[Dynasty] 2020 NFL Draft Class (3 Viewers)

The Athletic's Dane Brugler ranks Joe Burrow second in his updated quarterback rankings for the 2020 NFL Draft.

As you can probably guess, the only player ahead of Burrow is Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa. An afterthought coming into the 2019 season, Burrow has been absolutely sensational in 2019 with 29 touchdown passes. As Brugler notes, Burrow did play better down the stretch, but the leap in his game from last year to this is substantial. "Burrow’s ability to negotiate muddy pockets and deliver an accurate football downfield are NFL-ready skills," he writes. "He has a stone-cold demeanor on the field and looks unfazed by whatever is thrown at him." As Brugler also notes, he has a showdown with Alabama coming up on November 9. That game will be massive for the 6-foot-4, 216-pound quarterback's draft stock.

The Athletic's Dane Brugler ranks Utah State redshirt junior QB Jordan Love as the No.3 QB for the 2020 draft class.

Despite Love's shaky 2019 campaign, Brugler is still high on the Mountain West passer. Brugler stressed that the tier of QBs behind Tua Tagovailoa and Joe Burrow leaves room for "project" types like Love, and that everyone in this group has clear flaws. Love (6'4/220) is a solid athlete with a fantastic arm and a smooth release. Aesthetically, he looks like the ideal QB prospect and has enough flashes of talent to match the appearance. Still, Love will need to prove more stable play over the next five games or so.

SMU senior RB Xavier Jones ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries in a 34-31 win on Thursday over Houston.

It was yet another impressive game from Jones, and it helps the Mustangs remain undefeated on the 2019 campaign. His first scored was a 62-yard scamper to give Southern Methodist a 14-7 lead with 10:41 remaining in the first half, and he scored again from two-yards out in the third quarter to make it 28-13. This is four straight games where Jones has gone over the century mark, and he's scored two touchdowns in three-of-four contests. Expect Jones to get plenty of touches next Saturday in SMU's contest with Memphis.

UCF junior WR Gabriel Davis leads the FBS with 3.59 yards per route run among 120 qualifying receivers.

120 receivers in the country have at least 200 routes run this year, but none of them have been more efficiency with their routes than Davis. Davis (6'3/214) is the primary threat in an explosive, aggressive UCF passing offense. On just 47 receptions, Davis has earned 833 yards (17.7 per catch) and 10 touchdowns. The Knights will be counting on Davis to keep up the pace against Temple this weekend.

Per Pro Football Focus, Oklahoma senior QB Jalen Hurts leads the FBS with 15.0 yards per attempt when throwing from a clean pocket.

Passing from a clean pocket is far more repeatable than passing under pressure because the conditions are more stable. Hurts, who gets plenty of clean pockets at Oklahoma, has been a step above anyone else in college football in those conditions. While Hurts (6'2/218) sits at 15.0 yards per attempt from clean pockets, Tua Tagovailoa ranks second all the way down at 11.6. What Hurts is doing in HC Lincoln Riley's offense is historic.

Pro Football Focus has Georgia Tech redshirt sophomore RB Jordan Mason as their highest-rated RB among players with at least 75 carries.

Mason does not have the volume of other top RBs like Chuba Hubbard (Oklahoma State) or Jonathan Taylor (Wisconsin), but he is excelling with the chances he is given. Mason, with 6.0 yards per carry and six touchdowns, has been a lone bright spot on an otherwise inept Georgia Tech offense. His 6-foot-1, 219-pound frame is bruising and just agile enough to be a best-of-both-worlds type of force. Georgia Tech will face Pitt a week from now on Nov. 2.

Alabama junior QB Tua Tagovailoa leads the FBS with a 137.6 passer rating on play-action passes, per Pro Football Focus.

Considering play-action passes are often downfield shots and Alabama's WR corps has speed for days, it makes perfect sense that Tagovailoa (6'1/218) is the country's best play-action passer. Tagovailoa throws with great accuracy and pacing, making it easy for his receivers to catch a deep ball in stride and take it to the house. Unfortunately, Tagovailoa will not play this week, but he will return to play-action dominance when he is able to see the field again.

CU Buffs star Laviska Shenault “might be smart” to pass on 2020 NFL Draft, scout says

BOULDER — One pro scout’s advice for Laviska Shenault?

