OFFICIAL 2019 Training Camp & Preseason: News & Tidbits Thread (1 Viewer)

The Athletic's Matt Barrows believes Ross Dwelley is "probably the frontrunner" to be the 49ers' No. 2 tight end.

George Kittle is obviously the unquestioned starter, so this No. 2 job will be a low-volume gig. Dwelley was a highly productive small-school prospect who has shined when given opportunities this offseason. The undrafted free agent appeared in 11 games for Niners last year.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Bills OT LaAdrian Waddle suffered a torn quad and is expected to miss the 2019 season.

Waddle joined the Bills in March after a three-year-and-change run with the Patriots. He was likely ticketed for a backup role in Buffalo's new-look offensive line room, but this is still a blow for their depth.

Jameis in red zone drills to OJ in far left corner. Seen that a couple of times in training camp. Am expecting to see that a few times this season.

Jameis Winston throws a ball into the back of the end zone that only Chris Godwin can catch......and he does, making a great catch and keeping his feet in despite good coverage. #Bucs #GoBucs #TrainingCamp2019 @CGtwelve_

Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard reports WR Jakobi Meyers is "[Tom] Brady's favorite target" among Patriots receivers.

Even as an undrafted free agent, Meyers (6’2/203) has been the talk of the town at each and every Patriots practice thus far, reportedly outperforming first-round rookie N'Keal Harry and hauling in 14-of-18 camp targets in 11-on-11 drills. Meyers might not make the cut on any other team, but he has a direct path to opportunity in New England's offense as Harry as underwhelmed, Josh Gordon remains suspended, and the team will spend a majority of the preseason finding a backup slot receiver while Julian Edelman (thumb) recovers. He's a player to monitor in the preseason.

Chris Burke @ChrisBurkeNFL

Story on the day coming soon, but in the meantime 5 thoughts off the #Lions' first joint practice with the Patriots:

1. Wouldn't go so far as to call Tavon Wilson "safe," but he's making strides toward being on the 53. Good tip on a Brady pass dropping at the second level today.

2. Marvin Jones has looked really smooth for at least the past week or so now. Already seeing reminders of how difficult he and Golladay are to defend together. He should benefit from all the attention Golladay is going to demand.

3. Don't know if there is room on the 53-man roster for both Ty Johnson and Brandon Powell, but they're both making plays in this offense. Powell getting work with the RBs either means the Lions love his versatility or they're desperate to find reps for him. Maybe both.

4. No surprise here: I still think coverage from the LBs is going to be an issue. They'll be able to cover it up some with their safeties, but beyond Reeves-Maybin it's troublesome ... and James White made him look bad in a 1-on-1 rep today. (It happens. Those 1-on-1s are tough.)

5. The starting line as of now is Decker-Wiggins-Ragnow-Glasgow-Wagner. They've given Dahl and Aboushi opportunities to push for that starting guard job but it's not happening yet. If that O-line holds, bank on a lot of run plays to the right and extra blocking help shaded left.

Falcons placed QB Kurt Benkert on injured reserve with a toe injury, ending his season.

Players placed on injured reserve during camp are not eligible for return, so Benkert has played his final 2019 snap for the Falcons. If he's to get on a practice field this year, it would have to be with another team after being cut loose with an injury settlement. The second-year UDFA out-performed veteran Matt Schaub in the Hall-of-Fame game before going down.

Darrell Henderson has work to do

The biggest surprise of the depth chart is how buried Darrell Henderson Jr. is. The explosive third-round pick finds himself as the team’s RB5. Not only is he behind Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown as expected, but he’s yet to overtake John Kelly or even Justin Davis in the running back hierarchy.

This is likely to change before opening day as the team may not want to keep five running backs on the roster. Still, it shows that the Rams will be patient with Henderson’s development. They aren’t throwing him into the backup running back role from Day 1. He’ll have to earn his way past Kelly and Davis, and he has a lot of work to do before usurping Brown as the No. 2 back.

Keep a close eye on how the explosive rookie performs this preseason. It will likely have an impact on the size of his role in Week 1.

Marquise Goodwin currently is the 49ers' starting split end. Dante Pettis was the starting flanker until today, when Kendrick Bourne replaced him in the starting lineup. Pettis is having a rough camp.
