What does it mean to hate America? What are American values? (1 Viewer)

So let me see if I understand this

Ilhan Omar voted YES to give funding to our First Responders.  You know the one who hates America and needs to go back where they came from

Rand Paul who agreed with Trump on his opinion of her just blocked the Senate vote on the bill on the funding.

Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.

I think Donny has made it pretty clear what he thinks is unamerican,  anything that calls him out.

As to American values what are they is a good question. We certainly don't seem to expect much from our government. Or from our business leaders. Or really from anyone but someone we want to attack. We excuse bad behavior from people on our "team" or that we somehow have given a high place in our society with no real concern that they earn it. For an awful lot of Americans hypocrisy and willful ignorance seem to be the guiding lights of their life. I dont really know what "Americas" values are any more.

I would hope after all these years here my personal values would be evident. I know many share those values. I feel those values can lead us to a better place and an America that it's far easier to proud of. I sure hope we get there sooner rather than later. But we have an uphill climb to make them ubiquitous enough to call them American values.

But the kids give me so much hope. Not sure we deserve it but they just might save us from our ourselves yet.

I doubt it.  No one is born a republican or democrat, capitalist or socialist, racist or unprejudiced.   It is all learned and if we are their teachers these kids are doomed to be just like us.

But the kids give me so much hope.
Seems like “the kids” are the demographic most entrenched in the practices that are currently dividing America — overemphasis on identity politics, censoring opponent’ speech, demonizing people who hold dissenting opinions, and on and on.

Granted most of those kids are simply parroting their professors or going along to get along with their peer group.  Many of them will likely outgrow those divisive practices as they mature, but, then again, I anticipate enough won’t to be optimistic that they’ll be our saviors.

Nah many of them looked around, saw how we screwed the pooch and stopped listening. They are more tolerant and more focused on a different more sustainable form of success. I have high hopes.

I work and socialize with the younger folks quite a bit. That's not what I see on a daily basis.

Minor quibble, but I absolutely believe everyone is born “unprejudiced”. It’s the racism that is learned.

Obviously it isn't born.  I have never seen a boy or a girl under the age of 5 or so  not want to play with another kid because of their looks.  And they sure as hell don't know "what they came from"

Studies of infants have shown that children develop an understanding of their primary caregivers around age three months, and then show a preference for people of their primary caregivers’ race.  This is true across races and cultures.

That’s not to say that children hate people of other races or they should continue with these preferences throughout the remainder of their life.  I’m just sharing the science which is clear that children do show racial preferences very early on, and it’s not because it was taught in a nefarious manner.

With that said, yeah, most kids just want to play and they don’t care with who.  That’s why kids rule.

Rand Paul blocked the vote due to the costs.    Didn't he vote in favor of the tax cut which increased the deficit by more than $1 Trillion?

  and that's not all...

While Rand Paul says he blocked the vote to support 9/11 First Responders because it would add to U.S. debt, he had no problem playing golf with President Trump this week at an estimated cost of $1.2 million for tax payers.

at least he has his priorities straight

Her message was certainly one that I disagree with. But is it anti-American?
Yes. I would say that one of the "American Values" is All men being created equal.  And while that's more of a goal then reality since the time it was written, we, Americans, should be striving for that goal.  What she said is in direct contrast to MLK's speech of Content of Character not skin.

King also said: "“The choice is not between violence and nonviolence but between nonviolence and nonexistence.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

Who was he talking to? When push comes to shove. American Values.