Come back to Folsom Field, young man. Stick around.

“My guess is that he might be smart coming back,” Dan Shonka, the former Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs scout and general manager with the Ourlads.com scouting service, said of the CU Buffs’ junior receiver.

“Every team is different. But if (an NFL) general manager is in fear of his job, he’ll probably pass on him. And this is not a great year for Shenault to have a problem, because there’s tons of receivers out there, so he’s going to drop, anyway.”

Still, it was clear Friday night that NFL front offices haven’t given up their fascination with the Buffs’ 6-foot-2 wideout either, if the guest list at the press box inside Folsom was any indication.

At least 13 scouts from 10 NFL teams, including the Broncos, requested seats for CU’s tussle with USC. And while the increased interest was fueled partly by the men from Troy, Shenault gave the evaluators a lot to chew on early, piling up 189 yards from scrimmage through the game’s first three quarters — with 71 of them coming on a catch off a slant route that saw the Texans outrun the entire Trojans defense.

Which is one reason why the consensus before the season said that the strong, nimble Shenault would be an iron-clad lock to be taken in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, perhaps even among the top 10 picks.

Although after a junior season that’s seen Shenault miss nearly three weeks and almost two games with a core muscle injury to his upper body, that consensus hadn’t been sounding quite so certain anymore.

“I would think (we’d grade him) in the third round,” said Shonka, who’s helping to select talent for next January’s East-West Shrine Game. “We had graded him a little higher earlier.”

So did most everyone else. Going into Friday night’s home date with USC, the latest CBSSports.com mock draft projected Shenault being selected in the first round, but with pick No. 30. Bleacher Report’s 2020 mock from Oct. 5 was more optimistic, slotting the CU wideout to be taken with pick No. 14 overall.

But in both cases, the stock for the Texas speedster, who went into the weekend with 25 catches for 342 receiving yards and four touchdowns — two receiving, two rushing — has been dropping. Slowly.

“If Laviska had stayed fully healthy for his career, I would have suggested he leave early,” noted Pro Football Focus college analyst Jordan Plocher. “Since he has had multiple injuries, teams will have varying levels of concern about if he can stay healthy for a 16-game NFL season.”

And that health, not talent, is going to be the scouts’ No. 1 sticking point. Shenault came into this autumn coming off surgeries to repair 2018 injuries to both his shoulder and toe, dings that forced him to miss three contests about this time a year ago.

Stay and you could prove to scouts that your body can take the pounding of a marathon season. A first-round maybe in 2020 becomes a first-round lock in 2021.

Then again, if you get hurt again, that’s a gamble, too. It’s a year you didn’t get paid, a year of tire tread off your legs — and a year you don’t get back.

No. 2 has yet to tip his pitch, but underclassmen typically query the NFL Draft advisory board in December and receive notice after that. The deadline for underclassmen to apply for early entry is Jan. 20, and the league will give notice of eligible underclassmen to clubs on Jan. 24.

“That’s what (teams) do,” Shenault said of scouts’ critiques. “So regardless of what I say or what I do, it’s whatever they say. They’re going to feel how they feel.”

Colorado junior WR Laviska Shenault posted nine receptions for a season-high 172 yards and a touchdown in Friday's 35-31 loss against USC.

Shenault (6'2/224) finally looked to be 100 percent healthy after a rough stretch. He suffered a core muscle injury late in September and missed some time, and he had just eight catches for 116 yards and no receiving touchdowns in the two outings since returning. This was his second 100-yard game of the season, and most yards since he went for 177 yards and a score in a win at Nebraska on Sept. 8, 2018.

Oct 26, 2019, 1:17 AM ET

USC senior WR Michael Pittman ended up with seven receptions for 156 yards and two touchdowns in Friday's 35-31 win at Colorado.

Pittman (6'4/225) had a giant stat line, and he saved his best for last. He went for over 100 yards in the fourth quarter alone, including both of his scores. The Trojans were down 31-21 heading into the fourth, but Pittman had a 44-yard touchdown with 11:25 to go, and the game-winning score from 37 yards out with just 2:15 to go. The latter also made some folks happy who were hoping for a certain amount of points in the game. Pittman will look to stay hot in next Saturday's visit from Oregon.

