Notre Dame in Paris is on fire

Recommended Posts

Some of the wooden beams supporting the roof date back to the original construction in the 12th & 13th century.

Wow, what a tragic disaster.  Beautiful landmark, am going there in two weeks.

Well, probably not there specifically anymore.

This sucks. Amazing that it has stood for so long with flammable materials.

I can't make this up.

@NotreDame: A clarification: A fire is currently burning at @notredameparis, not the University of Notre Dame. Our prayers are with all those involved.

We have a Notre Dame seminary here, it’s an old big building and that was my first thought. This was unimaginable.

There's a fascinating documentary called "Paris Rooftops:  Architectural Marvels" on Amazon Prime that spends the first 15 minutes or so on the roof of the cathedral.  There are other segments on the Dome of the Invalides, the typical Parisian slate & zinc mansard roofs and a modern structure.

That's what the speculation is at this point.

Me too.  On a trip last year, with a layover in Paris, we deliberately headed into the city to - in part - spend time in Notre Dame.  I love being in there.  :kicksrock:

My oldest daughter was breast-fed there in 1991, during a beautiful choir recital. It's truly a world treasure, along with the history of those who attending events.

From BBC's coverage:

"A spokesman for the cathedral said the whole structure was "burning".

"There will be nothing left", he said."

I'm just hating this.
