I have never heard of that before- thank god.

Trap is very alive, it's the most popular music amongst the kids. When I say rock is dead, I mean that the only artists I see kids talk about or reference are the old school ones like The Beatles, Nirvana, Green Day, etc. There aren't really current popular rock bands outside of the very few extremes.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply or state that trap was dead. My yelling got in the way of proper syntax and comprehension. I'll tone it down. I know trap is huge. I meant is this style -- a sort of "emo trap" -- the sort of thing what you talk about when you talk about trap and rap being the dominant form of music your kids listen to, as opposed to new rock and roll bands? Lil' Peep was in Wicca's clique. They all called themselves Gothboiclique.

Anyway, as far as Wicca Phase Springs Eternal goes, I've heard worse. In all seriousness, it is a little odd that somebody decided to synthesize emo/hardcore social trappings with actual trap music. It got me thinking that rock was a bit dead with the kids.

Probably, I haven't listened. I'm at work and while I can sneak on the keyboard for minute here and there, I can't crank any music up.

Lucid Again by Clowns from 2017 is a grabber. "Not Coping" is my favorite new punk track of the past few years. Nature/Nurture from 2019 is not grabbing me.

I am rough on this year's albums today. Dang.
I *LOVED* Lucid Again, and I am pretty high on Nature/Nurture right now as well... they are such different albums though, but I am cool with both.

As for the emo/trap/soundcloud stuff. I mostly don't like it. Some Lil Peep is ok and I think XXX was fantastic but most of it is not my thing.

Why didn’t y’all tell me Clowns were from Melbourne?! In!

David Comes to Life-ian guitars. Yes plz.
Jaysus got me into them in a song thread. I think it was a thread about songs that give you the chills. Clowns's "Not Coping" was his pick.

To your points: Clowns are an impressive band. It's really good stuff. I have to give Nature/Nurture another listen, as whether I like something or not is totally dependent upon my mood, physical and mental make-up, etc.

oh yeah, that reminded me that I wanted to point out that both "Heart Attack Man" and "Heart Attack Kids" had songs on my release radar this week.

ETA: I am liking Heart Attack Man more and more each time I hear them
But think of the kids

RR this week:

craig finn

allah-lahs

ausmuteants

helms alee

the brand new heavies (!? loved these guys innaday- no idea if will be a new release or re-release)

greys

flying lotus

fka twigs (he 2nd album wasn't so hot for me, even though I loved the first. there may have even been another album inbetween... no idea... but looking forward to hearing this).

####kid

pile

king gizzard (new album)

GBV (new album!)

institute (looking forward to this- older stuff was solid)

GRMLN (it's been at least a week since he's been on my RR- slacker)

New Rodrigo y Gabriela album today if you're into that sort of thing.  Good for work/background

Don’t know if this tickles anyone’s fancy, but I went to pre-load the new Vampire Weekend and saw that Pete Rock dropped a new instrumental album “Return of the SP1200”

I love listening to his stuff as background music

Reading the reviews of Vampire Weekend. Not hearing what they're hearing, but it could be good. I'll keep an open mind for sure. Hoping for a good album.

No. Not at all. Listening to it piecemeal. I'm not hearing great songs is all. That's why I'm merely "hoping." I'll definitely give a listen when it comes out.
If it's met by anything other than gushing over its greatness met with simultaneous instant backlash, I'll be shocked. It's been so long, their past record is so good and they're so hyped now, it might as well be a new Game of Thrones episode.

I like the first song, duet with Danielle Haim, reviews said it was a turn to more folk and less afro-pop and I get that here.

I love Harmony Hall.

Bambina is short but manages to work in some deep bass and autotune, maybe a bit filler-ish but there are 18 songs on this thing.

This Life is a good single probably the most typical Vampre Weekend single of the pre-released songs.

Big Blue is another shorter transition song but I like the Alt-Country folkiness.

How Long is a climate change message song where the message maybe takes over from the music but not in a great way. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank pulled this off better than any album is recent memory, to the point that no one even talked about it as a recurring theme, so maybe it didn't do it that well.

Unbearably White, sad ballad time, must be at about the halfway point of the album.

Rich Man has all the beautiful strings and production, going to go ahead and assume Rostam contributed to this one

Married in a Gold Rush is another duet with Danielle Haim and with the synths, strings and call/response feels like the perfect halfway between a Haim and Vampire Weekend song... with a distinct country twinge. It's pretty damn great.

My Mistake would fit right in on the playlist at the taqueria on the moon at the Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino.

Sympathy feels like festival rock (think MGMT's huge album) in the best way possible, full of 'let's go's' and starts/stops and places to dance and sing/chant along.

Sunflower is the song that scared me for this album, afraid they may go full Phish but it's a one off that fits in fine with the songs before it.

Flower Moon starts with the hippy Sunflower song but quickly goes in a poppier direction    then brings in a sample (I think) that kicks this into being a pretty awesome song with an awesome beat and incredible sound, slows back down to meld with...

2021 which has been out for a while but is obviously great with it's electronic/folk balladry and the gradual build.

We Belong Together brings back the country balladry from Married in a Gold Rush, is a great great song and in the current climate where Old Town Road is the biggest song in the world, could find major crossover success?

Stranger is the Paul Simon VW coming out in full force but another duet with Danielle Haim. We're fully into folk/country territory here, picks up and builds a bit at the end then slows right back down. Things are gonna stay strange.

Spring Snow combines digital sounds and light/folk singing in a way that reminds me a bit of The Postal Service, the piano and autotune then transitions to something more Bon Iver-ish

Jerusalem, New York, Berlin is a piano driven finale with a wonderful sing a long quality.

----

There are way more hits than misses here, the turn to piano/folk/country and the duets could turn some people off I'm sure but on first listen, I love it and that turn probably puts it even more in my wheelhouse for a band I already loved.
