Visiting Nashville - Things to do? (1 Viewer)

Fat Nick

Footballguy
So on Sunday my wife told me she was taking me on a surprise trip to Nashville for my 40th birthday.  We leave tomorrow and will be there Thurs-Sun.

She's already got a few items on the agenda that I know of, and a few that I don't...The ones I know are:

-A show at the Ryman Auditorium

-Brunch at a place called Pinewood Social

-Boot shopping (I want a new pair of cowboy boots)

Any locals or other frequent visitors have any recommendations?  We won't have a car and will rely on Uber and our feet for travel.

Thanks!

But the board was just upgraded....
...still has the same dumb time-out for search results that makes you wait to search again if your first search comes up with crap.  I have very little patience for waiting when my first search turned up tons of threads about Marcus Marriotta.  You'd think this was a football board or something.

Being a visitor, you may love downtown.  Growing up in the area, I stay far away. Tons of people everywhere.  Every restaurant or bar is overflowing with people. Could try The Gulch as well. Cool spot a few blocks from downtown. Nice restaurants and not as crowded.

Search for what you are looking for in "content titles only" usually has better results.

I'm not even into country music but enjoyed just having drinks in the clubs in town, listening to the hopeful play their tunes. Cool vibe there.

If you have a car, you can go to the jack Daniels distillery. It's in Lynchburg which is about 75 miles away. They have multiple tasting tours. Not too expensive. Worth a look.

Definitely walk around lower broadway Friday or Saturday night. Lots of little bars with live music you can hop in and out.

Country Music Hall of Fame if you're into that.

Pro sports are out...Predators and Titans both on road trips during you're visit. That might mean thinner crowds downtown...which could be good or bad depending on what you like.

If the weather's good I'd uber out to the Centennial Park & Parthenon. Nice park, interesting building, little art gallery inside, big ### statue of Athena.

Cheekwood is great for a few hours in nice weather.

We went to Nashville a couple years ago while one of my kids was at Space Camp near Otis in Huntsville, AL. He suggested Jack Daniels, great tour even if you have kids. The only issue is if you have under 21 kids, you will not be able to go on the sampling tours.  We ended up buying part of a barrel for my JD-loving mother for her to use as a planter. She adores it!

The CMHOF is a great tour even if you are a music fan, but not a huge CM fan.

Where are you from? You'll be hard pressed to find real cowboy boots in Nashville. That's a Texas thing.

The Ryman is a shrine. You'll love it. So much history.

If you like IPA beer, especially New England style, Bearded Iris is world class and a super rad place.

Arnolds is arguably Nashville's best Meat and 3 spot which means it's the best in the world. It's a little overrated but excellent.

Hot Chicken has been Nashville's thing for a bit. Hattie B's is the corporate version. Prince's is the authentic.

Broadway is a mini Country Music version of Times Square. Very few locals. For good reason.

Have fun!

Agreed on Prince's. I work a few miles from there. So damn crowded, though.

Here is my write-up from my trips down from NJ as a tourist 6x in the past three years that I just did for my buddy who is going to see Jason Isbell at The Ryman the weekend of 10/26-10/28.

++++++++

Shows at The Ryman

Seating

For lower level seats, Rows up to K are before the poles supporting the balcony and not under the balcony.  Those are the best seats in the place.

But the balcony seats are just as good sound wise - no view issues from anywhere in the balcony.  In the balcony using Section 10 as the example, Row F and Row K give you the most hip room, Row C and Row G the least as C and F have the same number of seats in a pie shaped section (as do G and K).

Go Early

Well, in case you decide not to do a tour, you can check out the areas at either end upstairs for the history of the joint.  But also to pick up a Hatch Print like these at the link below - they will sell out immediately after the crowd gets let in.  Hatch does a Print for nearly every show at the Ryman.  To purchase, go upstairs to the merch table and wait in line.  Also, at times, artists like Status Serigraph will also do posters like those in the link below (my regret in 2014 was not buying the series so I could get the guitar one - we only have the bird on the left).

