We'll go with this thread for season 9, season 8 OP hasn't logged on in a few months, so title update wasn't coming.

Discuss!

Love this 80s revival American culture is going thru right now. The wardrobe selections are fantastic. I'm just not sure I can take a serial killer called Mr Jingles seriously  :oldunsure:

really enjoyed the 1st two seasons, but lost track of the show and never got bak into it b/c I heard it got strange. I dig the concept for this, so do you think I can jump in now and not worry about the last few seasons? Are they tied together at all?

I think you can jump in now. The only thing they have brought up from past seasons was showing the Night Stalker (Richard Ramirez). He showed up as a ghost in one episode during the season of Hotel. Ramirez started his killing spree in 1984, so he matches with the timeline of this season.

John Wayne Gacy was Pogo the Clown.

I'm liking all the 80s culture like you mentioned. I hope this season is a good one.

Jesus, just watched the first episode...so terrible. Yeah, its like a campy 80s horror flick, but I can watch a thousand of those any time. The killer is boring and not the least bit scary. AHS is hot and miss, and so far this one's a miss. I'll watch one more episode before I decide for sure, but I don't expect to watch episode 3.

Were the 80s really that great? Bad hair, lots of bad music (compared to other decades), Cold War, AIDS, Mediterranean fruit flies...

I lost my virginity in the 80s so yeah they really were that great.
Me too..and yes, the 80's were awesome and full of excess. The 70's were denim and the remnants of the dirty hippies. The 90's  were stress and so many full of self-importance.

But back to the subject at hand, I enjoyed EP . Billie Lourd had some great lines, but there is no way they will continue with this story arc. They will find a way to incorporate wormholes or aliens or some government conspiracy and screw this up.

This is so bad.  First season was so good and then this show went off the rails.  I watch because my wife watches and even she's thinking about stopping.  It's like it's written by a 15 year old kid trying to push the boundaries of television by writing his best guess of soft porn.

And this season is such a blatant rip off of Stranger Things.  The music, the era, and even the opening title.  It's a glowing red with that Stranger Things music playing.  I mean, it's pretty much what Stranger Things would be if it was on at 2am on Cinemax.

I thought I might bow out of this season after the first episode, but I'll probably give it one more episode, just because I'm curious to see how much worse it gets.

  I'm enjoying the 80's campiness.. It is basically all the "campiness" of the 80's horror flicks tied into 1 show.

Of Course I'm someone that still enjoys watching The first 3 Friday the 13th's, the first 2 Nightmare on Elm Streets and other 80's horror flicks.

I liked them, too.  But they were unintentionally campy.  This (as most of his seasons (and shows)) just seem like they're trying WAY too hard.

S1 was scary as hell. Since then it’s been silly.

I loved season 1.  It was so good.  But I think it's because I didn't realize that people could die and then still come back every season.  It took away the amazement of an on screen death.  I remember when the girl was revealed to be dead in season 1 and I was blown away.  My mind was going over and over how they could make a season 2.  Would she be in it?  It was such an amazing reveal.  Then they all died.  The next season, when someone died, it was like   .  And then it just started going for silliness.  And twists and turns that were more distracting or unnecessary than interesting.

Interesting way to look at it. That didn’t bother me because they were playing totally different characters. I just thought the stories got ridiculous.

No.  I get they are playing different characters.  What I meant was in season 1, you thought death meant that that character/actor was probably gone from the show.  Maybe she could stick around as a ghost or something, but death seemed final.  When the reveal of her death came about, it was great TV.  A plot twist you didn't see coming.  But you quickly learned death meant nothing.  Since each year would be a different theme, you were pretty much just wondering when each character would bite it.

But yes, also the stories got dumb.

That makes sense, the deaths went from a surprise to expected

I'm currently binge-watching Apocalypse, and characters keep coming back to life constantly.  Not the same actor playing a different character (although there are quite a few in-season character swaps too), but literally the same character coming back from an extended death.  Not a fan of this season, but I'm nearly done and I'll finish it.

I’ve only seen bits from the Cuba Gooding, Jr season, whichever one had Kathy Bates running some Deliverance camp, and now a couple eps of this season (my wife watches them all, that how I’m here)...is this show supposed to be a comedy?

Seemed like a Scream tribute week.. Multiple people running around in Jingles masks.. Multiple people being in on the two killers being brought to the camp..

80's Horror campiness is in full force here.
Still wish they'd go back to season 1 "Horror".. It is not saying much, but this season has been more enjoyable then the past few.

Best recommendation is.. Watch Season 1.. They set the bar VERY high with that season and have never been able to get it back. :kicksrock:
Then, unless you like 80's horror campiness, skip the rest.

Eh, it's still better than most horror series not on Netflix (which I don't subscribe to).  I'll keep watching on DVR

They are usually intentionally campy. I have only seen a couple seasons- the first one is genuinely scary and worth watching.

Nothing screams 1984 like the movie Scream.

How is this season so far? I haven't been able to watch since episode 1 since I started a new job a few weeks ago that includes Wednesday overnights  :(  and I've been too lazy to pull them up on demand.

Thought this week had some good moments and a decent twist..

Locking the guy in the oven and cranking it to broil was    Although his clothes not even being slightly burned was bad.

And.. Well.. The  is in control..

If you enjoy campy 80's horror flicks then..... not as bad as every season other then the first...

Best episode of the season. Yes its campy, but they got multiple storylines and people ganging up on each other. The sole survivor isnt going to be who you are expecting it to be. Activities guy dead sucks tho.

We are actually enjoying 1984. We love 80’s camp horror so this is right in the wheel house. Last season we gave up after 4 episodes. Was an absolute train wreck.

Nothing will ever top the greatness of Season 1. They have not even come close to what that captured.

But there have been some entertaining seasons since (Freaks, Roanoke and Cult all of them I watched all the way through). I want to give Coven another chance. Hotel and Apocalypse were utter garbage.

I think they have set a new record for both the fewest episodes before going completely off the rails, and also for going further off the rails than any other season.

With this week being advertised as "the 100th episode", hoping this leads to some flashbacks to Season 1..

Last week's episode was about as strange as it comes, but thought there were some decent moments.... Was hoping they continue on with the Friday the 13th throwback and have something/one grab that kid as the anchor went overboard.

I do like how they closed the storyline on why that one guy from the first killings was still hanging around, with a throwback to the Hotel season.. "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. ;)

In typical AHS the show is going off the rails. But...we are still enjoying the "characters". And that is what really keeps you interested in this type of show. Not a great season, but not a trainwreck like a few I have mentioned.

This week was not bad.. Liked the throwback to Friday the 13th part 1, with Mama being the killer in '48 after son dies due to life guard having sex and older brother peeping..

Bringing Mama back as a Ghost that haunts the camp was also, what seemed to me, a decent attempt to bring back what worked best, Ala Season 1.

Here's to hoping they continue down that path.
