Whose movie career would you rather have than....... (1 Viewer)

Tom Cruise?  Put all the nonsense aside and look at the guys career - spans nearly 40 years.  I would say it's a top 3 career - probably top 2 and maybe even numero uno..

Mission Impossible 1-7

Risky Business

Edge of Tomorrow

Tropic Thunder

Minority Report

Jerry Mcguire

A Few Good Men

Rain Man

Top Gun

and a slew of other less notables.

He also works a ton and is so famous he can’t go anywhere. I would rather be like Daniel Day Lewis. Don’t work very often, lauded and respected, famous enough to get the perks when needed but not so famous that I would get harassed everywhere I go.
Brilliant answer.

Another response that challenges the OP is Sean Connery.  And that voice....

Honestly, I think I’d go with Jared Leto. Academy Award winner.  Overall, stars in quality films, but is more selective and isn’t grinding it out year-round for decades.  Sort of like a mini-Daniel Day Lewis, but has the added benefit of fronting an incredibly successful rock band. Yep, I’d go with Leto.

De Niro, Hanks and Pacino come to mind
I get that some have had better acting recognition for some of their films - but how long was Deniro's window of putting out good movies?  Has he done anything significant in the last 20 years?  I think you can say the same about Pacino.

Hanks I might agree is top 3.

Sure but part of it is your own personality. Cruise is perfect if you are a workaholic type.

Jared Leto isn't on the same planet as DDD

I can barely stand Cruise and dont like more than half those movies but i agree with your premise. he's has made the career, persona, fame, "art" & money he wanted with a low turkey ratio & without selling out

You also have to consider:

teen age heartthrob

good comedic work

some great action work

some great lines that are/were a part of pop culture

The difference here is DeNiro, Pacino and Hanks are actually great actors, while Cruise is not.  Cruise is a movie star, not a great actor, but he found a niche and has many a ton of money to give to his scientology cronies, so props to him.

I don;t know that is easy.  And not even sure he rates better.  Feel free to post a list of movies to support Hanks.
Saving Private Ryan

Forest Gump

Philadelphia

Apollo 13

A League of their own

Road to perdition

Bridge of spies

Castaway

Captain Phillips

The Green Mile

Catch Me if you can

Sully

a couple of solid rom coms in You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle

a handful of entertaining comedies in big, the burbs, splash, money pit and bachelor party

Hanks pretty easily
love him and even got the chance to get to know him a li'l bit early in his career so i've always rooted for him, but he str8up ruined Bonfire or the Vanities and the Dan Brown series for me and there have been a few others where he just didnt connect up the material. mad respect for getting things made that wouldnt have without him and for being one of the great Everyman actors of all time

Toy story 1-wherever they are now

I can't believe someone needs a Tom Hanks list.  His run of great flicks and performances in the 90's alone was unbeatable.
90's - you are talking two  plus decades ago.  I don;t need the list to know he's an accomplished actor - I am just not having a run of great movies in my head.  Plus it would help the argument if he did something in this century

Certainly not the first guy to pop into my head. But he is a good choice. While Cruise has a great book of work, I would hate having his level of celebrity.

How about someone like John Malkovic? Well respected. He's worked continuously. And he's had some iconic roles. But he can live his life fairly unbothered. I walked past him in Chicago a few years ago. No one was bothering him. I'm sure a lot of people didn't even know it was him. As we passed by each other I just nodded to him and he nodded back.

It's a good list - but it's also a bit dated.  I am not comparing them as dramatic actors - just in film career.  I think Hanks is a top 3.

Maybe Meryl Streep if I wanted to go penisless?

In what way?  Acting talent?  Of course not. My comparison had to do with the fact that he’s somewhat selective, doesn’t go for volume, and has been acclaimed in multiple films (winning an academy award).  His added bonus is he’s a rock star in addition to being an Oscar winner. He’s also super good looking with great hair.

Samuel L Jackson.

Started with bit roles in the 80s and now gets paid to laugh at Chuck Barkley in commercials and is arguably more iconic than Cruise is now.  Gets to stroll in for like 5 hours of filming in each of the Avengers movies and pick up a $5M check.  I certainly wouldn't mind his career right now.

As far as best career by acting credits?  Easily Hanks in my book.

Is that all?

James Stewart has to be a contender. War hero fighter pilot, Oscar and a resume of established classics:

Its a Wonderful Life, Rear Window, Vertigo, The Philadelphia Story, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Anatomy of a Murder, The Shop Around the Corner. Across every genre, he was in movies that stand as classics of that genre.

Let's not over-think this, it's De Niro.  Sure his last 20 years haven't been great but how can one argue with the first 35 years (i.e. equal to where Cruise is in his career)?

Compare the OP's list to:

Mean Streets

Godfather II

Taxi Driver

1900

Deer Hunter

Raging Bull

King of Comedy

Once Upon a Time in America

Brazil

The Untouchables

Midnight Run

Goodfellas

Cape Fear

A Bronx Tale

Casino

Heat

Jackie Brown

If you stop in 2000 that's where Cruise is today.  It likely Cruise may do better over the next 20 than De Niro did, but then we all thought Tiger would crush Nicklaus' majors victory total in the latter third of his career and we saw how THAT turned out.  And even if Cruise's next 20 greatly outshine De Niro's I'm not sure it'll be enough to overcome De Niro's opening 35 years.

As always, just my opinion.
