How long could you live like it's 1986? (1 Viewer)

'86 was my HS graduation year.  I would love to relive it, but I never had, nor will I ever have, a mullet.  That would be a deal breaker.
Fine.....

Jheri Curl... High Top..... Flock of Seagulls.   Any of them will work.

20 years old? Check

Hot GF? Check. She had these adorable Victoria Secret-type skirts that she always wore. Dumb as a box of rocks, but perfect for that time.

Ride was a 72 Pontiac LeMans. Little rusty, but with a sweet, purring 350. Fun car.

Made about $400 a week (plus commission) as a manager in a big, busy retail store. Really cool job, and good money then.

Good times.

That was the summer that Fletch showed up on cable.  I remember watching that with her and her family.  While it was about the funniest movie I had seen in my life up to that point, the only part she and her family laughed at was when Fletch hit the Mercedes with his tennis racket. Made me a little uncomfortable.

I was 9.  The Royals were the reigning WS champs, and my highlight was getting an NES for Christmas that year.

Sure seems like a simpler time...  I can't imagine a world without the internet though now..  and I didn't even have the internet until college in '95

I turned 1 that year. I honestly don't feel like having to sit in my own #### again, and I certainly know my mother wouldn't want to change me now.

I was a Jr. in H.S.and had a 1981 Supra and a semi-hot GF.  Slap it high!
HS class of '86

Ice Blue 1981 Toyota Celica "Supra" (yeah, it still said Celica on the Supra)

Classic body style which was a long nose Celica with a straight 6 cylinder.

Changed them in 1982 to the more recognizable "wedge" design with flip up headlights.

Standard shift ... but it had power windows and A/C ... which was an option on cars back then.

Today people couldn't even conceive the idea of a car without power windows and A/C.

I don't think I'd have a problem living like that again. I'd certainly get alot more done if I didn't have internet and cell phone to entertain me.

This was my gold Supra - louvers and everything.   Lost my virginity in the hatch back, and the rest of the year wore out the front passenger seat.

I also had a 72 LeMans in 86. Graduated HS in 85. I'd go back.

Mine was silver. No louvers. Manual transmission. Had a sexual encounter or two in it. Was absolutely my companion the Summer of '86. Got me through a lot of miles and twice as much angst (having a scorching hot GF played all kinds of head games on 20 year-old me).

Sadly, I pretty much abused that car over the next 8 years and gave up on when the clutch started to go. Used to believe I should have spent the money I put into a new car into my Supra instead, but it never would have survived with me through marriage and 3 kids. Probably would have been forced to get rid of it for a minivan.

It would suck to limit yourself to outdated technology. Trying to keep in touch with people would be a massive pain, as described in the article. I wouldn't want to live like that for any length of time. If you're talking about time traveling to another year, that's a completely different question.

False.  Thank god for instant reply.

I need some clarification to determine whether or not I could make it. Would the hustler magazines be from today or would I have to use 1986 magazines?

Not sure I could go back to analog porn
In 1986 I didn't need porn

Sophomore year in college, living in a house with all my HS buddies (for the next 6 years), pulling in about $300 a week working at a machine shop and living large. If I had a time machine it would be set to 89, 88, 87, 86 in that order so yea, I'd go back. #### staying in touch with the world. I stayed in touch with all the people I needed to in 1986 and was fine with it. GPS would be nice but if you got lost in '86 you bought a 12 pack and turned it into a road trip.

Here is my ethical dilemma with time travel. I have two beautiful daughters I love very much, would my selfishness going back to 1986 negate their existence? If so I couldn't do it.

Renting porn VHS tapes from the little room off of the main room at the video store worked back then, so having a few around today would be no problem.  Seemingly unlimited cash at my disposal since no bills to contend with sure makes me want to be there again.

We all had cb radios, so I could reach a lot of people easily if I needed to meet up.

I'm in.

I don't have any friends or use FB, so it would be easy peasy. At home that is. I don't think I could get away with telling my boss "Hey, can't get any work done for the next year because I'm doing this cool social experiment thing."

Ha!

Not only did I have a mullet in '86, my high-school had a strict "no hair below the collar" policy. S0 - I got a perm in just the "mullet part" so it would curl up over my collar. At night, I'd blow dry it out straight and long.

I was a machine ... :bag:

Would I go back? Yeah. There was actually one girl that dug it. That was enough for me. 😁

Did it for 5 days this summer.  My wife and daughters were going to California to a visit friends, my buddy has a cabin on a lake in Northern MI that I can use anytime.  I thought this would be a nice get away as I was on vacation that week.  I took my  Labrador Retriever and jumped in the Jeep and headed out.  An hour after I left I realized I forgot my phone so I just said screw it as the cabin has a land line but no cable or internet.

So no phone, no internet , TV had a few local stations.  I got my news by walking up to the local store about 1/2 mile away and buying a newspaper.   The first day or 2 I felt anxiety like I was missing something.  I was missing nothing!    Actually after the second day I felt liberated and instead of being online and on my phone checking things that do not matter all the time I was walking the dog along the lake, sitting outside, reading newspapers, it was very relaxing and enjoyable.

Graduated hs in 86. Chicks galore, great physical shape, had all my hair, no cell phones, no internet but we had cable and MTV was good back then. I could imagine worse like going back to 1975-79. That was awful
