SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
I was going to put this in the thread, but I guess it got whacked.

So I'm sitting at work and I get an email that says, "Look into an app called WhatsApp to see if we could use it in our plants."

So the thought is that it's to be used by a bunch of maintenance guys from all of our plants across the country.  Since there's only like 2 at each plant, the thought is that by using this, they could ask the other maintenance guys at other plants about issues and fixes.  Does this sound like a good thing?  Is there a downside to it in this situation?  Can you send out a group WhatsApp message to all  recipients? I downloaded it onto my phone and I can't really play around with it because it wants me to enter another person's phone number.  I tried just saying "hot lady from restaurant" but nothing happened.

Thoughts on this app for this purpose?

From what I know about it, this seems like a perfect use for the app.  Its like a private message board for the current culture, where people don't use message boards and want to communicate 100% through messaging on their phones.

I tend to think something like SLACK would be better for that use case.  As I understand it, WhatsApp is pretty much just an instant messenger.

It's actually pretty great for communication when people are traveling out of the country.
Yep. Also pretty useful when I go to one of the local casinos that has the poker room in the basement. There's virtually no cell service but there is wifi available.

Slack was my first thought, but if they don't have it set up already there is the cost and implementation to think about.  You could also use Microsoft Teams depending on if that is easier to setup/manage.

I had Slack for about an hour at my old company before they laid me off.  It seemed a little more complicated.  Would people who aren't tech savvy be able to use Slack?

This is what I was thinking it was.  This sounds like a good thing.

So no real downside for using it like as I specified?  We're not looking for anything special, so if this fits the bill, great.

Bonus to something like Slack is that you can set up channels for different things, kind of like threads on a message board.  You can set it up to give notifications when things are posted to a channel, you can @ people like on a message board, etc.

I had a client who wouldn't look at emails, only read texts. Couldn't send work attachments via text well, so sent via WhatsApp.

Also used it to video conference with a project team overseas.

Also use it to chat with my niece living in Ireland.

It's a wifi based messaging app like pretty much any other.  WhatsApp, GroupMe, FB Messenger, Google hangouts, etc.

We are using GameChanger for actual team-type stuff... we just need something for the girls to have a Group Chat on because some of them claim they can not join the regular SMS group chat because they have iPhones

Not compressing memes seems to he high on the priority list.

P.S. I can not stand Gamechanger or TeamSnap... but TeamSnap is WAY better IMO

We use Slack in a service based blue collar environment and it has been an absolute game changer with ridiculously high adoption, even from our known Luddites. Set up a #general or #offtopic channel for fun stuff for them as well.  Great teambuilder for dispersed teams as well.

I am in a dynasty football league that refuses to use a traditional message board... and the MFL message board is basically useless... so we use Slack.  It works good, when people actually use it.

I have just been tasked with finding something similar for a girls softball team.  WhatsApp was my first thought.  Is it working well for the team?
It will work but TeamSnap is better, not sure if that’s free or not.  I use it but not the coach or anything.  But I like that teamsnap can sync to calendar and you can have people add their availability for each game (going / not going)

for WhatsApp it’s basically just

HEY REMINDER WE HAVE PRACTICE

BILLY WONT BE THERE

OK

I THOUGHT PRACTICE WAS TOMORROW WE WILL BE LATE

maybe it can do more but that’s how ours have gone

Provides text messaging but also voice and video chat.
I had to install it when we started doing business with a company in Korea. Works good for what it is, have used it to call/text/trade pics etc. Was handy when we went there this year and had to contact them for a ride. Was the easiest way to get a hold of them.

Not fan of the security breaches I keep hearing about.

Have used Teamsnap and seems to do the job, although started to get bloated with ads and such.  Only thing I have used Gamechanger for was actually scoring the baseball game, not tracking scheduling or anything.

yeah we dont use teamsnap to keep the book.  Just create schedule, send out alerts etc etc

Strange ... it's working for me.

It's like a gosh darn tracking device. Looks like she's heading to the gym now.

Surprised no one is using this for sinister activities.
