Lake Tahoe (1 Viewer)

Any experts in here? Planning a golf trip there at end of September and looking for a little advice.

Some FBG's have to have a third home in the area, right?

We were looking at the North side I think. If we were to be there 1st weekend of October are we still pretty safe with weather on both sides of the Lake?
You should be ok although it will start to be a little chilly.  Rain/snow doesn't begin in earnest until sometime in November.

In addition to the one Wikkid mentioned (the Incline courses)

We were liking: Old Greenwood and Coyote Moon. Those lock us into the North side though.

Is there stuff to do up North if we stay there? Looked quite a bit smaller but as long as we had a casino and a sportsbook we'd be good.
The casinos are smaller in the North but still serve the same purpose. Yes, the ones I've been to have sportsbooks.  Other than that, lots of hiking,  vistas, maybe a day trip to Truckee or Virginia City.  North Lake Tahoe is really pretty.

I went but it was winter time and we did snowmobiling and stuff.  Good times.

Played at a couple of the casinos on the main road there (Harvey's and some other one).  They were pretty quiet for the most part.

If I had to do it all over again and I was going in September, I would look into maybe a fishing charter.

Fishing Charter sounds pretty sweet. Don't think we'll be getting out on the Lake this trip though.

Such a great area, I've only done Reno so first time up into this area.

My sis retired in Incline and I have been 20 times in the last three years. I will be there again in two weeks. BiL is a golf junkie, the type who hits into a net with golf channel on for hours. North Tahoe makes for a pricey but awesome golf trip. The championship course in Incline is spectacular. It is a must. I've played it a half dozen times and watched a couple tourneys there (followed Steph Curry and Aaron Rodgers for 18 last summer). The mountain course is also a nice time. It is so stunning on that hill. The Old Brockway Course in Kings Beach is a simple 9 hole track in the heart of north lakes biggest tourist trap. Fun history and great time. Favorite restaurant nearby is Garwoods (just go). Northstar course is hit and miss. Sometimes a little brown. Sometimes the back 9 needs work (fairways impossible and greens like fringes). I've played it twice and experienced both. BiL is done with it. Tahoe City is another 9 hole track that can't match the mountain course in Incline, but it's still spectacular if the winter didn't rip it up too much. Cheap, fun. But just a click up the 89 is Squaw Creek in THAT valley. Just an awesome Robert Trent Jones championship ride. Go. So stunning. There's a cluster of courses 25 min down the hill near Truckee. Martis Camp is probably the only one worth driving for and it is a very special course and community. We tubed the truckee, caught wild rainbows in a little stream, shot 18 glorious holes and promised to go back but haven't.

Casinos are at Stateline, 4 of them I think. Can't miss them. Usually a pretty good band is playing. But we use the Hyatt in Incline for just about everything, SUP, kayak, boat, food, and gambling. Can't wait to go. PM for more. I hate long posts.

Old Brockway is a good 9 hole course, if you wanted to squeeze in 27 one day.

Northstar has a course, it's decent. Nothing great, not bad either.

If you are in North lake, Reno is only 45 minutes or so away and there are a few good options there.

I like Redhawk the best but Wolf Run and Lake ridge are also solid.

I’m there as I type this.  Here for the week and staying at Squaw Valley.  They have a course here that looks nice but I’m not playing this go around so have no practical experience on it.

Wife and I got married at Edgewood 10 yrs ago and that course is awesome.  It’s where they do the big celebrity tournament early July every year (Romo won the last 2 I believe).  Highly recommend that course but it’s spendy.

Answering here. I didn't mention these because I haven't played them. BiL fully endorses the 27 hole plan in Truckee and thinks you are on a perfect itinerary. So, your research was solid.

Awesome. Thanks again.

For clarity we'd be doing 36 the one day (either rebuy at the course we pick or play Old Greenwood then shoot over to Coyote Moon or vice versa). That doable without going nuts?

We had Redhawk and Wolf Run on the list if we play in Reno. Both look pretty great.

Was hoping for something a bit more wide open since the Tahoe courses look like narrow torture chambers

I'm not a golfer myself, but have family in Truckee.  Have never heard anyone say anything negative about Coyote Moon or Old Greenwood.  I haven't played either course, though.

I have played Gray's Crossing, which IMHO was a pretty nice course.  Not sure if this is true, but have heard Old Greenwood and Gray's Crossing are owned by the same company, so you get a discounted rate if you play both courses in one day.  Coyote Moon is supposed to be the prettiest of the 3 because you are secluded in an area with no houses or roads.  Old Greenwood and Gray's Crossing are right across the freeway, so travel time would be minimal.
Thank you. Gray’s Crossing does look very nice.

I need another day!

Funny, I just was in South Lake Tahoe with the family the past 5 days.  I played golf at Lake Tahoe Golf Course last Thursday with my Dad, brother, and son.  We had a great time.  We stayed at Harveys which as you know was right next to Edgewood but we didn't play the course but it looks awesome.

Had a good trip in reno/Tahoe last year. We played red hawk and it was nice. There was a course in CA that was in the pines that was really nice. If you’re interested I can pull up my old scores and say exactly which courses I played.

Bummer. Would have been cool to put a name to a face and grab a beer.  Hope you had a blast.

My mother owned a home just outside of Tahoe for years, lost far to much cash in my time at Harvey’s.

I looked a bit more.

Old Greenwood / Gray's are owned by same place and have online special play both for $250 that time of year, play within one week.

Talked to a guy from the pro shop and he said in October they can start later / do shotgun starts.

Was the CA course Grizzly Ranch or Whitehawk?

I very rarely play golf and have never played around Tahoe.  I believe the annual Pro-Am where some NFL players participate is usually played on the course next to Harvey's in Stateline.  You'll remember one of Roethlisberger's rapes occurred in the casino hotel there or Harrah's.  I'm no help with golf advice, but could offer some other suggestions:

Stateline/South Lake Tahoe is really where you want to be.  Incline Village is a nice place to live and very scenic, but it's much more limited with dining, casinos, nightlife, etc.

Update on this. Thanks for all the tips.

Ended up playing 2 Reno courses Wolf Run and Lakeridge. Both fine. Probably liked Lakeridge a bit better (but I played better).

Stayed in a VRBO up near North Tahoe. Very nice area. Old school casinos up there, a bit of a David Lynch vibe going on but could get the gambling fix covered. King’s Beach had some good food as well as Incline Village.

Golfed Grey’s Crossing and Old Greenwood up in Tahoe. Had a deal to play both for $200. Very nice courses pretty similar.

Great area will go back down again to check out South side of lake. Imagine it’s a mess in summer with crowds, fall was great.
