Well, NFL Network has just announced officially that "Dr. Z," Paul Zimmerman, the guy who covered the NFL for Sports Illustrated for nearly 30 years, has just passed away at age 86.  The man probably covered the NFL better than anyone else.  He was the reason why I myself got my subscription to SI back in 1991.  But football wasn't the only sport he covered.  He also covered the Iranian hostage crisis and its impact on the sports world back in the early 1980s.  He will be truly missed.  Godspeed, Dr Z!

Wow, I didn't know he was that old. I knew he had a stroke several years ago but I thought he was still in his 70s.

He was my favorite writer at SI and one of the reasons I subscribed all those years.

I had only started reading his columns about 2 years before he had the stroke. He was my favorite sports writer and the loss of his writing really bummed me out.
