How do we define political terms??? (1 Viewer)

From multiple threads, it appears there is a large disconnect on what constitutes a moderate, a liberal, a conservative...or what is socialist, or far left or far right.

Is there some way we can together define this here so those terms have meaning?

I guess we would have to start with what is the middle?  What would be a current or past example(s)?

Or are we too far gone in our opinions to find that starting point?

No need to reinvent the wheel...use a dictionary

Though I will say, I think it's foolish to discuss what constitutes a moderate, liberal, conservative as a person.  The focus shouldn't be on people, it should be on the position IMO.  Generalizing that a person is any of those things just gets lost in translation and always will.

Not sure the purpose?

If a person is allowed to define their gender, why can't a person define their own political terms?

itons, do you sit around and dream up analogies that just don't work unless you're willing to get really deeply theoretical, or what? You've got to make some awfully big leaps about definitions to include both of those as analogous.

True but I think easier to visualize with and example of someone who espouses those beliefs.

Id disagree with part of that.  Libertarian for example...while further right traditional than the GOP on some issues, they are left of the GOP on a number of social issues as well.  Id say some of that applies fiscally more than socially.

In addition, that doesn't really define what constitutes either.

What I see on here is people toss around socialist, or far right, or far left, to things that don't really fit those labels.

I get what your goal is and it's a tough one. These labels almost surely mean different things to different people. It is probably some combination of textbook definition and emotion.

I don't think we'll get much of a consensus on the terms.

True...we may not get it for moderate or conservative or just liberal.  But surely we can define the extremes?

AOC extreme left...correct?

Who would someone consider far right?

Kasich more center/right?

Far right would be someone like Ben Shapiro.  Alt Right = Nazis

It's that or drugs. But, I don't do drugs.

So, here we are.

Good luck....the only clear cut labels you'll be able to produce there are the extremes and you'll spend your time arguing about what it means to be "liberal", "conservative" whatever rather than the position.

Id even love a consensus on extremes.  AOC.  Then what?

can we at least disqualify Libertarian as a category til they come up w what they havent in 25 years - a view of what to do with the barn now that the horse has left, had 14 generations of offspring and died?! yelling "shut the door" is as witheringly feckless as likespeak anymore
