How do the number of options compare to the past?  I was just looking for some deeper sleepers that I like, and noticed Jordan Scarlett, KeeSean Johnson, Hunter Renfrow, and Rashard Higgins among those who did not make the cut.
I really wish there was a write-in option for players who don't make the cut.  Example - Jesse James.  How is there no Detroit TE available in the list?!?  I would take 40-400-4 floor for $2.

My for sure is Chris Carson.  I don't see how he's not on my team at that price.  Rashaad Penny doesn't scare me too much considering how well and often this team should run the ball and Pete Carroll's tendencies to use what works over using someone based on their draft value/contract amount.
I have them both here and another league.  I'm hoping for a Larry Czonka, Mercury Morris type of deal.  Not too much to ask for is it?

My first pass through.  I typically have a roster in the range of about 27 players but that doesn’t seem feasible this year.  Didn’t really look at K or D yet those are just placeholders.

Just wondering - why $19 on D's?  Curious to know your reasoning, thanx.

The prices are different this year and that's my first look at it. Honestly don't know who to get at RB/WR for $4 that I like. I can't state this enough but getting Murray/Baker at these prices is the biggest advantage I see in this contest.

QB - Jameis Winston - TB/7 - $13
QB - Nick Foles - JAX/10 - $8
RB - Saquon Barkley - NYG/11 - $36
RB - Christian McCaffrey - CAR/7 - $35
RB - LeVeon Bell - NYJ/4 - $29
RB - Darrell Henderson - LAR/9 - $15

PK - Steve Hauschka - BUF/6 - $3
PK - Greg Joseph - CLE/7 - $3
TD - Cincinnati Bengals - CIN/9 - $3
TD - New York Jets - NYJ/4 - $3

QB - I'm all in on Jameis, but could only afford Foles as his backup.                                                                                                                                                                                            RB - Balls to the wall with 3 studs.  Henderson will be increasing his role as the season goes on.                                                                                                                                          WR - Funchess was a target before the contest started, and I was happy to see him at only $10                                                                                                                                        TE - Barring unjury, Kelce will be worth his high price.  Wanted Mark Andrews as backup, but settled for Hurst.                                                                                                               K & D - Two cheap ones with differing byes

First draft:

 QB - Baker Mayfield - CLE/7 - $19
QB - Dak Prescott - DAL/8 - $12

Dak is one of my few locks. Right now I'm going with Baker but might need to add a 3rd defense which would probably mean trading Baker for Mariota, foles and a defense.

RB - Nick Chubb - CLE/7 - $25
RB - Mark Ingram - BAL/8 - $20
RB - Damien Harris - NE/10 - $10
RB - Carlos Hyde - KC/12 - $9
RB - Alexander Mattison - MIN/12 - $6

Meh. Needs work but okay for a first draft.

WR - Amari Cooper - DAL/8 - $24
WR - D.J. Moore - CAR/7 - $20
WR - Dante Pettis - SF/4 - $16
WR - Golden Tate - NYG/11 - $13
WR - Trey Quinn - WAS/10 - $6
WR - Equanimeous St. Brown - GB/11 - $4

I like the top 3. Not sure about the rest. Actually I am sure, that I'll be changing them.

TE - O.J. Howard - TB/7 - $18
TE - Jared Cook - NO/9 - $17
TE - Chris Herndon - NYJ/4 - $8
TE - Rob Gronkowski - NE/10 - $5

Aside from gronk, this group is locked.

PK - Wil Lutz - NO/9 - $6
PK - Daniel Carlson - OAK/6 - $3
PK - Austin Seibert - CLE/7 - $3

🤷‍♂️
TD - New York Jets - NYJ/4 - $3
TD - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - TB/7 - $3

Cheap, almost certain to pick up a 3rd.

"Locks" - Dak, Cooper,  Pettis, OJ, cook, Jets D.

:oldunsure:

First move - Tate for funches and the 9ers defense

Early effort.  Will change a fair bit I am sure... the mid-range RBs and WRs are frustrating me.

