Credit Card Debt - Done! (1 Viewer)

As of yesterday, my family is now credit card debt free. The only debt we have is our house (where we just refinanced to take 6 years off of our note) and 1 car.

11 years ago rocked our world. We had a 4 year old and a 2 year old. My wife worked part time, but only a couple days a week because we wanted her home with the kids as much as possible until they went to school. Plus, the cost of day care basically made her paycheck even-steven in terms of what we would outlay in day care.

I was working full time, but my insurance was not very good. We were lower middle class but could pay our bills and my job was secure. But we didn't have much extra money.

Then my two year old had a seizure in the middle of the night. For those of you who have never been through this, it is really scary. And we then had to go through a lot of testing and specialists and such to see what was going on. To make a long story short, we owed a ton of money. My insurance had a high deductible because that was all we could afford. As a result, we had debt. A ton of it. We had to supplement trying to pay medical bills with our credit cards for everyday expenses, mainly just to stay afloat and not claim bankruptcy. We paid the bills but ended up with a lot of debt on credit cards.

Today, we are basically debt free. That credit card debt is no longer hanging over our heads and never will again. We have cash in savings and can now build on that. My child, Thank God, is healthy and grew out of the issues he was having. We are very fortunate. We also have a 3rd child now.

The point of this story is two-fold: I am proud of us. We sacrificed and cut expenses and ate cheap food and kept the air conditioner and furnace turned way down to save money, and we finally won out.

But also for those few of the FBG'ers who are not FBG rich: you CAN get it done. It does take time. It does take sacrifice. And we were a very fiscally responsible family until life threw us a major curveball. But you can get out of it. We are what the middle class faces on a day to day basis here in the US. Life is tough, but you can grind your way into a better place.

Peace and love to you all. :)

I’m proud of you too! We had $50k of debt (Credit card, car loans, student loans)when we got married. No kids. Just stupid living large college play time. Took 4 or so years to pay it all off. At least you had a good reason to go into debt. Good job getting out of it. That is a great feeling.

Great to hear. Congrats!

Don't know the answer. It just doesn't seem right that catastrophic health issues are sometimes the cause of catastrophic financial issues.

Nice job!

Now take the family out to a nice dinner but then....keep plugging that extra money that you were throwing to CCs to savings/retirement/college savings/etc.

Congrats man.  We went thru this very early in marriage.  Thankfully we went thru it before kids.

Been there and done that TWICE. Didn’t learn our lesson the first time but have been debt free (accept the house) for about 12 years.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Congrats. It’s not easy nowadays when it’s single income. I wish I had been a little smarter squirreling more money away pre-kids when my wife stopped working, but just the past 5-6 years when my wife went back full time and all 3 boys were in school has been a dramatic difference. Again, wish I was smarter (didn’t have great mentoring) putting away more for college but the cash flow and cash savings makes college not a big issue. It’s nice to have that freeing feeling like you have now.

Was it a febrile seizure?
Yeah, the first one was. Happened about 1 in the morning. Freaked us the heck out. He then had another smaller seizure a few weeks after that. For awhile he would get weird eye rolls where something wasn't quite right.

We had to do a brain wave deal where he had to stay up all night so he would be exhausted in the morning for the test. At 2 years old. Imagine a screaming kid for an hour while they attached brain scan nodes all over his head. I will never forget that day. Good God it makes me tear up right now just typing this out.

We also ended up seeing a specialist to make sure he didn't have epilepsy. Which he didn't. So we came out of it ok. Was a rough year.

Yeah, we had two of those with our daughter when she was also 2.  Terrifying.  She's a fighter, so trying to put a catheter in her to collect urine was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do as a dad. She was kicking, screaming and hitting anybody and anything that came near her, which deep down, I'm grateful for because there is no way she's going down without a fight in life.

But yeah, the first time we experienced a febrile seizure was certainly scary stuff.  Glad your kid is alright and that you're on the right side of the ledger financially.

Congrats Chief!  It took us about ten years to get out of debt.  There is no feeling like it.  Worrierqueen was able to retire at 55.  I'm looking at 60.  Everything is easy when you don't owe anything.

Great job!!!

Congrats Chief!

Same here....just did the same thing as of yesterday!!

I did it a few years ago and had been bouncing between 1 to 4K...but got that all paid off yesterday!
