Euphoria (HBO Series) (1 Viewer)

I mentioned in the Netflix thread (which is kind of a catch all tv thread)... Agree- watched the pilot and nice visuals, but don't think I have the desire to watch self destructive kids acting idiotically. And I'm not buying their behaviour en masse...for a kid or three, sure- but if it's as close to pervasive as the show- we're genuinely ####ed as a society.

IMO the way, way over the top stuff was exclusive to the pilot. That's not to say there isn't a lot of destructive behavior since (there's been plenty) but it feels way more in line with a typical show.

Acting and production are both really great here.

Just watched the pilot. It was ok. I can see the argument that its over the top. I'll give it another episode to see if I like it. Zendaya seems like a good actress.

I'm a little slow, so it took me until the end and I was like, "Wait ... is that what I think it is?"   lol.  I'm a moron.

it being... it... right?

eta: and yeah- she's good. saw the spider man movie over the weekend... part deuze or whatever... and she's in that too as mj- definite star quality.

They dont need Nate to be a super sleuth.  Just have girl say it wasnt him and he gets off.  They should stick with the great atmospheric vibe with the show and not push the plotlines so far out there.

The true romance costume was not bad.  Not bad at all.

It’s so well casted and directed. That carnival episode was just visually stunning. But I watch every episode with a mix of fascination and horror, maybe because I have a teenage daughter.

And I still can’t figure out who the target audience is.

Pervy old guys and their horny wives?

What's odd is that all cultural indicators, surveys, etc., seem to report that The Kids are NOT having sex. Like, at all. So a carnal show is really escapism and not reality.

Zendaya Coleman is a very interesting young study ... started off with Thorne in "Shake It Up" on the Diz ... was one of my daughter's favorite shows ... she played the level headed nerdy type to Bella's ditzy lunkhead proto - they worked well together -it was pretty well done for kid's fare

then she was canned from starring as Aaliyah because she wasn't "black enough" (she's mixed, her mother is of Dutch descent) - she was torn a new one on the social mediaz  - then i noticed she took a turn of  trying to show how 'hood she really was, which i thought belied her true personality ... like she went a lil' overboard to gain back some cred - found her to be a phony ### in that respect ...

anyways, she's a stunning young lady, who i think is very talented - was thinking of giving her and this show a chance ... now it looks like i'm IN.

Have kids in any generation ever been honest about this in polling? Teen pregnancy is way down, porn viewing is way up among all age groups...but is sexual activity actually down? Seems unlikely. I'm 30 but that certainly wasn't the case when I was in HS.

You know, I was just assuming they'd already adjusted for lying in self-reporting. I think that across consistent surveys, relative sexual activity is down, but that's a legit question about honesty in self-reporting.

This is purely anecdotal, but I have a nephew in high school and a number of friends with high school aged kids. When talking with them and observing my nephew, it definitely seems like dating and interaction with the opposite sex is way down from when we were young.

But who knows?

a great majority of the interaction is done via Snapchat and Music.ily ... this is the shtick nowdays

Just read an article from one of the preeminent teen psychologists in the country the other day. As a trend, dating is way, way down among teens, as is sexual activity.

yeah- the portrayal of the community here is self-destructive drug/sex-rampant- and in a public and omnipresent way. something about it- most the self-destructiveness- rubs me the wrong way; I've seen two episodes and actively dislike these kids. the omnipresence seems overdone- but as a middle-aged dude, of course leaves me wondering about whether its accurate or not (I've got cousins and baby-sitters for my own kids who are HS-college aged... and it might just be these kids, but their lives are nothing like what's being shown on this show).

but my reaction has made me wonder- sex and drugs were omnipresent when I was in HS and college too. drugs and sex of all kinds at parties (although not in public for the latter) and definitely socially. we didn't have the social media/easy recording options that phones provide... but I remember a friend having a cam-corder and recording a lot of craziness- craziness that we didn't exactly hide from the camera. can't say that we wouldn't have been doing a lot of the same stuff- although I'd like to think most of us would've had the decency not to post this stuff on social media- but maybe social media and easy access to recordings has so completely flipped the script on what constitutes 'decency' that I'm just an old man behind the times on things. dunno. so at least the show has gotten me thinking about this stuff... and I appreciate that, even if it's difficult and not really enjoyable for me to watch it.

one side note- the kids act so idiotically... and then when caught, are all of a sudden like world class litigators, putting accusers on the spot and turning things around. not really buying that.

That's so interesting.

As a culture, we've sexed up everything around them. We've removed a lot of the stigma around premarital sex. We've supplied lots of birth control in many places. They have nearly unfettered access to a pretty sex-positive atmosphere on social media and the internet in general. More unsupervised time after school than any generation before, I bet (between divorced parents, single parents, or families where both parents work full time).

And, what, Fortnite has dulled all temptation?

I think we have to consider two possible explanations:

1. Every generation of kids gets better at hiding their dirt from the adults in their lives. Especially now with the internet.

2. It's possible that a lot of the sex that was happening in HS in the past was the result of more peer (and societal) pressure than we realized--girls being pressured by the boys they're involved with of course, but also guys being pressured by each other to get there as fast as possible. It's possible we're in a time now where there's a lot less of that pressure from all sides and an understanding that that's not cool.

Maybe it's a mixture of both, or neither. Who knows.

I think point two is something I'd never really considered. I know my personal experiences with my niece, step niece, and nephew are that they just flat aren't dating, and they should be. So there must be some reason. What it is takes a finer eye than mine to see it.

So much of young relationships take place online now that the old definitions and labels may apply way less. Physically getting together and going out as a couple definitely seems to be less common even in college.

This was circa 2010 but I knew multiple college aged women who were definitely seeing and sleeping with someone but had never been on what I'd consider a "date", and didn't use a boyfriend/girlfriend label. This happened a lot in HS as well. People were still hanging out and hooking up though.

That's so true. I'm really no expert. I was sort of reiterating what I'd seen and read about sex in particular. There just doesn't -- and maybe this is sheltered suburb they're in -- seem to be a lot of corporeal time spent with each other by these teens.

They are also getting a LOT more and better sex education which includes a heavy emphasis on the rampant rate of STDs today.  Not only are they not having as much sex, they also aren't drinking alcohol or smoking cigs the way our generation did.  It is possible that health education is working better for this generation.

Now, they are vaping, snorting adderall and eating edible weed, so who knows.....

Finished this up the other day

I was entertained, definitely some uncomfortable scenes

that one girl had some nice boobs

Watched the pilot last night.  Great episode.  A little over the top at times but definitely in for the season.  Reminded me of a modern day Kids mixed with Fast Times.

Meh.  Had high hopes after the pilot but it seemed like the series got progressively worse with each episode.  They reached for way too many storylines without letting them organically build.   Its a shiny package without much substance, pretty much he opposite of Six Feet Under.  It really took some sickness and epic boredom for me to finish the series.  The only redeeming quality is Zendaya.  She really has great range as an actress but can't carry the show by herself.

This is a very well done show and definitely something different.  Great soundtrack that really brings the scenes alive.    Season 2 finale was just last night and a great show to binge watch.    Great acting all around along with some nice eye candy (hello Sydney Sweeney!).   Looking forward to season 3.

Maybe its me but I find it comical that sydney sweeny blasts the director of euphoria for being overly sexual but then gets praise for wearing skimpy outfit last night

The whole play of what has been happening on screen was hilarious.

Not sure the context for this, but I'd like Sydney be hypocritical about whatever she wants

Oh, and :pics:  ?