So, what constitutes a good matchup for a defense in this contest?  Based on the contest scoring, you get 1 point for every sack, 2 points for a turnover (fumble recovery or INT), and 6 points for a TD.  TD's are just a happy bonus and are fluky, as well as fumble recoveries.  Sure, we can reasonably expect a defense like CHI to score more TD's and have more fumble recoveries, but we are not talking about the defense you are starting - we are talking about the team a defense will face.  In this case, the most reliable stats are going to be sacks and INT's.  Using contest scoring last year, there were 3173 defensive points scored: 1281 by sack (40%), 840 by INT (26%), 556 by FR (18%), and 498 by TD (16%).  To me, a good matchup is a team that allows alot of sacks, and throws alot of INT's.  Total yardage, points scored, etc, is all unimportant.

Based on the above, here are the 10 best matchups from last year, in order:  TB, SF, ARI, BUF, HOU, JAC, MIA, NYJ

Based on the above, here are the 10 worst matchups from last year, in order:  NO, NE, IND, BAL, KC, ATL, LAC, LAR

Offenses change from year to year, and some quite drastically.  But many remain the same, and have the same QB at the helm.  Let's use the 2 extremes as examples - NO and TB.  Drew threw 5 INT's and was sacked 17 times (Teddy & Taysom combined for 2 more INT's and 3 more sacks).  Jameis threw 14 INT's and was sacked 27 times (Fitz added 12 INT's and 14 sacks).  NO and TB project to be a similar offenses from last year, and I similarly expect them to be one of the toughest and one of the best matchups for 2019.

Day 2

QB - Mitchell Trubisky - CHI/6 - $12
QB - Kirk Cousins - MIN/12 - $12
QB - Ryan Fitzpatrick - MIA/5 - $6
RB - Todd Gurley - LAR/9 - $28
RB - Chris Carson - SEA/11 - $18
RB - Latavius Murray - NO/9 - $16
RB - Justice Hill - BAL/8 - $9

PK - Jason Myers - SEA/11 - $5
PK - Eddy Pineiro - CHI/6 - $4
TD - Houston Texans - HOU/10 - $6
TD - Tennessee Titans - TEN/11 - $5

I actually really like how this one turned out.

2 of your top 3 RBs share the same bye week and 3 of your top 5 WRs share the same bye week, as well as just having a ton of late bye weeks in general.  I don’t think this roster would have much of a chance to make it.

I just spent a few hours doing a deep dive into RB prices, and I think you may be right.  I overlooked Carson on my first go around, but then I laid out all the RB prices on an excel spreadsheet and he stood out.  He finished as RB15 last year, and is going at RB25/28 prices.  The top RB in the top running offense?  Sounds like a steal at $18.

Until Penny takes most of his touches.

Scoring will be down this year.  The shark move may be to roster them both.

Nothing that has happened so far suggests this.  Carson is outperforming Penny in camp so far.  Carroll is not the type to use a player just because of where they were drafted or how much they signed for.  He uses what is working.  Look back to Flynn vs. Russell to see this.  Penny will get his, but there are plenty of carries to be had on this offense for both of them.

Rostering them both is not a bad idea though.

Gotta start somewhere, right? I like taking RBs and handcuffs from early bye teams. Just feels like the safest way to hedge against injuries in the most injury prone position. Rest is just fliers for a best ball approach. I feel light on TE.

QB - Baker Mayfield - 19
QB - Sam Darnold - 9
QB - Derek Carr - 9
RB - Kerryon Johnson - 23
RB - Tevin Coleman - 18
RB - Jerick McKinnon - 15
RB - C.J. Anderson - 9
RB - Carlos Hyde - 9
RB - Tony Pollard - 4
RB - Frank Gore - 4
WR - Allen Robinson - 17
WR - Devin Funchess - 10
WR - Albert Wilson - 9
WR - John Brown - 9
WR - Marquise Goodwin - 8
WR - John Ross - 5
WR - Breshad Perriman - 5
WR - Willie Snead - 5
WR - Jakeem Grant - 4
WR - Chris Hogan - 4
TE - Jack Doyle - 10
TE - T.J. Hockenson - 10
TE - Jason Witten - 8
PK - Giorgio Tavecchio - 5
PK - Chris Boswell - 4
PK - Matt Prater - 4
TD - San Francisco 49ers - 3
TD - Cincinnati Bengals - 3
TD - New York Jets - 3
TD - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 3

Total value: 248

QB - Philip Rivers - 12
QB - Jimmy Garoppolo - 11
QB - Marcus Mariota - 8

Rivers always seems to finish top 10 and is priced too low with the potential of an extended MG3 holdout.  Garoppolo put up ridiculous stats when give the reins during the end of the 2017 season.  SF has added weapons and he looks like sneaky value.  Mariota has flashed in the past and does provide some value with his legs.

