Do we think an openly gay man can get elected to the presidency in this country? (1 Viewer)

Buttigieg seems interesting,  mostly cause you guys seem to really like him so far.

But...

Are we ready for this as a country?  Could insert "black man" back when Mr. Obama ran, but is this a bigger hill to climb?

Additionally, is being a black female an even larger obstacle(if not Oprah).

Do you think the independents and those that didn't vote for Secretary Clinton would now vote for Buttgieg?

Depending on how he does in the coming months, I hate to say this could be the deciding factor but....this could be the deciding factor.

I think as long as he/she is genuine they can be elected. I think it is ok to talk about from time to time, but shouldn't be waved as a flag every time someone doesn't agree with an LGBTQ issue.

No.

Almost half the people still don’t support gay marriage.  I would say 25% consider it sodomy for religious reasons.  Even though many will say they are cool with a homosexual President in polls many will pick the other candidate on the secret ballot.

Yes.   We voted a black man president.  We would have voted a female president if she could have gone from terrible to decent.  Sure, there will be people against but as a whole a gay man can win.  Hopefully he runs on issues and doesn't run on being gay though.

I think so..but so many middle eastern countries and even China are still pretty homophobic so not sure how that would work if Pete and the first man visit there.

Can an openly gay man be taken seriously by other countries.  PLEASE dont bash me for saying that.  This is a real question.  Muslim countries are clear in their hatred of homosexuality.

No, but that is what his/her cabinet will be for.

See?  That's what I mean.  If he cant run on being gay then we arent ready for it.  Period.

Europe has had several gay PMs. I actually think it's kind of a power move on our part.

Wrong again.

Gallup, 2018: 67% think same-sex marriage should be legal

Also, the % for independents is much closer to the Democratic number than it is to the Republican number. That would indicate that conservative independents are more likely to support it.

(Even the majority of Fox Watchers support gay marriage.)

Also, the strongest opposition is confined to states that are already so red that it wouldn't affect the Presidential race (see here).

When you have the force of the American economy and military behind you, I don't think sexuality matters in the slightest.
Disagree with force.  My brother in laws wife is catholic...she hates Trump with a passion.  I asked her opinion 5 minutes ago. She said she wouldnt vote for Buttigieg if you put a gun to her head.

She said "it's wrong and just too weird "

I meant in dealing with international politics

Thanks.

The country is still not electing a gay president.

this is going to sound horrible, and i don't mean any malice by it:

i think Mayor Pete could get elected, and one of the reasons is that he doesn't - at least publicly - take on the effeminate affectations of some gay men. as it plays to an electorate, i think it would matter to some people.

Its not horrible nor does it have to have malice to be said.  Just because we are talking about it doesnt mean were homophobic

Right.  Again. Polls mean zippo. Polls are worthless.  I will say this everytime some one posts poll results.

Ever watch House?  Everyone lies.
I have no doubt many people would not vote for someone who is gay but those people are also unlikely to vote Democratic in the first place.

So if he wins the nomination does trump get reelected. Cause that's what matters

Beats me that is way too far away. The biggest issue Pete would have is with the black Democratic base which tends to be more conservative and more religious.

He kissed his partner on the cheek at yesterday's announcement. I would advise him not to refrain from showing that kind of emotion as a contrast to the current couple in the WH, and the 1992-2000 couple.

Is he gay?  Didn’t know that or frankly care.   I wouldn’t vote for him because he’s Democrat. Don’t care what he does in private. I’d vote for a gay republican if he was on the ticket.

Eh, the First Lady did a lesbian photo shoot, didn’t seem to matter.

You know what? At this point I think I might want to find out.

If Trump wins again so what? It’s only 4 more years. The world won’t end. Besides we’re heading for a permanent Democratic majority anyhow.

Let’s see if we’re ready for this.

I hate to say it but I actually don't think so. While I would vote for him I think the Dems are going need help from Independents and some never Trumpers to defeat Trump and that is where the problem would be. I've said it way too often here but you need to come up with a candidate that can win some purple states to defeat Trump

While it should matter exactly zero percent unfortunately the Trump years have proven we are not there yet as a country.

At 43 I would say yes in my lifetime though.

Yes, this will likely be a factor in the primary for him. I’m not sure about the general. Not that African Americans would vote for Trump but turnout might be lower.

Catholic, Mormon, actor, war hero, folksy, drawl, articulate, draft dodger, gay, doofus, shrill, black, white,  female, orange ... doesn't matter. Recent history shows that we will vote and justify our vote by the tens of millions for anyone if the time is right and mood grabs us. If the nation thinks that Pete's message is resonating in the moment then he's a serious contender. Honestly,  if 128 million of us collectively went to bat for for Trump and Hillary, I'm pretty sure our not so delicate standards can handle Pete.

While I understand what you’re saying that’s not how I took RWs statement.

Issues and ideas should always be at the forefront.  Running on being gay or black or female or... is always going to be a mistake.  Running on how you will run the country has to be the focus.

Before the 2016 election I said over a couple dozen times in the FFA that Bernie Sanders would never be elected President because he was an avowed Socialist and I kept linking this yearly Gallup poll that showed being a Socialist was the biggest disqualifier or deal breaker as far as voting for a candidate for POTUS.

I feel the same way this year about Mayor Pete and it is not because I don't agree with his positions. Being openly gay will cost him single digit percentage of votes in rust belt and toss up states. It will be another close election and even if it is only 2-3% that won't vote for him because he is homosexual, that is the ball game right there.

I am a progressive but I am also a realist.

I’m not so sure about that, and if not the world, maybe Democracy is permanently effected. At any rate, my psyche cannot handle a President Trump until 2024. The thought makes me sick to my stomach. If Pete is the best person to take the job then so be it.

To be honest I don’t think Trump has much of a shot no matter who he runs against. Karl Marx could rise from the grave, have a sex change operation, and run on a platform of free abortions during the 9th month of pregnancy and I’d still give him (her?) a decent shot of beating Trump. That’s what a consistent unpopularity over 50% will do to you.

But if he wins he wins. Our democracy won’t be permanently hurt. We can and will fix whatever damage he does.
