Last night at fireworks way up in Grand Marais MN there was a group of newly minted Americans watching fireworks, probably 15, holding an American flag with faces painted with flags chanting “USA USA USA”. That made me proud too. Welcome new American brothers!!

Snopes Admits Obama Built Cages for Immigrant Children

And the MSM is STILL erroneously using the 2014 photos of Obama’s kids in cages and saying they are from the present.

Quote

The Hill, a national political news outlet, erroneously tied a 2014 photo of migrant children sleeping in cages to a story about the current conditions of detention facilities at the border under the Trump administration.

The article in question was about a visit Democratic lawmakers paid to a Clint, Texas, Border Patrol station to investigate allegedly poor conditions in the detention center. A photo featured with the article on social media, however, showed conditions at a separate camp in Arizona in 2014 under the Obama administration, which was dealing with a flood of unaccompanied minors at the time.

In fact, the photo has been used so many times to dishonestly attack the Trump administration’s immigration policies, that the Associated Press wrote a fact check about the issue in May 2018.

“2014 photo wrongly used to hit Trump policies,” AP said, noting that the photos were taken by one of its photographers at the Customs and Border Protection Agency in Nogales, Arizona.

Looks like The Hill removed the pic, correctly.

- When will DC update their piece to reflect this?

I doubt that an update or correction will be done, so people can keep running with the Daily Caller article (as was done here) as proof of mainstream media bias against the Trump administration.

I hope soon.  Big picture, why is the MSM and continually trying to attribute these images of Obama putting kids in cages from 2014 to Trump?  AP even put this out last year and they still do it!

Quote

THE 2014 PHOTOS

—“Speechless. This is not who we are as a nation.” — Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa, former Los Angeles mayor now running for governor, referring in a tweet Sunday to photos showing young-looking immigrants in steel cages.

—“This is happening right now, and the only debate that matters is how we force our government to get these kids back to their families as fast as humanly possible.” — Jon Favreau, who was speechwriter for President Barack Obama, referring Sunday to the same photos.

THE FACTS: The photos, taken by The Associated Press, were from 2014, during the Obama administration, but were presented by liberal activists as if they showed the effects of Trump’s immigration policy now. Villaraigosa, Favreau and some others deleted their tweets when the mistake was pointed out.

They had linked to a June 2014 online story by The Arizona Republic titled “First peek: Immigrant children flood detention center.” The story featured photos taken by AP’s Ross D. Franklin at a center run by the Customs and Border Protection Agency in Nogales, Arizona. One photo shows two unidentified female detainees sleeping in a holding cell. The caption refers to U.S. efforts to process 47,000 unaccompanied children at the Nogales center and another one in Brownsville, Texas.

Many tweets used the hashtag “WhereAreOurChildren,” which grew out of testimony in April by a federal official that the U.S. government had lost track of nearly 1,500 unaccompanied minor children it placed with adult sponsors in the U.S.

Trump tweeted: “Democrats mistakenly tweet 2014 pictures from Obama’s term showing children from the Border in steel cages. They thought it was recent pictures in order to make us look bad, but backfires.”

First of all I agree about the point about AP.

This is the first instance of this I've seen since the dustup about it last year. IMO someone at The Hill should be held accountable about it because I agree it's way past the time a mistake could have been reasonably made.

I agree that it's pretty dumb that that picture is still being misattributed to Trump, especially when we knew the truth a year ago that it was taken during the Obama administration. It's also true that child separation occurred under Obama, another fact that some people have trouble coming to grips with. It didn't start under Obama, as some like to claim, but it did indeed happen. In fact it's been happening for decades. So why the big deal now? Why is Trump being singled out? Must be Trump Derangement Syndrome, am I right?

Let's hear President Trump speak on the matter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vjvkXcFnts

What is also true, according to an article linked in your PJMedia piece, is that Obama was facing an unprecedented influx of unaccompanied minors (and for which he rightly received criticism for not being better prepared):

Quote

It's turning into the largest influx of asylum seekers on U.S. soil since the 1980 Mariel boatlift out of Cuba.

Since October, more than 52,000 children — most from Central America and many of them unaccompanied by adults — have been taken into custody. That's nearly double last year's total and 10 times the number from 2009.

President Obama has called on Congress to supply nearly $4 billion simply to deal with the problem. In the meantime, U.S. officials are doing what they can to discourage Central Americans from sending their children in the false belief they will readily be admitted to live with relatives.

...the administration on Tuesday asked Congress for $3.7 billion to deal with the immigration crisis, as part of an "emergency" package of funds that would also help pay for Western wildfires. The money would be spent on additional Border Patrol manpower, detention facilities and more judges, while also improving care for children during the deportation process.

It's also true, according to a different link from your piece, that Obama never had a policy like Trump's Zero Tolerance Policy, which was designed specifically to increase child separation so their parents could be prosecuted with no exceptions:

Quote

In defending its “zero tolerance” border policy that has caused the separation of families, the Trump administration has argued that the Obama and Bush administrations did this too. That’s misleading. Experts say there were some separations under previous administrations, but no blanket policy to prosecute parents and, therefore, separate them from their children.

“Bush and Obama did not have policies that resulted in the mass separation of parents and children like we’re seeing under the current administration,” Sarah Pierce, a policy analyst with the Migration Policy Institute, told us.