RB - Kerryon Johnson - 23
RB - Tevin Coleman - 18
RB - Austin Ekeler - 16
RB - Royce Freeman - 14
RB - Alexander Mattison - 6

Johnson should be several spots higher now that Riddick is out of town.  He could finish in the top 10 at RB.  Coleman is the healthiest back on the roster right now and was singled out by Shanahan.  Plus, he gives me the double-dip with Garoppolo.  Ekeler is the primary beneficiary of the MG3 holdout.  Unless he returns or LA brings in competition, he should be no worse than a high RB2.  Freeman should become the focal point of the Denver offense despite Lindsey's breakout last season.  I think Freeman is the better RB and the team will see that as well.  Mattison is a cheap shot at a good offense with an injury-prone RB the only thing in the way of a lot of touches.

WR - Tyreek Hill - 31
WR - Julian Edelman - 23
WR - Corey Davis - 15
WR - Emmanuel Sanders - 13
WR - Albert Wilson - 9
WR - Randall Cobb - 6

Tyreek is the ultimate bestball WR and should finish as a top-five WR if he can stay out of trouble.  Edelman is going to soak up most of Gronk's targets and might catch 100+ balls this year.  Davis seems like he's turning the corner and pairs up with Mariota for a double-dip.  Sanders should be at or near 100% by the start of the season and was headed for a career year before his injury last season.  Cobb and Wilson are shifty slot WRs that can pop off at any time and should see plenty of targets in their respective offenses.

TE - Hunter Henry - 17
TE - Darren Waller - 8

Henry seems poised to become Rivers' favorite target, especially without the specter of Antonio Gates to siphon away targets.  Rivers also loves big, athletic TEs and I can see Henry challenging for the #1 TE this season;  Waller has the talent to have at least as good a season as Jared Cook last season.  For $8, yes please.

PK - Graham Gano - 5
PK - Brandon McManus - 4

I mean, they're kickers.  Gano is as solid as they come and McManus is in the thin air.

TD - Houston Texans - 6
TD - Kansas City Chiefs - 5

Two defenses that will have the benefit of teams playing catch up.  More opportunities for sacks and INTs.

I might have to rethink the amount I have invested in the Chargers offense, but I like the start I have here.

2 of your top 3 RBs share the same bye week and 3 of your top 5 WRs share the same bye week, as well as just having a ton of late bye weeks in general.  I don’t think this roster would have much of a chance to make it.
There are a ton of late bye weeks in general involving the players I’m interested in. Hard to avoid unless grabbing players I’m less excited about. I honestly haven’t even looked at bye weeks for my completed lineups tho so that hasn’t even been considered.

He’s a lock already for me.

He’s a lock already for me.
I think I'm taking both Penny and Carson.  Seattle will be a top running team and both of their salaries together are less than Saquon and CMC.  If one of them gets hurt the other becomes a stud.  Real risky thing about it is taking that week 11 bye double whammy.

QB - Jameis Winston - TB/7 - $13
QB - Mitchell Trubisky - CHI/6 - $12
QB - Ryan Fitzpatrick - MIA/5 - $6
RB - Dalvin Cook - MIN/12 - $24
RB - Chris Carson - SEA/11 - $18
RB - Latavius Murray - NO/9 - $16
RB - Justice Hill - BAL/8 - $9
WR - Mike Evans - TB/7 - $27
WR - Julian Edelman - NE/10 - $23
WR - Cooper Kupp - LAR/9 - $20
WR - Curtis Samuel - CAR/7 - $12
WR - Geronimo Allison - GB/11 - $10
WR - David Moore - SEA/11 - $6
TE - Travis Kelce - KC/12 - $29
TE - Ricky Seals-Jones - ARI/12 - $5
PK - Jason Myers - SEA/11 - $5
PK - Eddy Pineiro - CHI/6 - $4
TD - Houston Texans - HOU/10 - $6
TD - Tennessee Titans - TEN/11 - $5

Every year I have gone mass quantity at WR. Instead I’m going quality this year. With only five receivers it’s important that they aren’t boom or bust because if they all bust at once you’re eff’d.