Only 6 months until draft time.  4 months until the NFL Combine.

This offseason is looking like one to savor with this insane 2020 class.

Ohio State junior RB J.K. Dobbins ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 58 yards in a 38-7 blowout win over Wisconsin on Saturday.

This was supposed to be the Dobbins vs. Jonathan Taylor show. It was a pretty lopsided show, if we're being honest. Taylor was held to 52 yards, and Dobbins (5'10/217) had absolutely no issues finding holes in the Badgers' front seven. He also showed off his underrated play as a receiver, bailing out Justin Fields a couple of times when Fields was under pressure. H picked up a nine-yard score in the third, and added a 14-yard trip to paydirt near the top of the fourth quarter. Simply put, Dobbins has been as good -- if not better -- than any tailback in the country. Expect him to have another huge game after the Buckeyes' bye when he faces off against Maryland.

Oct 26, 2019, 3:08 PM ET

Kansas State redshirt senior RB James Gilbert handled 13 carries for 105 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 48-41 upset win over Oklahoma.

Only one of Kansas State’s five rushing touchdowns was ran in by Gilbert (5'9/198). The team’s star RB was the only player to go over 100 yards rushing on the day, though. Gilbert’s longest run was just a 26-yard scoot, but he was constantly picking up chunk gains against the Sooners defense. His ability to keep the offense ahead of the sticks and fight for extra yards made it easy for the Wildcats to end the day with almost double the time of possession as Oklahoma.

Oct 26, 2019, 3:49 PM ET

Oklahoma senior QB Jalen Hurts completed 19-of-26 passes for 395 yards and a touchdown while rushing 19 times for 96 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 48-41 upset loss to Kansas State.

There is plenty of blame to go around for Oklahoma getting upset, but none of it should be thrust upon Hurts. The 6-foot-2, 218-pound senior played right up to his usual Heisman-caliber standard, earning 15.2 yards per pass and picking up all but six of the Sooners’ rushing yards. Hurts was a one-man offense. Alas, Kansas State’ offense played marvelous ball control and put up plenty of points themselves, so Hurts didn’t get enough chances to win the shootout. Hurts and the Sooners will look to get back on track against Iowa State on Nov. 9 following a bye next week.

Oct 26, 2019, 3:46 PM ET

Mississippi State junior RB Kylin Hill took 21 carries for 150 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 49-30 loss to Texas A&M.

Win or lose, Hill (5'11/215) can take solace in the fact that he posted another great game for his NFL resume. Hill had been slowed down by elite defenses the past few weeks, but got back into a groove this week with his fifth 100-yard game of the season. Next week's game against Arkansas gives the bruising back a chance to earn his sixth such performance of the season.

Oct 26, 2019, 4:06 PM ET

Oklahoma State redshirt sophomore RB Chuba Hubbard carried the ball 22 times for 116 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 34-27 win over Iowa State.

It's a testament to how excellent Oklahoma State's young offensive corps is that Hubbard (6'1/207) can go over 100 yards and be considered the team's third-best performer on the day. Hubbard's day did include a lot of filler, though, as over half of his yardage came on one 65-yard run. In fairness to Hubbard, Iowa State's defense came into the day allowing just 3.25 yards per attempt this season.

Oct 26, 2019, 8:01 PM ET

Oklahoma State junior WR Tylan Wallace brought in eight passes for 131 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 34-27 win over Iowa State.

Wallace (6'0/185) made a number of sick plays in this game, but none more eye-popping than a simple screen pass he took 71 yards to the house. Wallace literally barreled through a handful of Iowa State defenders on the way to the end zone, even shoving off two separate defenders while tip-toeing down the sideline. That kind of balance and strength is rare, especially from a wide receiver.

Penn State redshirt sophomore WR KJ Hamler earned five receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 28-7 win over Michigan State.

Hamler (5'9/176) was just one of two Penn State skill players to earn a receiving touchdown on the day, with the other being TE Pat Freiermuth. Hamler's scoring effort was electric, as always, as he leaped over/through a defender to reach the ball over the goal line. The star receiver now has eight touchdowns on 37 catches this season, meaning he is scoring once about every fives times he brings in a pass.

