The Irishman - New Scorcese movie about Jimmy Hoffa (1 Viewer)

In. Even if they're all old and washed up, this is their element.
Scorcese used a ton of CGI to portray the geezers as youngsters, rather than having younger actors physically participate.

i know the story of this cat, he told a ton of tall tales on his death bed ... this flick looks like a lump of ####, all factors considered.

pass.

That's a surprising choice. He's never had issues before casting young actors as the kid version of the characters.

My guess based on what I read and another poster was saying is that much of the movie is main characters as younger people- it is a concern

####, I wish I could unread this.

Watched it this morning and was not overly impressed, tbh.  Everyone was fine, but nothing was great.

Too long, not enough really happened. Pesci was actually pretty decent.

Honestly, the CGI was slightly distracting, but there was one scene were De Niro was supposed to be beating on some guy and it was pretty bad.  Also, was a weird dynamic between Peggy and Russell which was quite unnecessary.

I'd give it a 3/5, I was disappointed

I was really excited to turn this on tonight but was really bummed when I saw the runtime. I’m lucky if I can squeeze a normal movie into two nights these days.

They do the limited release before Netflix just to qualify for awards?
Theatre's didn’t want the three and a half hour production. A lot went on behind the scenes to make the movie for budget and how to get it to the public over the years. Folks just don’t do 210 minutes in a theatre. Limited release allows it to be considered for awards but not because they would object to a theatrical release. Plus Netflix shelled out a lot of money once it was observed that it was behind budget and Scorsese wasn’t budging on the length.

Half hour in. Don’t know if I can watch old man DeNiro attempt to be violent for three more hours.

I truly do find DeNiro to be distracting in every scene but after 80 mins at least, this is very good and worth watching. Calling it a night, hopefully knock out the rest tomorrow.

Much slower than Goodfellas or Casino- maybe what’s missing is the great rock soundtrack both of those movies had. Also, both of those movies featured Joe Pesci as a bat#### crazy guy and that was part of the attraction- here he’s very calm like everybody else.

Still very watchable. But I wouldn’t put it in the same ballpark as those films.

I'm an hour in and it is definitely not living up to my expectations based on they hype. It's very slow and not incredibly interesting. I can deal with slow if the journey is worth it but I wasn't really expecting a documentary-like dive into Hoffa.

It’s a movie based on the life of Frank Sheeran who was an associate of Hoffa and claims to have killed him, I was expecting heavy Hoffa

I found the CGI distracting early but got used to it eventually. I think the main trio needed to be about 10 years younger to make this really work perfectly. The one scene referenced above where Deniro beats a guy up while looking like he can barley move is bad- up there with the Godfather fight scene. I am surprised they didn't edit that scene where the violence happens off screen and we see it through his daughters face.

I enjoyed the movie more and more as it went on. I loved how American history is weaved in and out of the film. I do think if one is expecting Goodfellas, they will be disappointed. It's not that. I look at it like this:

Scarface is the gangster film for young men. It's all testosterone, swagger, drugs, women- everything is big. The hero goes out in a blaze of glory.

Goodfellas is the gangster film for midlde aged men. It's still got all the swagger and charisma but it also shows that things are uglier than Scarface. There's a real life out there with ex-wives, kids, business falling outs, getting arrested, serving time, ratting people out, etc.

The Irishman is the gangster film for old men. Slower, nostalgic, meandering, lonely, cold and mostly forgotten.

Also, the movie really is called I Heard You Paint Houses. The one condition Netflix had was to not use that title. But the start of the film begins with I Heard You Paint Houses where the title should be so it is pretty clear what Marty thinks the movie is.

Didn't plan on watching the whole thing last night but ended up staying up till 3:30am and finished it.

This is not Goodfellas or the Departed. The action is few and far between. A lot of it is slow. Very slow. I like slow movies but this takes it to an extreme in a lot of scenes. Some scenes are a bit repetitive. They took a lot more time to reiterate relationships and bickering back and forth before actually deciding something. The daughter part was very basic. I got it but they didn't really expand on anything with it.

With all that said, I was interested throughout. The subject material kept me compelled. The settings were perfect. Pesci especially gave a very good performance for his role. Deniro was ok. Pacino did well enough. A lot of other Scorcese veterans in here too.

Overall I'd say it's a 7/10. Well worth watching once. Could have been about 45 minutes shorter and if it was wide released I think it would have been.

Incredible movie.  Didnt want it to end even at 330 hours long.  I thought it was going to end with him being interviewed for the book.  I believe he did it, why else would he admit to it.  And the timeline works out as well.  Crazy story.

Just finished. Liked it more at the hour mark. It was fine. It could have been an hour shorter easy, maybe even 1:15.

Took 2 nights to watch it. I wasn’t disappointed. It scratches the mafia movie itch. Like others said it was slow paced, reminded me of the pace of movies out of the 70s like The Godfather or the Deer Hunter.

After seeing Nicholson play Hoffa it was hard to buy Pacino’s ice cream eating version.  He played it more like Henry Winkler than Jimmy Hoffa.
