This thread has several objectives

1)Understand what socialist policy is and looks like

2) Understand the history of socialism and it's failures

3) Identifying socialist politicians to not support(if you agree socialism is bad)

4) Understand how socialism can destroy the greatness of our country

4) Understand how socialism can destroy the greatness of our country

It is time to educate America.
Please discuss:

  • President Trump did business with the Soviet politburo.
  • His father in law was a communist party official and may even still be in the communist party. He currently lives with Trump's family.
  • His wife was raised a communist and attended communist schools.
  • He allowed his children to spend parts of their childhood in communist Czechoslovakia.
  • He said that Putin as a former KGB officer is fine, just fine.
What makes you think Trump really gives a rat's hair about socialism?

@TripItUp

No thoughts here on the seriousness of Trump's entreaties?

I would prefer a dedicated thread to the topic
It was a thread dedicated to discussing socialism and what parts of our country are already socialist in nature.  It’s basically the same premose except it didn't have the fear mongering.

I liked the part in this piece about Denmark’s PM wanting to stress to Bernie Sanders that they have a market economy.

Most of our country wants a larger social safety net, and liberals will win out on this eventually. When they do, it’s important that we don’t excessively damage the economy by too much government control and regulation.  It is my hope that conservatives of that age will be useful in not letting that happen.

People also don't talk about the general homogeneity of culture and the simple fact that those countries with increased safety nets have less private regulation, writ large.

This is according to conventional narrative, BTW, so if there are counterarguments, I'm all ears.

I have some questions for clarification purposes. Are the following examples of socialism?

1. The New Deal?

2. Social Security?

3. Food Stamps?

4. The Great Society?

5. Medicare?

6. Medicaid?

7. Welfare?

8. Obamacare?

9. Public education?

TIA

Saints I love ya man but this thread has nothing to do with Trump.  Your obsession with him is weird.

Trump has shown with his policies that he doesn't support socialism.

In the current system where we have the “greatest economy of all time” no unemployment yet 50% of population can’t save a nickel and a huge chunk are living paycheck to paycheck something isn’t working.

Someone tell me otherwise.

The only reason Trip or you care about socialism is Trump raised it out of nowhere a couple months ago.
It’s nothing new, of course. Google “Obama socialist” and one will find plenty to read.  It’s just an obvious way for conservatives to scare voters away from liberal ideas.

This is simply not true.  I was scared to death in 2016 when Bernie had momentum against Hillary.   I was very worried about Obama because I knew his goal was to add another entitlement.  His success in that is a big reason he was a terrible president.

Doesn’t Trump have a health care plan that is better than Obama’s? What is that going qualify as?

When one party wants to nationalize an entire industry heretofore not nationalized, socialism is certainly within the realm of discussion topics.

Then why has Trump repeatedly praised the world’s lone Stalinist holdout, Kim Jung Un like a lovesick teenage girl?

You and I have a different view on this obviously.
Well of course.

Like his saying Putin’s role in the KGB is ‘fine’.

Like he did actual business with the actual USSR.

IIRC there have been conversations here where Trump supporters have called for Big Government to intervene in Big Tech and regulate speech online, is this not so?

Thinking that Trump is more socialistic than the Democratic party platform we will see in 2020 is over the moon.

After all, Trump’s tariffs are not only a new tax for Americans, but a policy of directly picking winners and losers in the economy. The interests of steel workers, for example, are being placed above the interest of consumers and farmers. This leads to the government using tax dollars to prop up farmers. Of course this spending means that tax-paying consumers are hit yet again, with their tax dollars being used for this new welfare program.

I certainly hope so but I don't believe Trump will come up with anything on his own.  Hopefully the Republicans can come up with a way to keep private insurance but also provide insurance to legal Americans in need.

If I had a nickel for every time the Von Mises Institute said a policy was socialist...

Don't get me wrong. I love the Von Mises Institute, but using them as the arbiter of socialism is not something the members of the center-left and left on this board should hope for.

What exactly are you expecting to see on that platform? Not the Green New Deal. Not Medicare for All. So what socialist proposals are you anticipating?

Oh, yeah. There's one person whose platform won't read that way -- Biden. That's it. Otherwise, it'll be a mish-mash of nods towards nationalization through regulation or some such rot.

Arguing that Trump is more socialist than these candidates is foolish, and it's not the voting electorate's problem that it can see right through it -- the problem lies in the PSF and its inane debates like this one.

Exactly, Saints knows this and is just trying to deflect the conversation away from the dramatic slant towards socialism by a number of Democratic nominees.

Trump being more socialist than those that are debating Medicare For All and other nationalized health care plans along with elements of the Green New Deal is just laughable. And Trump's no free-marketer.