  • Mike Evans with a revamped TB passing attack and awful defense = money in the bank.
  • Edelman is as consistent as they get - in my league last year he had one game under 15 points. One. And no more Gronk.
  • Cooper Kupp would have been WR#2 in the entire league last year if he continued his average and did not get hurt. I think they pass more this year to save a couple touches for Gurley.
  • Curtis Samuel could be the #1 for Carolina. Newton had a bum shoulder last year so with him healthy I expect him to have one of his better years this year. Defenses will key in on CMC and make Newton’s arm beat them.
  • Geronimo Allison. This is the one most likely to change. Who is the #2 in GB? That is the question. I think Allison has a solid floor but his ceiling could be highly variable. Still not certain of this one as I type so it will most likely be changed 27 times.
  • David Moore could be the #1 for Seattle. Lockett isn’t a #1. It will prob be more like 1a and 1b but I think Moore competes for most WR fantasy points on the team.
Edit: 5 receivers turned into 6.

Week 12 is a pretty late week to take a goose egg at TE.  I would consider dropping Fitz (I think you are fine with Jameis and Mitch) and using the $6 to upgrade RSJ.  Good luck

Good catch! Didn’t notice the bye issue.

Edit: as an aside, I had records of every contest roster for the last 10 years or so and recently discovered that I lost all that data. Not sure if it can be recovered, but if anyone else has anything similar and wants to send me a data dump shoot me a message. :)
Update: I bit the bullet and re-compiled a database of all contest entries going back to 2007 (I think definitely remember that the contest existed before then but I can't find records of it on the site - will keep digging).  Anyway... trivia time!

Which player has appeared on the most contest entries ever?

Great question - I will throw out the first guess - Larry Fitzgerald

This is BY FAR the hardest contest to date.  This is iteration #1

QB - Mitchell Trubisky 12  Bye 6

QB - Dak Prescott 12  Bye 8

I love to go cheap at QB in this contest.  Like this combo, it has some upside and a decent floor.

RB - Kerryon Johnson 23  Bye 5

RB - Tevin Coleman 18  Bye 4

RB - Lamar Miller 17 Bye 10

RB- Austin Ekeler 16 Bye 12

RB pricing is brutal in this contest.  Love Kerryon at 23, and I think Coleman, Miller and Ekeler can give me a decent RB2 and sometimes even a flex score.

WR - Michael Thomas 32  Bye 9

WR - Robby Anderson 17  Bye 4

WR - Christian Kirk  15  Bye 12

WR - Dede Westbrook 13  Bye 10

WR - DaeSean Hamilton 7  Bye 10

WR - Chris Hogan 4  Bye 7

Went with one stud in Thomas, and spread it out with some upside and floor guys at mid/cheap price

TE - Travis Kelce  29  Bye 12

TE - Greg Olsen  10 Bye 7

TE - Mike Gesicki 8  Bye 5

Planting my flag with Kelce, he should be absolute stud in this format.  Olsen is done as an elite TE but he should get some decent games to give a flex score.

PK - Chris Boswell 4  Bye 7

PK - Dan Bailey 4  Bye 12

TD- Colts - 5 Bye 6

TD - Panthers -4  Bye 7

Only have 19 players, when I usually go with 22-24.  I haven't figured out how to get 2 studs and fill out 22-24 slots.  Pricing is really tough.

Not a fan of the RB corps you have chosen.  I like the Kerryon and Ekeler picks.  As for Tevin, I just think there is too much uncertainty on RB usage to spend that much dough.  It could be a flavor of the week approach in SF.  With Duke now in town, I am steering clear of Lamar for the contest.  I never thought Foreman was gonna make a comeback, but Duke may make it a true RBBC by midseason.  Miller's appeal has been his volume, and he may lose a bit of that.