Sights To See (in order listed) - The Three Must See Places for a weekend

(1) Johnny Cash Museum (downtown)

https://www.johnnycashmuseum.com/

The Johnny Cash Museum is excellent, but probably the 2nd best museum in town after the CMHoF.  But if you decide to flip and see AFTER the HoF, I think some of the luster will be lost after going through the huge HoF.  So, I always tell people to hit this one first.  If you arrive in town on an AM flight and settle at that hotel, easy to slot this one in after a late lunch (can’t do that with CMHoF).

(2A) Country Music HoF + Hatch Print add-on + RCA Studio A add-on (all downtown)

https://countrymusichalloffame.org/

A must see for any music fan.  Extensive background on the founding fathers and sisters of CM, this place is huge.  Plan to spend a big chunk of time here.  If you are debating having time for only one add-on, I actually think Hatch Print is the better of the two options (and you get to make your own).

(2B) Ryman Auditorium (downtown)

https://www.ryman.com/

If you got to town the night before and want to break up your museum days, slotting the Ryman Tour ahead of the CMHoF is the smart move.  Full tour is good and take time to appreciate the hallway with the signed Hatch Prints of shows in the past.

Other Cool Places to See (or options for the next weekend trip)

(3) George Jones Museum (downtown)

https://georgejones.com/

More modern than the Johnny Cash museum, but just a notch below.  Too many things in here you are like, “OK not sure why we need to see that”, but still some worthwhile items to see about George’s career.  Bonus for possibly seeing Nancy Jones in the elevator and this place has a great 4th floor rooftop deck over looking the Cumberland River and Nissan Stadium (can go to rooftop deck without going to museum).

Note:  they have changed the layout since we went there in late 2016, remaking an extensive gift shop on the 1st floor into a bar area and introducing food into the mix.  Not sure of what impact that had on the museum proper which is on the 3rd floor, as we have not been back to that floor since our visit.

(4) Grand Ole Opry (outside of downtown)

https://www.opry.com/

Neat to see and amazing how big this place is (compared to the cozy Ryman), but after seeing the Ryman, the Opry also suffers from “OK, I really saw all of this on the Ryman tour”.  One benefit is getting to pay $20 for a picture standing at the WSM microphone stand, which the Ryman does not offer.  Depending on when you go, Opry shows are actually held back at The Ryman during Nov-Dec.  Holiday season, your loss from extra traffic getting to the Opry as it is next to a mall is offset by the great holiday display at the Opry hotel.

(5) The Hermitage (outside of downtown)

https://thehermitage.com/

Home of former president Andrew Jackson, a well kept museum and great to see if you are into American history.  Plan on spending a good part of the day out here.

++++++

Eats and Beverages (all downtown unless noted)

(1) The Stillery (two locations: (1) On 2nd Avenue, coming from Broadway it is before George Jones Museum, on opposite site of street with black awning about five or six storefronts in from Broadway or (2) at their midtown site near Vanderbilt)

http://www.stillerynashville.com/

Our favorite to go to, definitely our first stop for lunch/dinner when we hit town.  The Mac & Cheese with hot chicken is a must, but you will wish it was bigger it’s so good.  Everything we have had here (salads, burgers, pizza) was fantastic.  Only downside is that they only have beer in bottles at 2nd Avenue location, but at least some are from local brewery Yazoo (the Midtown location was not open when we were last there in Oct 2017, so not sure if there are beers on tap there).  At 2nd Avenue location, there is a 2nd floor with a larger stage area than the street level seating space adjacent to where the kitchen sits.

(2) Rock Bottom Brewery

Main site - https://rockbottom.com/locations/nashville/

A member of the same chain as Gordon Biersch, we probably have been here more than any other place on the list.  They have their own brews (most are excellent) and some of your normal national bar beer standards if you really need/want to go there.  While the burgers and entrees are decent fare on their own, the nacho tray with chicken makes an excellent starter choice if you are a long time from the last meal or want to hit something up in between.  Big place so the wait is normally not too bad.  Bar seats are first come, first served, but this does not apply to booths in the bar area.  Sign up for their mailing list - they do run specials frequently.  Killer tray of nachos.

