Seinfeld to Netflix - Not the story you think (1 Viewer)

TheIronSheik

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
So Netflix signed a deal worth half a billion dollars for the rights to Seinfeld.  I guess they hope that will fill the void Friends and The Office leaves.

But the craziest part was seeing people's reactions on Twitter to this.  People (and I assume most of these people are young people who love to tell others what to do with their money) were irate that Netflix would waste that much money when they could have used it to save the rain forests, or solved global warming, or housed the homeless, or fed the hungry...  I know when I was young, I had some pretty stupid views about how the world worked.  But I would say by the time I had hit 22, most of those views were gone and reality had set in.  But as a whole, we're we this dumb when we were young?  I mean, our generations.  And, yes, I know we all were a certain stage of dumb.  But I feel like this generation is Stage 4 and terminal.

Yeah...I don't get the connection between Netflix and world issues.  They pay that money because it helps them gain and keep subscribers.  To...you know, stay in business.

But alas...people aren't always the smartest beings out there when it comes to such things.

When we were young we had Live Aid and Farm Aid to raise money for things while we played "smear the #####".  Ok, that wasn't at 22.  But even at 22...we were probably stupid or didn't care.  The ones that did...didn't have social media to complain so damn much about everything.

We were probably equally as dumb, but we didn't give a platform to the dumbest 2%.
This is a great point.  It could just be that this generation has the good fortune of having a way for their dumbest people to have the loudest voice and it makes them all look bad.  Our generations were lucky.  Ricky was a moron, but no one listened to him outside of our small town.  And we all knew he was a maroon.

It's going to be interesting to see how Netflix ends. It's as close to a Ponzi scheme as you can get in entertainment, throwing outrageous dough at something ridiculous each time subscriptions lag. Good for content folk, though - my dream to earn a ladle along the banks of the Money River would be a lot easier now that it's a pond.

I give thanks for that almost every day.
I remember we used one of those big hand held camcorders that sat on your shoulder to film us drinking and partying one night.  It wasn't continuous but just kind of passed around and we'd film for a while.  We watched it the next day and it was pretty funny.  But I can't imagine that tape being put on the internet for everyone in the world to judge me and my actions.  Good fun for our small group of idiots.  But the world did not need to ever see that.

Just out of curiosity, does this mean that if I want to watch Seinfeld I will only be able to do so on Netflix?
Far as i can tell, this is just streaming rights, a seemingly huge sum if so but in line with that paid to take Friends & Office from them. Guess the young folk really aren't watching TV anymore. My sis's much-younger new housemate has asked that the 40 inch TV (with every imaginable channel) be taken out of her room, but lies in bed most evenings in, watching streams.

It turns out that Cythia was right - we really should nuke the rainforest, you know, get rid of it in one fell swoop so we can at least eliminate it as a subject of conversation.

I'm certainly not young, but the only live TV I watch anymore is sports.  Otherwise it is DVR/on demand/streaming.

Shouldn't the money paid by the tv networks to the pro sports leagues and NCAA conferences for the rights to televise the games also go to the homeless in the rain forests?

My 15 year old son doesn't watch regular TV.  He has streamed/binged Friends (multiple times), How I Met Your Mother, The Office, and is now watching Brooklyn 99 and That 70s Show.

Shouldn't any dollars spent on anything outside of food and shelter be better spent on homelessness and rain forests?

It's my favorite show of all time but never really would knock out many episodes in a row (back when I used to have all the DVDs) and I haven't thought of it as a "fall asleep to" show since back before there was streaming.

Interesting to see how much that changes with the new format.

There’s your problem right there.

Yeah, that's the news I got out of this. That sucks. I might cancel Netflix.
They aren't technically removing it.  They lose the rights at the end of next year, I believe.  And, yes, sad to say, but The Office is pretty much the only thing I watch on Netflix.  Might cancel it and just subscribe the months Ozark and Stranger Things comes out.

Should have spent it on content that is actually funny.  I was always working so never watched the show when it was on.  But caught three episodes a couple years ago and never laughed at a one.  Maybe you have to watch the show from the start.  I'll give it another try, when I'm bored at work.

I'm looking forward to rewatching this.

That said, it is morally offensive that The Simpsons isn't easily streamable.   That show is a cultural masterpiece -- at least for 7-8 seasons -- and it's sort of nonexistent on the streaming services.

simpsons world or fxx.

also

Disney+ is about to become the exclusive streaming service to watch The Simpsons. ... The Simpsons is currently available to stream on Hulu, and Disney now has majority control of Hulu, which the company is planning to continue investing heavily into, according to Kevin Mayer, head of Disney's direct-to-consumer product.

I've been watching on Hulu with our 9 year old for months. I've lost track what season we are up to, but we just watched Bart vs Australia tonight #Don'tTreadOnMe
