Post a picture of your first car (2 Viewers)

1969 Mustang

This car is identical to mine. Family bought it in 1974 (it was white then) when I was 5 years old for my mom to drive us all to school. It mostly just sat in the garage though. My parents gave it to me when I turned 15 and I pretty much poured every dime I earned into that car.

Screaming fast car with a built 351w. It was pretty close to show quality at one point.

44 years later it is still in my garage, but I have neglected it and it is not running right now. I have plans for it to be my retirement project here in five years or so.

Nice! Great car. I had my only accident in this car (knock on wood) rear ended a Civic at about 25 mph. Destroyed that poor Honda, towed away. My Volvo had a bit of a crinkle in the hood, the grill broke, and the bumper was a bit tilted.

Drove the car til about 200k miles. Gave to my little brother.
I only had mine for a short while.  My dad shockingly bequeathed his 1969 Mustang convertible to me.  Mine was red.  Only one of a few thousand that came with the 305 engine.

My first car was the wagon version of this. The back seat was always folded down, a staggering and unsupported act of confidence.

Two that qualify as my 'first' cars.

1985/6 Hyundai Excel GLS. We had a greyish one rather than this black, but same car. Since the base model of this car was soooo cheap (base was ~$5k.) My folks got a top end one for next to nothing. For 85, it was decked out, it had a nice cassette stereo, moonroof, and other top-end embelishments. As the teen driving it, the fact that you put your foot to the floor and a second or two later the hamsters under the hood got the car started moving was not that great, but now as a parent of a teen rapidly approaching driving, I see the value!

The first car that was my own was a sweet late 80s Nissan Sentra Coupe. Got it from a friend of my parents for next to nothing. It was manual transmission, and fun to drive. It had a nice stereo, and a pop-up moonroof. As a bachelor driving around DC, this was a perfect car.

'68 Camaro

Looked like this when I bought it in HS for $2500.  Ran great, had a 327 with 2-speed automatic.

Spent my evenings and weekends in high school working on the car and scrounging around junk yards and fixed it up to look exactly like this.  Swapped the automatic for a 4-speed manual too.  Was a super fun car, but when I moved from college it got stolen.

Was it one of these? :headbang:

'83 Cutlass Ciera Hand me down in '95. Like that one, but with a lot more rust, drooping headliner, no rearview mirror, and only one hubcap.

First car I bought was an '88 Mazda 323 Hatchback. In '96, when the Oldmobile was ready to croak. I'll never forget handing the dealer 18 $100 bills that I'd save up for that puppy. Loved that car. It was a stick shift, and I didn't know how to drive one at the time. I learned driving it off the lot.

Sad part is, I bought the Mazda in '96. It croaked in 2000. Being broke at the time, and no money to put down, I got a new car (72 months financing, oof). An '01 Toyota Echo. Terrible investment at the time, of course, but that Echo is still my daily driver.

Good thread.   Had friends that had lots of these, so it's taking me down memory lane.

Mine was an 88 Ford Ranger, bought new and handed down to me around 94, and had a godawful camper shell on the back which I removed, then once I amassed some summer job riches, added some new rims, speakers, window tint etc.

77 Pontiac Catalina with 301 v8

this is actually a picture of a Bonneville, but it’s dang near identical, and this is the exact color/top of the “Golden Canoe”.

was a birthday/Christmas/Graduation gift from my grandparents in 1989, when they went to an even larger car.....a Grand Marquis

I swear the inside  had veritable towel bars to help pull those massive doors shut.

1981 Datsun 210

Used in 1985/86. The company no longer exists.
I had one of these in college, except it was the fastback model. It was reliable and got great gas mileage, but was gutless and boring, and no girl would ever be caught dead in it. The only reason that I got the car is because my 16-year-old brother had borrowed my Chevy (which was really our dad's car) and proceeded to wreck it playing mailbox baseball. So my dad replaced it with an '81 Datsun, then he grounded my brother for 3 months, banned him from ever driving the Datsun, and told my brother that he had to wait a year before he could have a car of his own.

To this day, my brother holds a grudge against both my dad and me because he claims the punishment was "unfair". (He has a bit of a Trump complex.)

After my 1980 Cutlass Supreme died, my dad borrowed me the money to buy another car of my choice.  I loved the Cutlass so much, I just bought a newer version, a 1986.  This picture is exactly what it looked like down to the color.  Loved that car so much.  Speedometer went to 85, and I tried to max it out whenever possible.  Big plush bench seat in the front.  You can't find many two doors anymore that fit six comfortably.  I really wish I had the Hurst 442 version, but I probably wouldn't be alive today if I had any more speed/power.

I got my first car in late 1995. It was an 86 Mercedes 190 E.  I was a senior in high school and my parents said that they would match up to $2500 to contribute towards my car--which basically meant I had a budget of $5000 or less.  For months I searched the Auto Trader looking for a nice used car until I found an all black low mileage 190 E.  Mine wasn't the cosworth version--it was a base version that just looked like it. Mine looked very similar to the one pictured here but I had the windows tinted pretty dark.  This is a cool thread. Just thinking about the good times I had in that car brings up some fun memories.

1984 Chrysler Laser

Cost 3 racks back in 1988.  Ran over a fire hydrant with it my senior year of high school.  Bought a Chilton's manual and repaired it myself with parts I bought from a junk yard.  Then totaled it driving to my sophomore year of college.  Did a 180 during a downpour on the expressway and slammed into the concrete median doing around 70 mph.

I remember when I was 10 or so as the LAZAR was in design/pre-production my dad got some promotional material from Chrysler with a big slick brochure /pamphlet on the car. I thought it was about the coolest thing ever.

But as a barometer -- keep in mind I hadn't even hit puberty and also thought the Smurfs were pretty cool, also.

It was the poor cousin to the Dodge Daytona.  The cool rich kids had those.  I remember my auto shop teacher took us all to Milan Dragway one year.  I was pitted against a classmate with a Turbo Daytona.  I smoked him off the line, but sadly my trusty Laser just didn't have the horses to beat him.

No schtick... 1963 Mercury Comet (that's the right color/style too).

Inherited from my GREAT grandmother.  Classic little-old-lady car -- was driving it in mid-80s and it only had like 40k on it.

1965 Ford Galaxy 500

Grandmother's car passed to us when she died.  Hand me down from two older brothers before I got it.

When I got the courage to ask my dad for my own car, I was shocked that he agreed to help me buy my second car (in 1983):  1978 Pontiac Trans Am

I liked that better than the Ford.
Some dope, dope cars here. Probably just not retro enough at the time to be considered classics, though.

Dang, those are cool.

1983 Honda Accord LX hatchback in loser blue as everyone called it.  Pics
   loser blue, I knew what that was gonna be before I even clicked.

My dad bought this exact same piece of crap a few years ago to schlep himself around in a few times a week

My girlfriend drove a 1978 Plymouth Volare - sort of like this but baby blue.

It had a single front bench seat and would stall when it rains.

:lmao:

Wife and I bought our first car together in '85 as a married couple while stationed overseas.  1980 Fiat Panda putted around in that until we left in 1987 then bought a new '88 Ford Escort (like pictured above but the GT model) together when we got back state-side.

Don't you mean "Motor Trend Car of the Year" Plymouth Volare?

My grandfather had the same car. I remember reading through old car mags as a kid and seeing that it had won the award.  This did not give me much faith in the 70's auto industry.
