30. Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around Fell in Love

  from 1976, and it still gets its fair share of air play decades later.  56 Million Spotify play for an old song like this is impressive.  This was also included in the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack.  It features Mickey Thomas (later with Jefferson Starship) with an excellent vocal performance.

29. Billy Vera and the Beaters - At this Moment

 This song blew up in 1987.  Just a great great soulful performance.  30 plus years and I have not tired of this.  When the song starts to play, you can’t help but to stop and listen.  (Some may nitpick about a song by BV and the beaters that scraped the 40 at 39, but not every song that touches 40 IMHO is a hit...20 is more in the ballpark, but 30-40 are proabably in low rotation for a week or two before hitting or missing and dropping off of the charts)

OK, so, in true Tim's rules fashion, this peaked eight months before the end of the ‘90s, but there’s no way I could leave off what is either the worst catchy song or the catchiest bad song of the last 20 years … possibly both. Everything about the three minutes in the above link - the lyrics that will literally make you laugh out loud; the hilariously awful video featuring a group of dime-store Spice Girls alternately throwing up their fists, poorly executing bad choreography, and rolling down grassy hills; the song bridge featuring (for no particular reason and completely out of place with the rest of the song) a random Irish jig - is soooo bad it’s great. You’ll be hearing these girls in your sleep tonight and I offer NO APOLOGIES.

25 John Stewart - Gold

 I struggled a bit with the OHW label, as Stewart did have a couple of songs from the album hit the top 30, but they seem completely not memorable.  They have a minimal presence on YouTube and other platforms.  If you are a purist, then pretend I nominated Love Hurts by Nazereth or something.  Lindsey Buckingham producing Stevie Nicks in background vocals...although the guitar sounds like Buckingham, sources say it was Stewart on this track...Stewart had previously been part of the Kingston Trio and this song featured on the pilot episode of Solid Gold. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-CJji921gM

 
24 Tonic - If You Could Only See

 the last 90s was weird in pop music...so many pop melodies propped up against the thick distorted guitar sound from the grunge era...it seemed to produce a few of these OHWs...

 
 Considered a couple of other songs, but both have already been discussed and I ended up with a classic record from Steve Martin about an ancient Egyptian

Yep. Ended up basically being Thomas's audition to replace Marty Balin in Jefferson Starship.

Always been a big Carrack fan. Liked his contributions to Squeeze and Mike + The Mechanics. Did some good work in Spin 1ne 2wo. Some of his solo work was a bit hit or miss. Also toured with Roger Waters and sang some Pink Floyd hits (Breathe, Hey You, Have A Cigar, and Money to name a few).

John Stewart, who regards Buckingham as "the only genius I've ever worked with in the studio." The former one-third of the Kingston Trio recounts, "Lindsey came down when we were doing the mix, and he was turning all the pots, layering the guitars. I was watching him and I said, 'Lindsey, some time you've got to tell me what you're doing.' He said, 'I'm turning the knobs till it sounds right.' A few people I know of really know how to make that mystical 'thing' happen with a record. Brian Wilson is one; Lindsey Buckingham is the master at it." (Ironically, Stewart, an acoustic folkie for twenty years, began playing electric lead guitar by listening to Lindsey's work before discovering that Buckingham had in fact learned to play acoustic guitar listening to Stewart's records with the Kingston Trio. "I got the Fleetwood Mac album," Stewart recalls, "and something about it sure sounded familiar." The one-note solo on Bomb's Away's top ten single "Gold," while it is one of the best examples of the "Lindsey Buckingham guitar style," was actually played by Stewart.)

Love "Hearts". The lyrics are a little cheezy, but Balin just reaches someplace way deep down in his soul with his delivery here.

He also alternated playing Tempted on the first leg and How Long on the second leg of Eric Clapton’s 2013-2014 tour. 

 
20 Rednex - Cotton-Eyed Joe

 I expect this one to garner a lot of hate, perhaps rightly so.  Its’s  unlikely soundscape and subsequent popularity are of respect.

The band is more popular overseas, but 5hey did have this one ubiquitous hit in ‘95.  A more standard song by them is “Wish You Were Here” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FwmM93jgUo which has been covered by Ritchie Blackmore’s neo-Renaissance Band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7h_FHbVHZs, which is better IMHO.

i’m sure there is a black eyed Joe reference to be somewhere, but I’m lost for words...

It's called Home and it may be the worst major-label album of the decade, right up there with the Spin Doctors' Turn It Upside Down. "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is the best song on there by a wide margin. Then again, the competition is stuff like "I Can Wait", which is ostensibly a Dr. Kervorkian metaphor, except it contains highly metaphorical lines like - and I swear I am not making this lyric up - "She turned to close the door and I / Assisted in her suicide".

It's  :lmao:  terrible.

I will have to check that out, just for lols, if nothing else...but I stand by that BaT’s is a well-crafted pop song....lightning in a bottle that defines the OHW

:X  My feelings about this song aren't quite to the Krista "Breakfast at Tiffany's" level, but it's close.

It didn't help that my freshman roommate in college was from Texas and loved Edie Brickell, so I was subjected to this song about 300 times in a nine-month span.

In my dorms in college, you could hear what was going on in the next room through the electrical outlet.  My neighbor on the other side of the wall started every single day off with Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistable" at full blast.  So that's how my day started too, for a whole semester.  I loathe that song to this day, decades later.

I remember getting woken every morning to the Gin Blossoms’ “Hey Jealousy”...it was at least a decade before I was could bear listening to that song...

This is the definition of guilty pleasure for me.  It is one of those songs that brings back such strong memories of a certain time and place that you enjoy listening to it everytime you hear it while simultaneously being over aware of how bad of a song it truly is, yet singing along to it word for word (sometimes just in your head).