(3) Puckett’s Grocery

https://puckettsgro.com/nashville/

Great breakfast spot - prepare to wait a bit.  But worth the wait.

(4) Hattie B’s Hot Chicken (near Vanderbilt)

http://hattieb.com/

Never had it.  Heard it’s good.  Always a line outside.

(5) Flying Saucer

http://www.beerknurd.com/locations/nashville-flying-saucer

Located next to Union Station Hotel at 10th and Broadway, Flying Saucer is part of a southern U.S. oriented chain that specializes in beers on tap.  Probably 75-ish at any one time.  $3 drafts on Monday makes MNF a little more bearable to watch.

(6) Merchants

https://www.merchantsrestaurant.com/

We have not been here yet, but multiple friends said it was really good.  Probably the best bet for something a little more upscale on Broadway, but not a suit-and-tie requirement type of place.

(7) Tootsies

http://www.tootsies.net/

Probably the best place to catch a guest appearance by a country star you may know by name.  Crowded, convenient to Ryman and you can enter/exit through the back from the alley between the two.

(8) The Red Door Saloon (near Vanderbilt)

http://thereddoorsaloon.com/

Chicago based dive bar behind the Embassy Suites near Vanderbilt.  No reason to go there unless everything else in the Vanderbilt area has already closed.  And then, still debatable as to the value added other than damage to your liver.  All bets off on NYE from experience.

(9) Broadway Brewhouse

http://broadwaybrewhouse.net/

On Broadway, 1/2 way down on right walking towards the river, one of the better selections of beers on tap and sometimes they have 2-for-1 drafts on NFL Sunday.  Food is average.

(10) Bailey’s Sports Grille

http://baileyssportsgrille.com/locations/nashville/

Well, it is a decent place to catch a game.  Decent amount of beers on tap.  Food is average - Rock Bottom would be a better food choice at not much more $, aside from the monster sized screens here.

(11) Another Broken Egg

https://anotherbrokenegg.com/location/nashville-tn

Another breakfast spot we have not gotten to, a few friends have recommended this one.

(12) Demo’s

https://www.demosrestaurants.com/

Simple, family style diner-esque food.  The price is right and although the meals are a little on the small side, they tasted pretty good.

(13) Tavern (near Vanderbilt)

https://www.mstreetnashville.com/tavern/

Nice cozy and slightly upscale spot near Vanderbilt, decent food and beverage selection.  Not open at 130AM on NYE.

Since most of these were not open yet when we were last there, we have not yet been to Jason Aldean’s, Luke Bryan’s, Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey River, Blake Shelton’s Ole Red or Jon Rich’s place.  While open, we also did not go to Alan Jackson’s Good Tyme Bar or FGL House.   So, no opinion.  But here is an article about them -

Waste a ####load of money on midgrade food that’s trying too hard to taste exactly like something that can be found for half the price 5-6 exists to the west, east, or Southeast?

Nashville is terrible

Um, some people like to go out where other people are...

Great word about the seating at the Ryman. The balcony is REALLY low. Meaning if you're on floor level below the balcony, it can feel restrictive. The balcony is my prime spot there. Sound is incredible.

One of my favorite concert experiences ever was seeing this scene live https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7uJeb8wjQo .  Justin Vernon brought the rest of the band up front and they did Skinny Love completely unplugged. If people are quiet (and they will be) it's amazing.

That's a great clip Joe!  Can you save me the hassle of starting a new thread and give me a suggestion on how to spend the day in Knoxville? I'll be passing through on a road trip in two weeks and want to give it at least one full day.  Possibly two.

Spectacular!  Thank you very much!

I went to these when I was in Knoxville about a year ago.  All were pretty good

Knox Mason - hipstery southern food and cocktails

Stock and Barrell - Burgers, Beer and Bourbon...looked like a pretty solid bourbon selection

Downtown Grill and Brewery - typical brewpub type fare

nice walkable downtown from where I was (Crowne Plaza)

Spot on. If you're back and liked Stock And Barrel, they have a Taco place called Chivo that is basically the same idea as Stock and Barrell but instead of Hamburgers and Bourbon, it's Tacos and Tequila. Well done.

