Montreal/Tampa Bay Rays? (1 Viewer)

So it begins (finally). Anyone else surprised they didn’t just move them permanently to Montreal? Why bother with this setup?

Yeah, they’re talking about this on the Indians radio feed. Why would EITHER city agree to build a stadium that’s going to be used half of the time? Who gets the playoff games?

Great questions. I think Montreal is just getting ready for the team to be there permanently. No idea how they can get a new stadium here as they’ve crashed and burned several times already.

Because they have maybe the greatest contract of all time that prohibits it. They also can’t talk directly to Montreal. This is all so very stupid.

Fair point. Just figured MLB would buy them out of their contract and move on.

“Manfred said the Rays are committed to playing at Tropicana Field through 2027, so the idea of a St. Pete/Montreal split-season would be more of a long-term concept”

good way way to pop some newspaper clicks on a Thursday tho

Wouldn’t the new city just pay off the Trop lease? Portland for example has a ton of cash ready.

They can’t even talk to another city. Remember how difficult it was for them to get the right to talk to Tampa?

Sounds like when Cleveland lost their NFL team to Baltimore. Wait until your former team wins a title and then they give you a crap team in exchange.

So is the 40 games in Montreal a way to circumvent “leaving”?
Montreal isn't building a new stadium for 40 home games and they're not getting a team without a new stadium. Also, if Tampa builds a new stadium, they're keeping the team for all 81 home games, this proposal never made sense.

It would be one of the dumbest proposals in pro sports history if it wasn’t such a blatant leverage play. I can’t believe some people still take it serious, that’s bizarre to me.

Mayor of St. Pete providing yet another justification for MLB to take the Rays elsewhere. Bravo!
