Best of the Decade... (1 Viewer)

How the time flies - we are about to close the book on the 2010s.   I don't care what it is - just wanted a thread for people's "Best of the Decade" ideas.   Figure at least a top 5, but don't care what you bring to the table - movies, books, TV Shows, sporting events, etc..   We all have our different passions.

Favorite Movies: These are ones I left the theater that I still think about how I enjoyed watching or were impactful - Spotlight / Social Network / Gravity / Mad Max / The Descendants

Books: Dog Stars

Shows: All the ones we have talked about a lot. Too many to list.

Music: With Spotify /Apple Music I don't even know bands anymore. Just listen to everything. Bands I added recently to my playlists that I think are newish, this grows all the time: Beach House, Frightened Rabbit (RIP), New Pornographers, Kurt Vile, RaRa Riot.

This list is pretty damn long, but there's a ton of good wrestling out there in the world today. Ton of bad too, but let's celebrate the greatness.

Best Pro Wrestlers of the 2010s

  • Kazuchika Okada - order is debatable for the rest of them, but Okada is the ace of the industry
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi
  • Kenny Omega
  • AJ Styles
  • Daniel Bryan
  • WIll Ospreay
  • Tetsuya Naito
  • Chris Jericho
  • John Cena
  • CM Punk
  • Shinsuke Nakamura
  • Kota Ibushi
  • Zack Sabre, Jr.
  • Tomohiro Ishii
  • Ricochet
  • Kevin Owens
  • Finn Balor
  • The Shield - Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose
  • The Young Bucks - Nick & Matt Jackson
  • The Lucha Brothers - Pentagon & Rey Fenix

My 10 year old loves Descendants as well. First thing she went to watch again on Disney+.

I was expecting Lady Bird on here.

#1 Video Game is a tough call on replayables between Overwatch and Rocket League. Single playthrough I think goes to The Last of Us pretty handily. Timesinks is a toss-up between Skyrim and Breath of the Wild.

Top Board Games of the 2010s would have to include 7 Wonders, Codenames, Pandemic: Legacy, Gloomhaven, Terraforming Mars and 2019 standout Wingspan.

Bevers forevah.

My gut reaction, off the top of my head list of movies that should be at the top for the decade:

Social Network

The Master

Her

Ex Machina

Lady Bird

I think as far as movies that might define the decade, but I might not have them ranked very high would be:  Mad Max: Fury Road, Get Out, and maybe over time Once Upon a Time in Hollywood?

Novels

  • Lincoln in the Bardo - George Saunders
  • Sing, Unburied, Sing - Jesmyn Ward
  • Circe - Madeline Miller

Interesting.  I have a pile of 7-8 books at home I need to get two and these 5 are in the pile.

I couldn't get into Lincoln in the Bardo at all.  I have tried twice now and couldn't deal with the writing style.

Shows: All the ones we have talked about a lot. Too many to list.
I am a TV show grump, so take this list for what it's worth.  My faves, and I just included shows that began in the 10s:

The Leftovers

The Americans

Key and Peele

The Expanse

Atypical

Honorable Mentions:

Game of Thrones (for me mostly just S1-S4.  If it stayed at that level it would be a slam dunk #1)

Orphan Black (it got quite silly, but so worth it to watch Maslany work)

Hannibal ( I was shocked at how weird and violent this show got for a network show)

Bates Motel (more of a guilty pleasure, but Highmore and Farmiga put on an acting clinic)

Had to go to a list, there are so many. Of shows in the 2010's:

GoT - yes it ended badly but it was so amazing when it was good.

Downton Abby - Fancy pants soap opera. Perfectly cast.

Better Call Saul - It's no BB but it's still great.

Silicon Valley - So funny, a great 30 minutes. Some of the best characters on a comedy show.

Happy Endings - This show was great, so hard to do a good comedy on network TV. Very funny, good characters. Not sure why it didn't catch on.

Fargo - Love this show, Season 2 so good.

Stranger Things - Entertaining.

British Baking Show - Have no idea why I watch this show but I like it.

The Crown - Well made.

Veep - Always good.

Shows that had great seasons: Big Little Lies Season 1, Hannibal season 1

Need to watch: Killing Eve, Leftovers, Marvelous Mazel, Chernobyl, Mindhunter, American Vandal, Mr Robot,

Alexander Payne is one of my favorites----The Descendants, Sideways, Election, Nebraska, Citizen Ruth.  All great movies.

His most recent, Downsizing, was the first of his films that I did not like.
Yup. Downsizing was I think the worst movie I ever watched start to finish. I have no clue what happened there.

Favorite movies:

Boyhood

Call Me By Your Name

The Descendants

Inside Llewyn Davis

Lady Bird

Midnight In Paris

Parasite

Whiplash

Win Win

Zero Dark Thirty

You've got a good collection of books there.  Yeah, I can see that about Lincoln in the Bardo. I loved it, but maybe I was drinking too much bourbon while I was reading it.

I started Underground Railroad last night.  This is going to be a tough read...
