Your Top 5 US Cities to Visit - Exclude Your Own (1 Viewer)

General Malaise

Footballguy
All this talk of states you like, dislike, where you live, where you want to live, etc got me thinking.  List your top 5 U.S. cities but please exclude the city/town you live in now.  You don't have to rank them (I didn't) but you certainly can.  I haven't travelled out of North America so I'm not qualified to speak on any non-US cities (other than Canadian cities - Vancouver is terrific) but feel free to bring foreign cities into the discussion.

GM's Top 5

  • Chicago, IL.  Only been once, but that was enough.  What a treasure of a city.  Food, people, culture, architecture; all spectacular from my visit.  Now, this was done in July, so I'm sure winter might change my mind, but Chicago is awesome.
  • New Orleans, LA.  Been several times, had many fraternity brothers from NOLA and it's hard to find a more fun place in the country.  The food is superlative, the nightlife is sublime and the rich music seems to just ooze out of every street corner.
  • San Francisco, CA.  Yeah, the homeless situation is getting out of hand and it's very sad, but this is a phenomenal city that is perfect for walking.  So many different, unique sections packed into a dense area it's almost hard to believe the contrast.  I'll take New Orleans cuisine over any other style, but for different cultural dining experiences, San Francisco is the place to be.
  • Austin, TX.  I grew up in Dallas, but when I go back to Texas, I much prefer Austin.  Outdoor eating with relaxed, friendly people, great music and nightlife and unlike much of Texas, you get some hills.
  • San Diego, CA.  I haven't been there in close to 20 years, but I used to go quite often in my mid-20s.  Relaxed, laid back beaches, the most gorgeous women I've ever seen and fish tacos.  My god, the fish tacos.

Just missed the cut:  Louisville, Seattle, Ft. Worth, Boston.

Have never been to:  New York City :bag: , Miami, Nashville (driving through doesn't count).

This has been General Malaise for Footballguys.com travel.

I like mine with many bars/restaurants in walking distance and preferably with some uniqueness over the usual city experience.  My top 5 based on how excited I would be to spend a long weekend as a tourist:

NYC

Vegas

New Orleans

San Fran

Seattle

Keeping it U.S. and for varying reasons with an emphasis on place to visit more than place to live.

- Healdsburg, CA:  Peaceful and relaxing, Sonoma Valley is gorgeous, has some of the best food and wine on the planet

- Las Vegas, NV-: Now it serves a very specific purporse, but it does that better than anywhere I have ever seen.

- San Diego, CA: A slice of heaven. An unaffordable slice separated with lots of roads and long drives (not the route 66 kind).

- Traverse City, MI: Kind of like Healdsburg but a beach town. Some of the best hiking and sight seeing anywhere but it's got a short seasonal shelf life.

- Savannah, GA: To be honest, I haven't been there in 25 years. I went there on a family vacation and it just always struck me as kind of magical. I'd love to go back for a weekend.

Vegas—I own properties there and visit there often—but my primary residence is Southern California.  I love Vegas for the variety of entertaining and dining options it has.  It’s also vastly underrated for the things it offers off of the strip.

San Francisco—a fun culture filled city.   I enjoy visiting it very much—but I do not enjoy driving around it (and keep in mind I’m from Southern California where driving conditions are pretty brutal).   I really enjoy the vast amount of micro-communities and neighborhoods.

New York—i’ve only been twice—but enjoyed myself both times.  I enjoyed how brutally honest the people are there. I also enjoy the energy of the city. I am a bit weird in that i really enjoy walking when i’m In a city that I don’t live in—and I really enjoyed walking around in New York.   Great entertainment and dining options as well.

New Orleans—wouldn’t be anywhere near my top 5 as a place to live—-but I very much enjoyed visiting there.   I was there for Mardi Gras a couple times and I really had a wonderful time.  The food is amazing and I thought the locals were very hospitable and courteous.

I have a log jam at #5–basically torn between Miami, Atlanta,  Park City, and Austin.    I’ve enjoyed the 4 mentioned cities here in different ways. I’ve partied my butt off in Miami and Atlanta big time.  Like legit probably have done some permanent damage to my liver there. One of my buddies owns one of the finest sushi restaurants and ultra lounges in Atlanta—so anytime I visit—it’s always an experience.  Miami is also just plain fun and I find that the women there are absolutely beautiful.    Park City and Austin are more laid back or refined fun for me.  They are far more chill—but both have great atmospheres.

I've lived in Chicago, SF and curently live in San Diego...so 3 of GM's top 5.  I've also been to 43 states.

