Mass shooting on my block. Thousand Oaks. At least 12 dead. This world is f’d Up (1 Viewer)

For many years we were named the safest city in the country.  One of the reasons I moved my family there. My wife just texted me that my youngest daughter was home so I can breathe but this is so terrible. We’ve been to Borderline.many times. Mostly a country place that has up and coming acts there. Seen Lee Brice and ithers  Also had comedy acts. Dice Clay player there 3 days ago

Wife just said one of the kids pounded on our door as he was running from the scene looking for safety

It sucks

3-5 years ago when these stories would break out, deep down i would hope it wasn't a muslim related incident as i didn't want to believe we were one of those countries, as if it was an American it would make me feel better/safter or something.

It no longer matters. Crazy is just crazy and we have plenty of em from every fold.

What’s even worse is many people who go here were traumatized when attending that country festival In Las Vegas. Big group.

Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus rushed into the building within 2-3 minutes of the first call and lost his life attempting to stop the gunman.

Rest in peace, brave man.  May your family find some small solace in the fact that you are a hero.  May your name never be forgotten.
29 years and 4 months of service. Arrrrgh

That is crazy.  Making it through just one horrific event like this would severely mess you up mentally.  I doubt I'd want to leave my house ever again if I managed to survive 2 mass shooting events.

Just 5 mass shootings short of one every day for 2018.

Now saying someone else has died?  Making it 13, but not clear in these counts if shooter gets in the count or not.

Oh my God dude.  No words.

Incels have more in common with Islamic terrorists than not.

1. Highly likely to be sexually deprived.

2. Complete disrespect for women.

3. Radicalized. Heavily involved in online communities espousing hate (4chan, storefront, etc)

It is insane how many acts of terrorism we have been victim to over the last 5 years or so. Just unreal.

So glad you are your family are safe

I don't know how anyone recovers from this.  While 13 people are dead there are literally 100s of people that will never recover.  They are always forgotten in these tragedies.  There will be people that cry or run or pass out every time a door is closed loudly for the rest of their lives.  It will deny them opportunities, love, friendship etc...

:(

horrific. sad. terrible.

sorry this kind of thing has hit so close to home, judge- but happy you and yours are physically unharmed.

This will be the third time in my life I've heard about a domestic terrorist attack like this and needed to immediately check in with loved ones to ensure they weren't one of the victims.

Neat country.

story of our nation.  thoughts, prayers, vigils, no answers.  really no place is safe anymore.

I've been seeing that emoji lately but have no idea what it means... ?
Sadness. Sadness over how horrible some humans can be toward others  :(

ETA: I posted from my phone earlier and must have inadvertently chosen something other than the sad emoticon I meant to.

If the discussion shifted from just outright control, to a mental health issue I think progress can be made.
Sounds like they did try the mental health route and...

Police had several contacts with Long previously.

In April, officers responded to a disturbance at Long's home, and he was somewhat irate and acting irrationally, Dean said. A mental health specialist met with him and ultimately decided not to detain him under laws pertaining to his mental health.

The gunman was on active duty with the US Marine Corps from August 2008 to March 2013, according to Defense Department records.

I mean, if you change the laws to restrict gun access to unstable individuals like this, who is outraged other than 2nd Amendment nuts?

Instead of banning and confiscating firearms, making it a bit harder for diagnosed patients to get guns seems a moderate way to tackle this problem.  This gets us maybe to the same place where a guy taking a leak behind a bar in college, can't live within 1000 feet of a school.  There will be some overkill, but we are ok with this for several other situations.
