Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Thread (2 Viewers)

Years ago when I identified as a republican, and a proud one at that, I HATED Hannity with a passion.  That guy has skeletons. I just know it.
I still can't take listening to him.  One note Johnny, and not a good note.

Unlike you, though, he doesn't seem a snake to me.  He is incredibly generous with his money and time.  He appears to be a pretty good guy - he came out completely clean when O'Reilly got booted and if there was stench there he would have gotten caught up in it.

What ever became of O'Reilly and Beck?  Are they on a highway off ramp in some major city holding up a cardboard sign reading "Will bloviate for food"?

The fact that Hannity hired Michael Cohen as a lawyer is pretty sketchy.

One beats women and the other asked a question on his radio show that I'm not even going to tiptoe around because the FBI wasn't amused.

My curiosity is peaked.  I may have to look this up tonight, from my home computer.  Surprised I missed the info here.  Usually this stuff is well covered and I pick up on it, but I missed this or ignored it as both or more or less outside my area of real interest.  Not unlike Hannity or Carlson.  I bet I have been exposed to each less than 5 minutes in total the last year and that is only because it takes me a moment to page through channels and I do not actually skip Fox in my preloads so when climbing up it is on for a second or two before I move forward.

I've always found Hannity to be unwatchable/unlistenable.  Granted I haven't a minute of his show in years so if he's gotten better I would have missed it.  But I doubt he's gotten better.
He’s gotten worse

Hint: Beck was extremely worried about Trump being elected.

Suddenly that video is everywhere.

My guess is that it’s some kind of troll.
It was.

LaRouche PAC, a far-right group that supports Donald Trump, has taken credit for trolling Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during a town hall meeting yesterday. An operative with LaRouche made headlines overnight after standing up at AOC’s town hall in Queens yesterday and saying that humanity should eat babies, among other ridiculous things, to address the climate crisis.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha so funny. Man, these republicans are hilarious. You have Dennis Miller, and Tim Allen, and Dennis Miller.

I mean are these morons wearing disguises when they do stuff like this.  Or are they that stupid that they don't think anymore does any research on someone that weird.    As soon as people know who they are they will realize it was a gotcha question.

This was an obvious troll from the very first second she started taking her jacket off.  And what a stupid idea.  Do they think, if it was true, people would blame AOC for it?  Plus, it actually made AOC seem more sweet and loving etc for jumping on people who made fun of the troll.

bad bad idea, poor execution, and as transparent as can be.

I agree that this stupid stunt was completely counterproductive.  All they did was make AOC look rational by comparison.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the U.S. needs to start a "conversation about whether to abolish prisons in the country" to disentangle itself from a history of "American apartheid."

"Mass incarceration is our American reality. It is a system whose logic evolved from the same lineage as Jim Crow, American apartheid, & slavery," the New York Democrat said Monday on Twitter. "To end it, we have to change. That means we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country."

That means we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country. https://t.co/9E9NTAmBNi

While I do agree with her that we have people in prison who do not belong in there.  Non-violent, mental illness, poor, or drug charges and such.  How is it a good idea to do away with prisons all together?  This is what bothers me about her, she says we need have to conversation, makes a claim, offers no solution or clarification and then goes on the defensive about how people are attacking her.

I guess she took too much heat for the concentration camp analogy last time, moving on to 'American apartheid'.

So what do we do with murderers? Rapists? Child Molesters?  Is she saying abolish privately run prisons?  Was she possibly misquoted?

I suspect that when she says “prison abolition” she means ALL prisons. Just a hunch though.

ETA- a quick google search shows I was right. She borrowed a phrase “prison abolition” from the international version of her movement, the Democratic Socialists, a little imprecisely- she then corrected and explained herself in subsequent tweets: she wants a reduction, not elimination of prisons.

AOC Tweets on Prisons

  • I know the term “prison abolition” is breaking some people’s brains. The right is already freaking out. Yet the US incarcerates more than anywhere in the world. We have more than enough room to close many of our prisons and explore just alternatives to incarceration.
  • First of all, many people in jailed or in prison don’t belong there at all. Whether it’s punitive sentencing for marijuana possession or jailing people for their poverty & letting the rich free through systems like cash bail, we wrongly incarcerate far, far too many people.
  • Secondly, our prison & jail system is so large bc we use them as de facto mental hospitals, homeless shelters, & detox centers instead of *actually* investing in... mental health, housing, edu, & rehab. If we invested meaningfully, what do you think would happen to crime?
  • Lastly, people tend to say “what do you do with all the violent people?” as a defense for incarcerating millions. Our lawmaking process means we come to solutions together, &either way we should work to an end where our prison system is dramatically smaller than it is today.

This is a thought I would seriously want her to unpack a little.  She certainly doesn't mean let violent offenders run amok...I am confident of that, so what the heck is she thinking here?

Trump and Cortez should work together.  Trump can buy Greenland and Cortez can ship all the violent prisoners there to live.

Part of “prison reduction” will have to include elimination of jobs for correctional officers. Did AOC mention a plan for how to make sure these people find their way to new employment opportunities?

Of course:

That bullet covers EVERYTHING

If this were to happen, no doubt she would support programs to help with job assistance and/or to retrain these folks.

While unfortunate, that doesn't seem like a sufficient reason to keep people imprisoned who should not be there.

I can't think of a progressive that wouldn't.

Oh, I agree.

And I think the Correctional Officers union will fight prison reduction tooth and nail unless there were some guarantee that their employees would be re-trained and offered new jobs with commensurate salary and benefits to what they have now.

I don't think government should guarantee something like that. But this is probably a hypothetical debate for another day.

Abolishing all private prisons would be a good start. There should not be a profit incentive to keep as many people incarcerated as long as possible.
There also shouldn't be gangs and rape in jail either and the government should be responsible for that crap