Oct 26, 2019, 7:39 PM ET

LSU redshirt senior QB Joe Burrow completed 32-of-42 passes for 321 yards with a touchdown and interception and ran for 31 yards with a score in a 23-20 win over Auburn on Saturday.

This wasn't the usual offensive explosion from LSU that we've seen over the first two-thirds of the season, but, this was also easily the toughest defense they've faced, and ultimately, it's a pass. The touchdown throw was a connection with Terrace Marshall Jr. to make it 7-3 LSU, and the touchdown run extended the lead to 23-13. Burrow wasn't at his best, but it's tough to argue with his success in 2019. The game of the year comes in two weeks when LSU faces off with Alabama on November 9.

Oct 26, 2019, 7:34 PM ET

LSU junior RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire ran for 136 yards and score in a 23-20 win over Auburn on Saturday.

Edwards-Helaire had arguably his best game of the season; going for the 136 against one of the better defenses in the country. His six-yard touchdown scoot in the middle of the third quarter gave the Bayou Bengals a 16-13 lead after Cad York missed the extra point. Most of the attention has gone to Joe Burrow and the passing game, but LSU can run the football, as well. Edwards-Helaire (5'8/209) and LSU will take on Alabama in two weeks. We can't wait.

Oct 26, 2019, 7:35 PM ET

Florida State junior RB Cam Akers carried the ball 20 times for 144 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday's 35-17 win over Syracuse.

Akers was just about as efficient on the ground as QB Alex Hornibrook was passing. In many cases, that is an indictment of the QB, but this time around, it’s a testament to how incredibly well Akers played to carry Florida State to a win. The 5-foot-11, 212-pound RB's blend of speed and balance proved far too much for a flimsy Syracuse defense to handle. Akers’ four touchdowns are the most he has scored in any game all season.

Oct 26, 2019, 7:03 PM ET

Arizona senior QB Khalil Tate completed just 17-of-33 passes for 205 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and ran for 103 yards and a touchdown in a 31-41 loss to Stanford on Saturday.

Tate (6'2/215) had flashes of brilliance in this game, including a 57-yard scamper into the end zone in the second quarter to bring the Wildcats to within a score at 21-17. Those moments of brilliance were once again followed by long stretches of struggle, and unfortunately, this is an accurate description of Tate's career. He's always going to tantalize because of his speed, but the passing just hasn't developed. Arizona has lost four straight, and they'll need to beat Oregon State on Saturday if they have any chance of making a bowl with Oregon, Utah and Arizona State still left on the schedule.

Oct 26, 2019, 7:03 PM ET

Minnesota redshirt junior ATH Seth Green ran for 34 yards and two touchdowns on six carries in a 52-10 blowout win over Maryland on Saturday.

You know what's going to happen when Seth Green is in the backfield. That doesn't mean you're going to stop it. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound TE/RB/goal-line monster scored touchdowns from 10 and one-yards out, respectively, and he helped the undefeated Gophers pick up 323 yards on the ground on Saturday. Green should get more chances at touches inside the red zone against Penn State after a bye on November 9.

Oct 26, 2019, 6:43 PM ET

Minnesota redshirt senior RB Rodney Smith carried the ball 17 times for 103 yards with a touchdown in a 52-10 shellacking of Maryland on Saturday.

There are a lot of reasons that the Golden Gophers are undefeated -- yes, including their schedule -- but one of the key reasons Minnesota is 8-0 is the play of players like Smith (5'11/210). The Gophers gashed the Terrapins for 323 yards, and Smith picked up his fifth-straight hundred-yard contest, and also the fifth-straight that he's found the end zone. Minnesota has a plethora of players they can give the ball to, but Smith is the best. He and the Gophers have a chance to move to 9-0 if they can beat Penn State on November 9.

Indiana junior WR Whop Philyor caught 14 passes for 178 yards in a huge 38-31 upset victory over Nebraska.

Philyor (5'11/178) has had an incredible stretch in which he has caught at least 10 passes and had 142 yards receiving in three of his last four games, totaling 40 catches for 508 yards and two touchdowns in that span. To put his current explosion into perspective, Philyor only posted 23 catches for 235 yards in all of 2018. Philyor is a vital cog in the surging Hoosier offense and should continue to catch passes by the dozen when Indiana hosts Northwestern next Saturday.