For the best BBQ in Knoxville, join me this Wednesday under the 1-40 Bridge at Blackstock and McGee and help me serve the Homeless folks. ;)

I was down for a composites conference at a previous job so no plans to go back anytime soon

The Knox Mason recommendation by Dan made me think. Some of the more expensive but fun and cool spots in town would be:

JC Holdway - Southern upscale.

Amelia - Italian upscale without being stuffy.

Lonesome Dove - Chef Tim Love's southwestern restaurant in a super rad historic old (legend says haunted) tavern downtown. Cocktails and high end creative food.

All are on the pricier end.

Check out the parks in Nashville while you are there.

The Edwin Warner Park is great for trails and just walking/running/hiking around.

The Centennial Park has a full scale Parthenon which includes various exhibits inside.

there is an absolutely amazing panera right on commerce street in the middle of all the action so hey you can go down there and i guess catch a show or see someone famous but the best part of your trip will be a bread bowl french onion soup trust me on this brohan it is why people go to nashville take that to the bank brochacho

One of Nashville surprises for me was Yeast Nashville. Cool spot serving authentic Kolaches and Breakfast Tacos. Owners are from Texas and it's a cool small place.

But here is an article about them -
Demo’s has a pretty decent steak at a reasonable price.

Belated thanks to everyone who posted ideas.  Some of what we did:

  • We stayed at the Hotel Bobby - very ecclectic hipster garage theme. Has an old bus on the rooftop bar.  Very cool place.
  • First night's dinner was at Puckett's Grocery - I know most recommended it for Breakfast, but their dinners were good too!
  • I forget the name of our next AM's breakfast - smaller place just north of the hotel, but good food.
  • ate at Martin's BBQ at the recommendation of the concierge - it was decent.  Not the best BBQ, certainly not the worst.
  • Toured the Ryman separate from our show time...Did some shopping down in the Gulch and I think it was called 12th street (Reese Witherspoon has a shop out there wifey wanted to visit)
  • Spent most of Thursday and Friday PM bar hopping on Broadway - The Stage, Tootsies, several others who's names escaped me.  We mostly avoided the more commercialized star's restaurants, but we at least popped into Ole' Red and FGL to see what they looked like.  I'm too old and not a big enough partier to go all night, but I loved how there wasn't cover so you could just bounce around.
  • Ryman show was Ben Rector - he was pretty good.  Not totally my type of music, but good nonetheless.  We were in row G, up front, so great seats.  My FIL knows a guy who books shows there, so he got us good seats.
  • Spent a lot of time just walking around and checking things out.  The Lime/Bird scooters are a blast once you get used to them.

Awesome. Glad you had fun.

Being a visitor, you may love downtown.  Growing up in the area, I stay far away. Tons of people everywhere.  Every restaurant or bar is overflowing with people. Could try The Gulch as well. Cool spot a few blocks from downtown. Nice restaurants and not as crowded.
This...and drinks have gotten expensive (also after the novelty wears off...pedal taverns and "wooo" guys and girls is very annoying).

Plenty of good restaurants down there...if looking for something less pricy but still tasty and a history of good customer service...I still recommend Demos (3rd Ave and Commerce).  Steak and spaghetti house.  Don't go there looking for any high end steak.  Its cheaper cuts...  I rarely even get a steak there.  Pasta combos, good chicken and rice soup, great entree salads with homemade dressing.  Good rolls...and not sure if the price is the same...but you used to be able to add a side of hashbrowns to any meal for $ .99  Used to lunch there a lot.

look brohan read my posts i have already covered less expensive and still tasty stop hippling me take that to the bank brochacho

Waste a ####load of money on midgrade food that’s trying too hard to taste exactly like something that can be found for half the price 5-6 exists to the west, east, or Southeast?

Nashville is terrible
The Memphis hate is strong with this one.

I’m tagging along with my wife on a work trip and will be staying at a hotel in the Gulch from March 28-31.

Any recommendations for restaurants, bars and music in the area?
