$1.6 million reasons why Hyde stays in KC (1 Viewer)

I see another projection from Jeff Taylor of the Athletic that leaves Carlos Hyde off the 53-man roster for the Chiefs.  Apart from the fact that that would leave the Chiefs with very little NFL experience at backup RB (behind a starter with relatively little game experience), the Chiefs gave Hyde a $2.8 million, 1-year deal, with a $1.6 million signing bonus.  The signing bonus is more than Damien Williams' salary cap hit of $1.05 million.  I just don't see the Chiefs throwing away $1.6 million to have a 6th round rookie, Darrel Williams, and a converted CB be their only backup RBs.  I agree that Darwin Thompson is going to eat into Hyde's touches.  But KC will need an experienced "big back" in case Damien Williams cannot carry the load or gets hurt.  I think the shark move is to still own shares of Hyde late.  Thoughts?

$1.6 million isn't a lot of money in today's NFL. Guys get cut for more than that.

As for another backup, if Hyde gets cut, it's a pretty easily replaceable position even if Reid went that route. Williams himself was a castaway from the Dolphins behind Hunt and Ware. There are guys like Ajayi who are just waiting for a call, if push came to shove.

I agree that $1.6 million is not that much relative to the cap.  But it is VERY rare that a team will eat $1.6 million for a player they signed to a one-year deal.

The $1.6M guaranteed is a sign that the Chiefs intended to keep Hyde when they signed him (rather than just have him come in and compete for a roster spot), but at this point it is already paid and shouldn't have too much effect on their decision-making. The choice that they're facing is whether to keep Hyde and pay him an additional $1.2M, or whether to keep Darrel Williams and pay him $0.6M, or whether to keep both of them and cut the last guy at some other position (like 3rd TE Deon Yelder who would cost $0.6M to keep). Keeping Hyde is probably more expensive than the alternative, and if they think he'll also offer less to the team (including special teams value) then they'll want to eat their losses rather than adding to them.

What you're thinking of is called the sunk cost fallacy.  It's most commonly known as something related to poker - when you keep throwing money into a hand you've already lost because you've already put a ton of money into the pot.

NFL gms know when to cut bait.  If Hyde isn't going to help them they'd be better off cutting him and signing a rookie who can at least play special teams in his place.  Rb is one of the very few spots where veteran knowledge isn't needed.

The Chiefs will have to worry about re-signing Hill and Mahomes soon. Anything they can save now and carry over cap wise will help them in the future.

The Athletic's Nate Taylor reports Chiefs sixth-round RB Darwin Thompson "appears to have leaped" Carlos Hyde on the depth chart.

Thompson has reportedly worked ahead of Hyde at camp this week, splitting first-team reps with Damien Williams. It's further affirmation to how the Chiefs view Thompson heading into the year as coach Andy Reid recently noted the sixth-round rookie has "good vision in the run game" and a "pretty good understanding of the pass game", too. With 9/52 rushing and 1/29/1 receiving on limited usage this preseason, it would not be shocking to see Thompson start the year ahead of Williams in a third-down, change-of-pace role, reducing Williams' ceiling as fantasy's current RB13. Thompson has standalone value at the back of fantasy drafts even if he initially receives low volume out the gates. This news also makes Hyde a candidate for release once final cuts occur.

Seems like a foregone conclusion that unless Hyde has a strong showing this week, he’s gone. Or maybe it doesn’t matter regardless at this point.

Not a surprise, he’s usually the worst RB on the roster (every stop since he left the 49ers.)

Add Chris Jones here too.

Are there multiple sources saying he's gonna get cut?

The Athletic's Nate Taylor is the only one i've heard predict him being cut.

Rotoworld had a blurb citing a Taylor tweet. They also mentioned Hyde as a potential cut.

damn now you are really going to have to reach for Thompson

Going to beat this drum again - back end rbs need to play special teams or they don't suit up. Hyde doesn't play special teams.