Here are mine:

1.  New York - dining and events are world class

2.  San Francisco - dining, weather and events

3. Jackson Hole - outdoors & relaxation with an upscale, but not dooshy feel

4. Las Vegas - debauchery, I love poker and sports betting, concerts, slutty chicks

5. Princeville, Kauai - for my money, the most scenic place in the United States

Maybe it's the humid weather that has me angling for something a bit more crisp right about now.  I could really go for a place where I could sit on a porch with a nice view, a book, a beer, and a cool breeze.

- Portland, ME

- Juneau, AK

- Boston, MA

- Madison, WI

- Denver, CO

...My mood may change on the day.  If it was a different time of year, I might throw Charleston, Nashville, and New Orleans in the mix.  Not feeling them right now though.  I also might lean to smaller mountain towns more so than cities -- Stowe, VT and Camden, ME come to mind.

If we were including Canada, I'd probably put Quebec City in there.

Chicago, San Diego, Seattle, Austin, and San Antonio are high on the "never been, but really want to go" list.

Out of curiosity, what is it you like about Baltimore?
When we loaded up the family truckster about a decade ago, we spent 2 weeks visiting Philly, NY, DC, and Baltimore. We spent the least amount of time in Baltimore. But, that was the one place that everyone said they liked the most. We spent a day at the inner harbor and a half day at Fort McHenry before heading to Philadelphia. (we underestimated Baltimore and planned too much time in DC and Philadelphia)

I can't really pinpoint it. Maybe I would hate it if I went back.   We just enjoyed it. And the 5 of us rarely enjoy the same things at the same time.

Maybe it's magical. Like Disneyland?

interesting...I've only been once quite some time ago and I didn't have  a strong opinion either way.

interesting
Keep in mind, we live in the most boring place on this planet. Other vacations before that included Mt Rushmore and Disneyland (with the in-laws).

DC and Philadelphia were great for historical reasons. Niagara Falls was freezing cold. So, maybe just being warm, happy, well fed, and together as a family in the harbor is the memory we all want to duplicate.

Off the top of my head...

Vegas

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, FL (near Fort Lauderdale and just north of Miami)

Ocean City, NJ (close to AC)

Philly

Indian Rocks Beach, FL

Throwing out the west coast, you get one of two cities in America: Glass or Brick.

The only city with any real culture in this country is New Orleans, it feels like a different world.  Everything is some reordering if Bank of Americas, CVS pharmacies and starbucks

San Diego is definitely #1 for me.   Awesome weather and plenty to do.

Going to different small college towns for college football is always fun.
Even something as simple as following the espn crew for a few weeks would be interesting.  It would at least give me a chance to hold up an inappropriate sign in the background.

Upstate Michigan in summer

Just outside Gatlinburg in fall

Denver

Boston

A Carolina beach

Want to visit - New Orleans, Pacific NW, Austin, San Diego, and more Rockies

Oh, going to San Diego Xmas-New years for my SILs wedding.  Can't wait to take the family there.

Is Ocean Beach still awesome?

My city, so I can't put it in the mix, but I project managed the build of this award winning website and Milwaukee is indeed a cool up and coming city (especially in the summer!).  Humor me and check it out.

I spun the Let's Get Random wheel three times and landed on Potowatomi twice.  You may want to double check the algorithm.

Nice site.  Milwaukee will always be home.

This is definitely true. I had no love for the area until I discovered life off the Strip.

Yup....great list.  Bend is awesome, Maui is my favorite (of 3 I've visited) island and we both listed Austin. thumbup:
We are so lucky in this country. So much variety.

Didn’t even get to list New Orleans, Miami, DC, Denver, a bunch of costal Cali spots, any number of great college towns, North Carolina mountain towns, Chicago, zillion other places I haven’t gotten to go to yet.

I just went and spun the Random wheel about 20 times and Potawatomi Casino only came up once.   Are you an online gambler by chance?

For anybody curious, the MKE Randomizer Wheel is what is always the biggest talking point of the site....a few scrolls down on the homepage.

Creatives did a great job branding the city...in the vein of "what stays in Vegas" and "Keep Portland Weird".    City is really gaining popularity traction quick.....recently granted the Democratic National Convention next Summer (2020).  The week after Summerfest.   The city is going to be crazy electric next summer!

Chicago - perfect summer city. You’ve got high end, hipster, artsy, great parks, lakeshore. Every neighborhood is unique.

San Francisco - my favorite city in the US. Food, gorgeous views, plenty of things to do. Not too hot in the summer.

Charleston - never been but from what I understand I would love it. Unique food. Old architecture. Ocean views. Probably good golf.

Seattle - also never been. I think I’d love it. Is it too sterile though?

Mammoth, CA. Love the mountains. Hiking, lakes, skiing in the winter. Just big enough to have everything you need.