...MPI’s Pierce said that the likely reason data aren’t available on child separations under previous administrations is because it was done in “really limited circumstances” such as suspicion of trafficking or other fraud.

I think Business Insider, you know the noted liberal fake news rag, sums it up nicely here: https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-says-obama-built-migrant-children-cages-2019-6

Quote

The Trump administration has often come under scrutiny for using the cages to detain migrants, though a lesser-known detail is that those same cages have been used for years, albeit under different circumstances.

Last summer, for instance, images went viral showing young migrant children lying sprawled on flimsy mattresses, caged behind the metal fencing. Though critics rushed to condemn the Trump administration, it quickly emerged that the images were from 2014, during the Obama administration, and that the children had arrived at the border unaccompanied and were awaiting processing in the facilities.

At the time, the Obama administration had been struggling to manage a major influx in unaccompanied Central American children arriving at the US-Mexico border.

As one former Obama official explained, "We didn't have enough shelter facilities, because we had a huge increase, so kids ended up piling up in Border Patrol lock-ups, which are no places for children."

Though the Obama administration faced criticism at the time for its treatment of migrant children, the Trump administration has come under more extreme scrutiny, largely due to the public outcry over last year's family separations.

Trump in his Telemundo interview sought to blame Obama for the family separations as well, but the Obama administration did not have a policy around large-scale separation of migrant families. The thousands of children separated from their parents last year were separated entirely due to Trump policies.

I applaud you for holding the media to account for using the wrong picture. I'd attribute it more to the rush to grab some anti-Trump headlines which are all the rage and generate clicks rather than some grand conspiracy, but maybe that's a distinction without a difference.  While I doubt they'd intentionally give Trump some more grist for his "fake news" propaganda, I think we can both agree that writing for clicks leads to shoddy journalism.

However, what I don't see is anyone holding the President to account for blaming Obama and his cages for the current crisis at the border which has nothing to do with the former President. What I don't see is anyone holding Trump to account for the dozens of times he's misidentified a picture to deceive the public (and which he did again this week).

At least take a moment to laugh at the funny ones, Like Trump creating fake Time magazine covers to hang at his golf courses, or the lengths the White House goes through to make his fingers look longer (and him not so fat).

Most importantly, I don't see anyone holding the right-wing media to account for the thousands of times (probably millions of times by now) they've intentionally misled people with real, honest to goodness bull####. Not by their customers anyway. How is it not blatantly hypocritical to holler about the inaccuracy of this one picture while blithely ignoring the voluminous examples that don't fit the same narrative?

If I found this to be the case for me I'd have to seriously take a step back and re-examine my approach to the news and how my perception was being warped. What kind of person wants to knowingly spread lies and deception, or if they found out they were would do nothing to stop it?

So while I'm glad "Snopes Admits Obama Built Cages for Immigrant Children", I long for the day when Trump admits that has nothing to do with how he is using them.

Maybe. I suppose that's what I should expect. But I still believe in America and that deep down one or two of these guys might start to feel a patriotic rumbling that putting one man over everything America supposedly holds dear is just too much to ask. Ask themselves a question or two. Investigate their sources. Look at what he's done instead of what he says he's done. They might never post, but they might start thinking.

The PSF has repeatedly been labeled a "left-wing echo chamber". I think there's some truth to that. I myself have been too dismissive of people who laud Trump's accomplishments, too judgmental of people who wear MAGA hats, and I'm as guilty as anyone of liking to read opinions that jive with my own point of view. But listening to my own thoughts echoed back at me gets old and doesn't really accomplish anything. I'm not saying Trump himself is worth taking seriously, but why people like and support him is and by casually blowing them off and everything they have to say is probably to my detriment.

What I love, or used to love, about FootballGuys was the smart people, eclectic topics, and differing points of view, where I would often find myself coming away from a thread having learned something. Oh, and the humor. This site has given me more laughs over the years than anything else on the internet.

But all those things seem to be fading away. Politics is toxic nowadays and it bleeds into everything. I guess it's much easier to judge, to get angry, and to point fingers. Much easier, at least, than listening. Or trying to form a nuanced point of view that doesn't paint everything in black and white.

I have to believe in America because I have to believe it's still possible to get this right. It's too important not to. If we don't then we're just like every other country and I seriously have to rethink what my next steps will be. I want to live in a place where ideas and collaboration and the power and ability of the human spirit are revered and I want that place to be here in the U.S.A. Maybe it's not anymore, but I'm not giving up until all hope is lost and the light fades to black, like the Terminator's red eye when he gets squished.

Maybe, in the middle of the liberal echo chamber, this thread proves to be the echoiest of them all and I'm stupid for thinking otherwise. I hope not but we'll see.

Well, that seems obvious.  We are at full employment.  A 50-year low.  His comparison timeline starts when we were still at 5.5%+ unemployment.

There is some thought that it was leaked by pro-Brexit people. Boris Johnson will argue that he has a great relationship with Trump which will be necessary for a new trade deal that Britain is counting on to ease the pain caused by Hard Brexit.

Seems far fetched to me but you never know.

Man it's everywhere.  There is another board out there...that would be termed a conservative echo chamber....that used to be a funny funny place--then politics took over.

And it lost all that fun.  Now it's just politics constantly...all the time.   At least this board has it's own politics board, but yeah..the funny is long gone.
