These are 10 movies that I doubt appear on anyone's "best" lists, but when I'm clicking through channels, I just can't seem to pass by w/o watching for at least a few minutes.

Warriors, Red Dawn, Princess Diaries, Zombieland, Small Soldiers, My Cousin Vinny, Heaven is Real, Mr Deeds, Happy Gilmore, Gangs of New York.

Not sure if by most people we mean just regular Joes or movie critics/movie lists?

1. The 400 Blows

2. The Best Years of Our Lives

3. Grapes of Wrath

4. Malcom X

5. Being There

6. The Passion of Joan of Arc

7. Rushmore

Hable Con Ella (Talk To Her) (2002)

Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)

Last Tango In Paris (1972)

The Producers (1968)

Ok- I'm treating this as movies that aren't necessarily on anybody's top 10 lists- either critics or popular vote. and since I'm not taking much time with it, it's the first 10 that come to mind that fit that description- not really my actual top 10 (which would take some time to sort out- time I don't have).

Diva

Atlantic City

Strozcek

The Inlaws

Flirting with Disaster

Hopscotch

True Lies

Thin Red Line

Hanna

A Woman Under the Influence

Serenity

Stargate

Coming to America

Mean Girls

Get Shorty

Jacob's Ladder
just posted this somewhere... love it.

Requiem for a Heavyweight
I loved Raging Bull- but this one is absolutely epic... the cinematography during the fight scenes is incredible.

Gattaca

Winter's Bone

 A Simple Plan
loved these. gattaca's art direction (I've always wanted a convertible citroen), the writing and command performances in winter's bone.

9. Get Shorty
nowhere near enough credit- a perfect comedy with action.

The Truman Show
might be better considered than others, but still a great idea told well.

5. Being There
one of my favorite movies- I should've remembered it for my own list.

Being John Malkovich (1999)

Buttpirates4: The Wreckening (1996)
loved malkovich on every level. and I didn't think they could up the ante from buttpirates3: pacific fissures... but wow, was I wrong.

Hard.  Like others have said, do we treat this as Average Joe, or critic list?   My guess would be that either way it would begin and end with my boner for 1997 movies and sprinkle in a couple others that stick out.

The Sweet Hereafter

Jackie Brown

Starship Troopers

The Ice Storm

The Killing (Kubrick)

Amores Perros

Kingpin

The Cable Guy (last 2 are 2 of my top comedies, but don't think many would have them nearly that high)

The Thin Red Line

Before Sunset (thought about cheating and putting in the whole trilogy, but this is my favorite of the 3).

ETA:  Requiem for a Dream should be in there too, just not sure what I would take off.

Roadhouse

The early catalog of the anal sluts series.  The latter part get's quite hacky and uninspired IMO.

Edit: didn't notice I was late on the anal sluts/butt pirates joke   :kicksrock:

No Roadhouse?

Glory
Donnie Darko
Jacob's Ladder
Talk Radio
Blue Velvet
Shallow Grave
Diner

I concur with the Glory pick.  I'd swap Blue Velvet out for Mulholland Drive.  No hay banda.

This is a tough one (I'm excluding Glory because I've seen it mentioned twice, so may be too well-liked to qualify).  My attempt:

  • The Lavender Hill Mob
  • The Man in the White Suit
  • Kind Hearts and Coronets (Alec Guinness Ealing trio off the bat)
  • A Shot in the Dark
  • Miller's Crossing
  • A Face in Crowd (watched this for the first time for the KP polls and shot up my list)
  • Paths of Glory (may be borderline eligible here)
  • Out of the Past
  • ****
  • Josie and the #####cats (a couple of mindless ones that I love to round out)

I used "favorite", not "best"...didn't want to get into a discussion about what "best" means...I've seen that rabbithole playout a million times in the FFA.
The film I listed first was Leaving Las Vegas, my personal #3 overall movie.  However, it is so draining to watch that I've only seen it a few times to see if it holds up (it does).  So I went "best", not "favorite" - otherwise I would have listed a lot of guilty pleasure movies that I've seen a dozen times or more but even I couldn't argue their merit as Top 25 ATG movies.  Flash Gordon, The Last Dragon, Knock Knock, etc.

No wrong play though.  This is a fun thread so enjoy it in whatever manner you like.

99% whittles the list down pretty far. Be that as it may...

Brief Encounter

All The Kings Men

In A Lonely Place

The Wages of Fear

Judgement At Nuremberg

Duel

Breaker Morant

Silverado

Tucker: The Man and His Dream

Stick It

I had to remove All The Kings Men, The Innocents, A Face In The Crowd, and The Devil's Advocate to get to 10.
