This board has gone list happy, especially when it comes to music.  That's not totally surprising because the Internet loves lists.  I don't dislike lists or the people who make them.  Left brained people need ways to categorize and rank objects into an orderly numeric structure. It's probably purely coincidential that the increase in lists coincides with the slow decline of Western democracies toward authoritarianism but that's a topic for another forum.

We used to do a lot more drafts around here. I could give you ten reasons why drafts are better but that would just be a list.  So I'll just stick with just two (or three).  Drafts are a communal and organic activity that take unpredictable turns.  Lists on the other hand simply follow the author's predetermined path, unless as I suspect sometimes, he or she is just winging it as the list counts down.

For the uninitiated, a Genrepalooza is a song draft format with categories selected randomly from a set determined before the draft.  We did two such drafts in 2017 (GP 1 https://forums.footballguys.com/forum/topic/755718-genrepalooza-whoa-oh-ohhh-listen-to-the-music/?tab=comments#comment-20084461 and GP  2 https://forums.footballguys.com/forum/topic/761716-genrepalooza-ii-heres-where-the-story-ends/?tab=comments#comment-20525347). Both were fun and went on for over 40 rounds and nearly 100 pages.  I still listen to some of the resulting collaborative playlists.

GP 3 will focus on songs of the 21st Century (2000 to present).  I realize this will exclude some drafters who stopped listening to new music when the Spice Girls broke up the first time.  There hopefully will still be enough interest to get this rolling.  Otherwise, this board can return to its regularly scheduled lists.

This draft is a minipalooza since it's limited to a subset of recorded music.  I've slightly optimized the rules using to counter the fragmentation and segmentation of music since 2000.  There will only be twelve categories (revised 18 April) unless we think of more good ones before the draft begins.

  1. Rock:  Default category for an archaic form of music that was popular among Caucasians in the late 20th Century
  2. Rap:  Hippity hop (Trap too I guess)
  3. R&B:  includes Neo Soul and Trap if that's your jam
  4. Country:  Lil Nas X and a bunch of folks with cowboy hats
  5. Dance/Electronic:  Thump thump thump thump thump (now with remixes)
  6. Punk/Emo/Hardcore/Metal/Screamo/Cookie Monster/Grover
  7. Acoustic/Folk/Folktronica/Chillwave/Dream Pop/Kermit/Beaker
  8. Pop:  No specific chart requirements but it should sound poppy
  9. None of the Above:  Catch-all category including Jazz, International, Classical, Spoken Word, etc.
  10. Female:  Principal singer was born with two X chromosomes
  11. Covers:  A cover version of a song originally performed by another artist
  12. Old Fart:  21st Century song by an artist who released a record prior to 1990

Before the draft, each drafter gets to choose one home category, that can be used in any or all rounds of the draft.   Home categories aren't exclusive; everybody can choose Rock if they want (as I expect many to do).  The home category provides a safety net so no drafter is ever forced to pick from an unfamiliar genre.

Other than that, the dice will function similarly to previous Genrepalooza drafts. I will do dice rolls to select the other two open categories for each round.  For example, if Country and Covers are rolled in round #1, the draft can choose a song for either of those categories or their home category.  We'll keep drafting until each category has been rolled twice which could be as few as twelve rounds or as many as infinity.  Realistically, I expect the draft to last about 25 rounds but nobody knows but the dice.

There will be a Google sheet to keep track of picks. While this is technically a list, it's a necessity to hold chaos at bay.  Each genre will get its own collaborative playlist (Spotify's term, not mine).  There will also be a few other rules regarding eligibility that can wait for now.

Is Folk/Americana worthy of a category and if it isn't, do I draft it in acoustic, rock, or country? and is the answer to question two yes.

I also kind of want to make the argument that for this particular era, indie rock should get it's own category to itself... or maybe a dance/punk category for @rockaction

:lmao: I'm pretty sure that in one two-sentence burst you've referenced at least four separate FBG sub-forums.

I have absolutely no idea how this works, much less experience with this format, but what the hell, I'm in.

I like broader more inclusive categories.  Folk, Americana, Country, Bluegrass, etc. have the same roots.

Since we're dealing with a smaller date range and some drafters may be a bit out of their element, I'd like to try to keep the number of categories at around twelve.  If the consensus is to nix some of the oddball ones I proposed, we can roll that way.

And I'm basically trying to add categories to make the draft go longer :stirspot:

This thread needs more testimonials from GP vets about how these are the bestest drafts ever.

Thanks to a jam-up en route to work I was treated to two hours of The Pulse™ today. By the time the draft rolls around you’re gonna be reading so many “his musical recall’s in the best shape of his life” puff pieces on me it’ll make you quiver.

Had to skip a bunch of the recent music drafts, and shamefully lurched towards the finish line in some of the ones I did take part in , buuuuuuuut I'm not swamped with work right now* so count me in.

How long is the average time on the clock?

I have never been in a draft here - and - I am more of a pre-2000 music knower - both of which could be taxing.

However, I want to get involved in music drafts & I gotta start somewhere.

I would also need to improve my understanding of the various categories - not sure I could place songs properly, at the moment.

Anyways, if all this is acceptable, then I would join.

Usually it just turns into everyone makes 1 pick in the AM and one in the PM with no real order or clock enforced

OK - if the other conditions / issues I listed are acceptable, then count me in.

Heh - I'm still doin' that Mad Men - promise - but, I just keep spreadin' myself thin with all the great content going on here and with GoT.

That's one a my biggest issues - tryin' to stuff too much into my mouth at one time. Twice a day picks, should give me plenty of time to research and learn - I hope.

Is this because you would only be able to chose covers of Beatle's songs? ;)

I'd like to get this started on Thursday and hopefully suck some people into the maelstrom of draft momentum.

If anybody has any suggestions about different categories, please feel free to throw them in.  From past drafts, I think less ambiguous categories work better both for civil discussion and cohesive mixes.
