcut through a neighborhood and gets lost. He knocks at a door of a home to ask for directions, the owners assume he is trying to rob them and he is shot as he is running away from the home. Kid is ok though.

I can't boycott Starbucks because I don't go there to begin with. This incident is shameful for Starbucks and Philly police.

Did they buy anything? If I ever go Starbucks to use wifi or whatever I always at least buy a cup of coffee from them.

Ok?  Political why?

This is why many people bash you squis.

while an unfornate story...it’s hardly huge news nor is it political.
How can an arrest that may have been based on race (if indeed that was the reason) not be considered a political discussion? There was a thread last week about VT Women's Lacrosse Team singing the "N" word in a song - did you or anyone else in that thread complain that it wasn't political or  that it wasn't news worthy?

You know.....not EVERYTHING that happens in our world needs to be a thread here.

Meh...my first year of law school, two of my classmates were at hot dog shop across the street from the school around midnight.  One of them went outside the door while the other waited in line to pay.  A cop ordered him to "move along".  When he said, "I'm just waiting for my buddy," the cop again said, "Move along."  When he said, "He'll be out in a second," the cop slapped cuffs on him and took him to booking.  The other guy came out and had no idea where he had gone.  Both were white...it happens.

Man, that anecdote totally erases the constant negative racial profiling and discrimination that happens to people of color.

The video raises some questions, as obviously something weird happened here. We don’t see the part preceding the handcuffs, but onlookers were wondering aloud what the cuffed folks did to get arrested. (The consensus seems to be: nothing.)

One of the cops was black, for whatever that’s worth.

I’d say there is roughly zero chance that they were arrested without first disobeying a request from the barista to leave and then disobeying an order by the cops to leave.

The question is why they were (presumably) asked by Starbucks to leave. I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that it had to do with race before we hear from any of the people involved — the barista, the police, the arrestees.

If it did have to do with race, Starbucks will definitely have some explaining to do. (The explanation may be simply: Oops, we didn’t realize this barista was such a racist jerk when we hired him. And while I keep saying ‘barista’ here, we should probably assume it was a manager.)

I don’t know whether the cops could have done anything differently. If Starbucks wanted them to leave and they refused, that is trespassing and the cops need to enforce the law. If the reason they were asked to leave was possibly illegal (e.g., based on race), that seems like it’s probably something to sort out later, not a reason for the police to refuse escorting them off the premises in that moment.

Yaffe, founder and president of AY Industries, a real estate development, investment and management firm, called attorney Lauren Wimmer about the incident. “He was meeting with the two gentlemen at the Starbucks to discuss business,” Wimmer said Saturday, identifying Yaffe as a friend. “These two guys are business professionals in commercial real estate.”

Wimmer says the men were taken to 901 N. 21st St., the building sharred by Philadelphia Police Central Detectives and the Ninth Police Division, which covers part of Center City, and “arrested, fingerprinted and photographed” by police there around 5:30 p.m. Thursday. She said authorities were considering a charge of “defiant trespass.” Wimmer, representing both men pro bono, contacted authorities. She added, “I received a call at 12:30 a.m. (Friday) from the D.A.’s office that they were letting them go.” She would not disclose their identities.

They were released “because of lack of evidence” that a crime had been committed, said Benjamin Waxman, a spokesman for District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office. He declined further comment, noting the police have said they are investigating the incident. [...]

“Based on my discussion with witnesses,” a Starbucks manager “was the person who called 911,” Wimmer added. Also based on her interviews with eyewitnesses, Wimmer said she believed the reason for the address “was completely based on race. There was no indication any crime was being committed, and the video makes that clear.” She added that in her criminal defense practice she has received previous complaints of African Americans arrested at businesses and accused of trespassing who had not committed crimes.

In the short clip shared Thursday on Twitter by @MissyDePino, which shows the two being handcuffed and taken out of the coffee shop and a man, Yaffe, who says they had been waiting for him questioning why they are being detained, has since been retweeted more than 65,000 times. [...]

I’m a little latte to this thread.   I will say that the video piked my interest.  I think that Squis posted this because he needed to vente, not to brew up trouble.  One of the great things about being an Americano is being able to espresso your feelings.
It’s Grande importante.

Getting everyone to understand is a tall order.

When I saw the thread title I thought it might be those same two New Black Panther dudes who have been hanging out in front of polling booths since 2008 giving menacing looks. I was all, “oh so they’ve moved on to Starbucks now?” But I guess it’s not the same two guys.
