I am ok with the age. He had a nice sophomore season at 20 so it doesn't look like a case of an older guy beating up in younger college players.

NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein compares South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel to NFL WR Pharoh Cooper.

This is not the kindest comparison, if we're being honest/blunt. Cooper flashes big-time ability at times when he was in college, but didn't live up to the hype. Zierlein does note that he has strong hands with "the will to win" on catches, and that he has "running back vision" with the ball in his hands. There are more weaknesses here than strengths on his list, however, including the fact that 2018 was his only healthy season with the Gamecocks, and he criticizes his footwork and route-running. "While Samuel is tough and competitive, he lacks suddenness and might need scheme help with motion and bunch formations to help free him against NFL man coverage," Zierlein writes. "He is a gamer who thrives once the ball is in his hands, and he might be able to help a team from the slot if he can stay healthy."

South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel has dinners, meetings, or workouts with at least nine teams on his schedule.

Those teams are the Chargers, Buccaneers, Bengals, Saints, Titans, Cowboys, Panthers, Broncos and 49ers. All of these teams could use a playmaker like Samuel (5'11/214), but all of these teams will be evaluating his injury history with their medical staffs before making him a selection on draft night. NFL Media's Lance Zierlein reported that some teams are "concerned" with his injury history, but his ability to pick up yards after the catch make him a worthwhile risk on the surface. Samuel is expected to be a Day 2 pick.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller is "hearing top 40 talk" for South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel.

Samuel's (5'11/214) injury history reportedly "concerns" teams, but others seem to be really interested. Draft analysts have previously compared Samuel to Panthers WR D.J. Moore, who was selected with 24th overall pick, but Moore was a slightly better prospect than Samuel. The Athletic's Dane Brugler expects Samuel to operate the slot and provide value as a return specialist. Samuel is widely considered as a Day 2 selection.

An NFL team official told Bleacher Report's Matt Miller that he believes that South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel could "hear late first-round consideration."

At the very least, it's looking more and more like Samuel will come off the board early in Round 2, at the latest. There is clearly a little juice around a higher selection, though, making this one to keep an eye on. Deebo's injury history may scare some teams off, but he has done very, very well for himself during the evaluating season, showing out impressively during the Reese's Senior Bowl practice week back in January and subsequently posting a composite SPARQ athletic score at the combine which placed him in the 76th percentile of NFL wideouts.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller sees a lot of Stefon Diggs in his analysis of South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel.

Samuel (5'11/214) has the production, physical tools and intangibles of a player who would be a near-lock to go in the first round, but the medical history is what has kept his draft stock down by comparison. Miller wrote that Samuel has "excellent speed and agility; able to get into the open field smoothly. Makes start-stops with no issues" in his analysis of the wideout. Samuel could very well be drafted in the latter portion of the first round; anything worse would make him a steal.

Rotoworld's Josh Norris passes along that South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel is taking a predraft visit to the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday.

Samuel (5'11/214) is one of a number of intriguing wide receivers who could come off the board on Day 2, though we would not completely discount the possibility that somebody jumps on him late on Day 1. To that point, Bleacher Report's Matt Miller was told by an NFL team official at the end of March that Deebo could "hear late first-round consideration." Miller, himself, compares the South Carolina wideout to Vikings star Stefon Diggs.

The Athletic's Dane Brugler believes South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel will be drafted before the 58th overall pick.

Samuel (5'11/214) would be a surprise to see in the first round, but Brugler thinks he's going Round 2. The Round 1/2 turn seems to be the beginning of a large projected run on wide receivers, and Samuel will definitely be a part of that run. Just how big can that run be? Well, NFL Media's Daniel Jeremiah has 11 wide receivers ranked in the 40-to-100 range on his big board. If your team needs future starters at receiver, you are in luck.

NFL Draft Scout's Rob Rang lists South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel as his first wide receiver that won't be selected in the first round.

We suppose it's possible that Samuel could sneak up into the first-round to a wideout-needy team, but more than likely he's going on Day 2, and he could be a steal. "On an offense with few legitimate future NFL prospects around him, Samuel scored 27 touchdowns as a receiver (16), runner (seven) and kick returner (four) in just 30 career games, most of them, of course, against SEC competition," writes Rang. There are obvious injury concerns here, but because of the big-play ability, it's hard to imagine Samuel is still on the board after pick 64; aka the end of the second round.

49ers selected South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel with the No. 36 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Samuel (5’11/214) overcame repeated early-career hamstring injuries and a fibula fracture to put everything together as a redshirt senior for a 62/882/11 (14.0 YPR) receiving line, earning first-team All-SEC on offense and memorably dusting Clemson’s all-world secondary for 210 yards. Samuel also earned first-team All-SEC as a return specialist with his fourth career kick-return score. He tested as a 93rd-percentile athlete at the Combine, running 4.48 with a 39-inch vertical. Highly competitive, built like a running back, and exceptionally physical after the catch, Samuel projects to slot receiver as a cross between Percy Harvin and Golden Tate.

NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco expects second-round WR Deebo Samuel to be a Week 1 starter.

Samuel was drafted to replace Marquise Goodwin opposite Dante Pettis. He has a slot build at 5'11/214, but the 49ers think he's strong enough to play outside. San Francisco has overhauled their receiver corps with Samuel and third-rounder Jalen Hurd. Samuel looks to have a clear path to rookie-year targets.

-- Second-round pick Deebo Samuel routinely got open quickly and made catches in one-on-one drills against the coverage of seventh-round pick Tim Harris. In a team drill, Samuel made a nice finger-tip catch of a pass from Layton Rabb, a tryout quarterback from Midwestern State.

At South Carolina, Deebo Samuel caught 16 touchdown passes, rushed for seven scores and took four kickoffs to the end zone.

“I played almost every position,” Samuel said, “except for quarterback.”

At Tennessee, Jalen Hurd played running back and ranked sixth in school history in rushing yards when he transferred after less than three full seasons. At Baylor, he played wide receiver and had 69 catches for 946 yards last year.

“There’s not really any limit to me,” Hurd said, “on the offensive side.”

Samuel and Hurd have jack-of-all-trades qualities. However, they figure to have a singular responsibility in 2019: Upgrade the 49ers’ underwhelming receiver corps.

The 49ers used two high-end draft picks — a second-rounder on Samuel and a third-rounder on Hurd — on versatile wideouts who at least initially figure to play one position.

That is, Samuel, who said he’d like to keep returning kickoffs in the NFL, could focus solely on claiming the starting spot previously held by Pierre Garcon, whose contract option wasn’t exercised after the season. And Hurd, who eventually could move to tight end in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, likely will be given at least a season to develop as a wideout.

So the rookies’ versatility might not be on display this season — but their ability to do so much speaks to the skills that made them attractive.

For his part, Samuel, 5-foot-11 and 214 pounds, is built like a running back. And he’s known for moving like one after receptions, which is why the Gamecocks gave him 25 carries in his career. Last year, Samuel accounted for 67 percent of his receiving yards (592 of 882) after the catch, according to Pro Football Focus. In addition, he forced 21 missed tackles, a figure that tied for the fourth best among wideouts in his draft class.

“He can catch the ball and break away,” general manager John Lynch said. “He’s a thick guy. Not overly tall, but I think he plays big. He’s strong, but he’s got juice to pull away from people and he can break tackles.”

Said Shanahan: “It hurts for people to tackle him. It doesn’t hurt him as bad.”
