I know there is a thread, but I tried searching, with no success. 

My current suit is one my father bought me when I was 19. I’m now 46. The last time I wore it was a funeral 11 years ago and I couldn’t even zip all the way up and had to rely on my belt to keep my pants on and jacket to cover this mess.

For potential job interviews and general use, where should I get a new suit or two?

 
Has anyone used Indochino? 

I've heard it advertised on the Tony Kornheiser show. Not sure of the quality. He does have a link for a discount.

 
Get a decent wool suit from men's warehouse, have it properly tailored and you will be fine.

Just to avoid the sticker shock. Tailoring can be really expensive.

 
Is there a place you can rent suits? Like tuxedos?

Would that be a good business model?

How much would you spend to rent a nice fitted up to date suit?

Wedding?

Funeral?

Job interview ?

Instead of busting out the same dam 2 or 3 outdated suits you've ownerd since 2003 that barely fits your fat ### you can rent a nice trendy fitted suit for the night.

I'm not sure how much time you have. Or how you feel about online purchases. But, I bought a bespoke suit about 4-5 years ago from an Ebay seller. I think it was around $150. They give you a chart and have you enter your measurements. (you can also go to a tailor to be measured) It took about 3-4 weeks to receive, but it was the best fitting suit that I've ever had. They have a lot of fabric and custom choices. I also bought a couple of bespoke dress shirts as well.

This is very cool. I think it would take me an hour to Google what half of the customization options are. Quality is solid?

 
First, go somewhere and get your measurements taken. That's step 1.

This may sound crazy, but I would check your local Goodwill. Finding a full suit can be difficult at some of them as they often just divide them into separates, but you can find some downright steals.

Look for something that is your size and try it on to check the fit. Check carefully for any stains or damage. Small tears at seams can be fixed, so don't worry about those too much. Look for 100% wool. Avoid polyester linings. If you find something, have it dry-cleaned and find a tailor to have it tailored to you.

People don't wear suits a lot anymore and there are some really nice suits out there at re-sale shops. (I've seen suits that I know retailed for $1,200-1500 for $15 at my local Goodwill)

And if you're only planning on having the 1 suit, make it a charcoal suit. It works in pretty much any situation requiring a suit. It can go more casual, and it can go formal. Plus, you can wear just about any color shoes with then as well.

Couple of my friends at my firm use it. The suits look pretty nice. Probably going to use it for a new brown suit. Mind linking the discount?

There are different levels of fabric that probably add to quality. I only wear mine a few times a year. So, for what it cost, it was well worth it. I was skeptical at first. The craftsmanship is good. I think a good fitting of lesser material is going to look better than a bad fitting suit of high quality material. 

I'd suggest ordering some dress shirts first to see if you like the quality and craftsmanship.

Last suit I bought was in 2003. It's time to get a new one. I do have two sportcoats.

Burlington was my go-to store for business wear until 3-4 years ago, as it was pretty common to find screaming deals on decent labels. As of late they’ve basically become a Kohl’s clone. Larger quantities of fewer, mid-range brands at “meh” prices. 

I’ve gotten my last couple of suits from the clearance section at Nordstrom Rack during Clear the Rack days. A few months ago I paid under $200 for a midnight blue Ike Behar that retails for about 8x that. If you’re looking a little higher-end and aren’t pressed for time to get what you need / want it’d be my advice.

Burlington is fine and yes, it is not the store that it used to be before ownership changed.  Tailoring thought is still the same.

 
There is really only one moderately priced suit that I consider worth it and it's the JCrew Ludlow.

They are very well made and have the modern, but not too modern look.  There isn't even a close second place in its price range if you care about quality.

Are you in the suit industry or something? Work for GQ and assemble some of those collages of similar looking suits at vastly different price points?

If so, cool, but if not...talk about a random flex. Of the dozens (hundreds?) of mass produced suits, you can unequivocally state that only one particular label of one particular brand is "worth it".

I put a lot of time into looking and know a lot of people that wear suits regularly both in and out of my profession.  In certain professions, it's a well discussed topic, so not as outlandish as you seem to think it is.  But go ahead to Men's Warehouse...I'm sure that's more your speed.   :thumbup:

J Crew isn't bad at all. It's comparable to most any average department store suit you'll find. it's always on sale, too, but you'll need to go for tailoring like the department store ones. SuitSupply doesn't go on sale often - only 1x a year really - but that sales gives you a better suit for what you'd spend on Crew even on sale. I'll also make a reco for this Canadian shop I have ordered from for a few years called Spier & McKay. Little better pricing for suiting than SS and they've got nice shirts too. Bonobos also makes a decent suit weight suit that is good to go off the rack because Bonobos is careful about fitting/sizing.

We have both Bonobos and Suit Supply in my area and was unimpressed with both...I'll give suit supply another go though, that's the second time I've heard it favorably mentioned.

I wouldn't bother with Bonobos for any suiting other than summer suits. I don't bother with much tailoring with something like that. You can get a suit separate from them instead with their focus on sizing/fitting and get away with a better looking off-the-rack look. Never would think about going to them for other suiting. They do okay with their shirts, I guess, but I haven't bought anything from them recently. SS does better fabrics, construction for their lines than their price point but especially at their big sale. I wouldn't try Indochine because I have heard their QC is not reliable. I had really good experiences with Spier & McKay, starting with their shirts and getting a nice deal on a suit last year. I'm picky with suits because I'm at 6'4 (42L) and sizing is tricky.

I returned my suit supply effort.  Really felt and looked cheap imo.

I've been to the store in McLean, VA but have not tried to buy it from their website (I've never bought a suit online).

They're on the lower spectrum of pricing for suits but the quality makes a good buy.  These are good "every day" suits. 

 
Decided to give Indochino a try. The suit came today. It is a nightmare. I had my wife do the measurements.. twice.. to be sure we were good. 

The pants waist and length are good but through the thighs... holy crap  - unless you have chicken legs they look like 70's porn pants. I run and workout so I have bigger thighs, but these are comical.. and same for the sleeves  - I can get on the jacket on but it is way too small through the chest and shoulders and even the arms - how the heck do you get a suit that is way too tight through the arms?  I am fit and dont have chicken arms but wow,.... ill update here on how they handle the return and reshipment

don't they have stores that they recommend for measurements? one provider, i can't recall for sure, did something like that. they had a sense of how they cut their suits and could make adjustments and/or recommendations. they may charge more for that though. also, did you account for the suit cut itself? some styles lean more modern (ie, trim) like shirts in their cut. i have heard these stories about Indochino  handiwork along with Combatant Gentleman or whatever.

 
Step one: find a good tailor 

Step two: check Nordstrom rack or Saks off 5th for previous season deals on super nice brands. 

Step three: have tailor fit it to you like a glove 

Step four: don’t gain a #### ton of weight like I did last time.  

This is the best way to wear thousand to two thousand dollar suits for 3-800 bucks. 

 
I have an Indochino tux that fit great. Needed a few minor alterations that were covered with the alteration credit they included with the suit.

Other than that, I’ve got about 10 suits that came from either Nordstrom Rack or J Crew. Agree on the importance of getting them tailored.

Mostly posting to say that I hate charcoal suits. They’re soooo boring.

 
If you live in NYC area, you can get a quality suit from Century 21 at a very reasonable price.

eta: just saw you're in MN.  But you can check for a comparable discount store there too.  🙂