Oct 27, 2019, 12:40 AM ET

UTEP senior RB Treyvon Hughes rushed 13 times for 60 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 42-21 home loss against Louisiana Tech.

The Miners haven't had a lot to cheer about in an otherwise dreary season, but Hughes (6'1/235) has certainly been a bright spot. He has scored a rushing touchdown in three straight outings, five times in the past five contests and seven times in his seven games overall. He'll look to make it four games in a row with a rushing score when the Miners head to Denton to battle North Texas.

Oct 27, 2019, 12:07 AM ET

Louisiana Tech redshirt junior RB Justin Henderson rushed 17 times for 65 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Saturday's 42-21 win at UTEP.

Henderson (5'10/218) saw his string of 100-yard games snapped at two, but he has posted at least one touchdown in five straight outings. He has scored 11 rushing scores and one receiving touchdown during the scoring binge. Henderson is averaging 102.2 rushing yards per game over his past six contests, too. He'll look to keep up the good work against North Texas on Nov. 9 after the team's bye.

Oct 26, 2019, 11:44 PM ET

Arizona State senior WR Brandon Aiyuk caught six passes for 82 yards in Saturday's 42-32 loss to UCLA.

While most of Arizona State's production was late in the fourth quarter, Aiyuk (6'1/198) actually earned most of his before the game got too out of hand. Alas, Aiyuk's efforts were not enough to keep it close, in part because the Sun Devils' run game was not helping out any. Arizona State face USC in two weeks.

Oct 26, 2019, 11:22 PM ET

UCLA redshirt senior RB Joshua Kelley ran the ball 34 times for 164 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday's 42-32 win over Arizona State.

Kelley (5'11/219) earned his touchdowns, there is no doubt about it. The redshirt senior put in a grueling amount of carries and still managed to continue on trucking until the very end. Kelley did help himself plenty, though, by picking up a hat trick in the first half to help UCLA go into halftime with a three-score lead. Look for Kelley to be leaned up again in next week's game against Colorado.

Oct 26, 2019, 11:08 PM ET

Alabama junior WR Devonta Smith (shoulder) suffered a bruised shoulder in Saturday's 48-7 win over Arkansas.

HC Nick Saban said after the game that Smith was fine, and he will have two weeks to recover before the next game Nov. 9 against LSU. Smith ended up with four receptions for 67 yards before departing. Jaylen Waddle (5-39-0) stepped up his play behind Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III.

SOURCE: Matt Zenitz on Twitter

Oct 26, 2019, 10:47 PM ET

Texas senior WR Collin Johnson caught seven passes for 101 yards in a 37-27 loss to TCU on Saturday.

Johnson (6'6/221) had missed multiple games with a hamstring injury but in three games since returning has posted 21 catches for 279 yards and no touchdowns for the Longhorns. Texas has lost two of their last three games thanks to a defense that has allowed an average of 40 points per game in that span. Johnson is doing his part to help the cause so hopefully DC Todd Orlando can get things right with the defense during Texas' Week 10 bye.

Oct 26, 2019, 10:44 PM ET

Alabama junior WR Henry Ruggs caught four passes for 47 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 48-7 win over Arkansas.

Ruggs' touchdown was an interesting one. QB Mac Jones rolled to the left and appeared to be firing to a WR at the front of the end zone, but overshot him. Ruggs (6'0/190) just so happened to be behind that player to catch the touchdown pass. It's not exactly clear if Jones meant to throw to Ruggs or not, but either way, it's six points for Alabama.

Oct 26, 2019, 10:27 PM ET

Iowa State senior WR Deshaunte Jones caught eight passes for 91 yards in Saturday's 34-27 loss to Oklahoma State.

Jones has now hauled in at least seven passes in five of his seven appearances this season. Without Hakeem Butler there to generate constant explosive plays, Iowa State's offense has leaned more on Jones' ability to move the chains underneath. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound receiver was doing all he could to open up the passing offense until QB Brock Purdy malfunctioned for three interceptions in the fourth quarter. Jones and the Cyclones take the field next in two weeks at Oklahoma.
