After a hiatus, we're bringing the Player Spotlight threads back to the Shark Pool. For those who are new around here, the Player Spotlights are a main feature of our preseason on the site. They're in-depth looks at key players, including pros and cons, and our staff projections. For years, we also included the best commentary from the Shark Pool. A few years ago, activity in the Pool died down and commentary waned. But, we have confidence in a resurgence.

So here's the deal. Discuss your thoughts about the player in question. We'll pick the best comments from the bunch and use them (and give you credit) in the published articles.

Mitchell Trubisky, QB, CHI

About a year ago, fantasy owners had left Jared Goff for dead after one of the worst rookie quarterback performances in recent memory. A new coaching staff and an offensive scheme designed to accentuate Goff’s strengths and hide weaknesses helped turn the offense around and make Goff a more than serviceable fantasy option. With similar changes happening in Chicago, can we expect the same kind of results with Mitch Trubisky? Is Mitch Trubisky the perfect late round quarterback to target, or are there better options?

It's possible he could have a good season similar to Goff last year.  Lots of questions but lots of potential.  He was very limited last year with the coaching staff they had but he did show off some of his skills.  He had very little talent to throw to last year but seems to have plenty of weapons around him this year.

There are certainly a lot of similar narratives between Trubisky and Goff. Trubisky looked a lot better than Goff as a rookie that's for sure. He had a solid rookie year in my opinion. How many QB's would do great with Kendall Wright and Tarik Cohen as their top-2 pass catchers. Adding Allen Robinson is huge, and Burton, Miller, and Gabriel offer far better secondary weapons.

That said, its very possible we are still a year away from a true blow up for Trubisky. Matt Nagy is a bit of an unknown, in the sense that its hard to know how much input he had in KC, Andy Reid has always had a big hand in the offense, and usually called his own plays. Those same questions were there for McVay last year, but I'd hardly look at him as the norm.

My projections: 3900-23-12 passing 200-1 rushing. Mid-tier QB2, in the Dak Prescott-Andy Dalton range.

Once you get to the back half of the QB2 ranks (at least in redraft), I suspect most owners will be happy to take a wait and see approach.

Trubisky was what most thought he’d be in 2017. An incredibly raw QB prospect that was hampered by a coaching situation that did him no favors.  While the Trubisky/Goff comparisons have some degree of alignment, if you’re going to d9 that comparison, then you also have to figure that Goff was available on most WW into October.  And that was a best case scenario that unfolded.
